Cal said on his postgame show that they had to keep Wiltjer in as a shooter against the zone but then their offense became get the ball to whoever Wiltjer was guarding and score. So we were caught in between a rock and a hard place. Thats really really bad. Of course it might have been smart for Cal to zone himself in that situation. I don't know because I didn't get to watch the game. Just going on what I heard on the radio.
Exactly what I was thinking during the game. Need Wiltjer offensively against the zone but defensively, they were using pick and roll to isolate Wiltjer every trip down the court.
Tough decision to have to make.
So why not try some zone. Before the game Cal was actually talking about how they had been working on their zone. I'm not gonna question him because we won the game just wondering why that wasn't an option. You can hide Wiltjer a lot easier in a zone. Sounded like we were having trouble on the boards anyway. I'm not saying stay in it exclusively. Just wondering why it wasn't at least tried.
Wiltjer wasn't only a liability on the defensive end tonight, but the offensive end as well. He had a terrible night. The thing is if we made some threes harder we win by double-digits. At least three or four times WCS left to help leaving a shooter wide open. Then on offense we tried to get Kyle shots he didn't make.
For this team to take off Archie is going to have to hit the three and quit driving every time to the basket and pull up for more elbow jumpers. Plus, Poythress needs more work on the block. Add that to playing hard like they did on their run against UL and we might have something. AP has the MKG bug when he drives.
This certainly changes things.
Has anyone but me come to the conclusion that this team may never take off and start winning and playing like a team? Just asking...............
