My older brother was close with Leonard Hamilton/Joe Dean at the time. Sampson definitely told the staff he was UK bound.
IMO, had he come to UK, we would have won at least 3 more NCAA titles (1980, 1981, and 1983). 1982 would have been a
toss-up with that outstanding UNC team.
1980: Sampson, Bowie, Macy, Hord, Hurt, Minniefield, Cowan, Shidler, Williams, Verderber, etc
1981: Sampson, Bowie, Turpin, Master, Beal, Bearup, Hord, Hurt, Minniefield, etc
1983: Sampson, Turpin, Kenny Walker, Master, Beal, Hord, Hurt, Minniefield, etc
Sampson would be listed as one of the 2-3 greatest players ever, instead of borderline top 20 with 1 Final 4 visit.
Still remember it like yesterday.
Don't know that it was the biggest "miss."
Sampson was committed to Kentucky when Sam Bowie committed. Most think Bowie's commitment led Sampson to consider his options and he ultimately opted to stay close to home.
His choice, not Kentucky's.

I'm going with Brandon Wright :)
I know it won't qualify as biggest ever! But I always thought we missed out on Chris Lofton!
Definitely not the biggest miss ever, but Corey Brewer was a big one.
Been a Cat fan since August of '92
It basically came down to Brewer or Randolph Morris if I remember correctly and we desperately needed a center.
Sucks because we didn't do much with Morris anyways and by dropping Brewer into Florida's lap basically handed them 2 titles.
Where they in the same class? I mean they brought Marvin Stone in with that class too. Seems like Stone and Alex had the same problem neither wanted to play hard at all times.
Marvin Stone was in the high school class of '99 with Keith Bogans and the late Johnathon Stewart. Brewer and Morris were '04.
Would you have traded Bowie for Sampson? That would have completely changed those teams. I would in hindsight only because I know UK didn't win a championship during those years. I'm not sure how I would go in 80. Where Bowie is likely to end up is a big factor too.
Sam wanted to play with Ralph. Bowie had already signed his letter while Ralph was still deciding.
If I remember correctly Bowie was the top rated recruit in the country until he and Sammpon faced off in a couple allstar games and people decided Sampson was better. One player the UK coaching staff thought they were going to get and missed, that could have made a big difference, was Weber.
If Sampson had gone to UK Turpin would have never signed with UK, His second choice was UofL
Jai Lucas. LOL.
LeBron James, he always said if he had to go to college UK was his pick. Lebron on our 2003 team!! D Wade never would have happend lol.

Don't think LeBron was coming to Kentucky. I think he would've ended up at Ohio State.
Not true. Lebron has only become a "UK fan" in recent years because of his relationship with Calipari. Said he would have gone to Ohio State.

If KY had gotten Jerry Lucas there would have been, at least, two more Banners hanging from the rafters.
