Smith, who has spent the past six seasons with the Gophers, was fired on Monday afternoon, sources told CBSSports.com. His tenure ends with a 124-81 overall mark and a 46-62 record in Big Ten play.
Didn't really expect to hear that today. Going 5-11 in your last 16 games definitely can get you fired though.
Correction: losing 12 out of your last 18 games will get you fired.
I didn't see that coming especially after beating UCLA. I don't see Minnesota getting a better coach than Tubby. He fit them really well IMO. I don't see another high profile coach wanting to go there currently unless it is Howland! :)
I agree...Dont see them getting anyone better than Tubby. As we all know, it's all about PLAYERS. Maybe they go with someone that is younger and more attractive to recruits??? But hopefully Tubby's career doesn't end like this.
Thats a shocker, i feel bad for Tubby.
They are crazy. Is his contract up? I can't see paying him plus someone else that is clearly not going to be better. I don't get that move unless they already have someone lined up.
Bruce Pearl maybe? Minnesota probably has nothing to hide. If they are cheating and still that bad then a coach ain't gonna make a difference.
What killed me was ol' Dickie V came out with that crap when Tubby left, after going on and on several times that year on telecasts about how he wasn't bringing Kentucky level talent.
Here is hoping Tubby gets another gig, if he wants one.
This. Dude's a class act.
Keep Calm & Stoops On..
Very shocking. Tubby was always a class act and great representative of our school. He just couldn't get the players necessary to keep us at th top. Good luck to him. O'm sure he will find another gig if he desires one.
Minnesota is not a basketball school in any way. Tubby did a good job there. They will never be a big time basketball school. Not going to happen.
Apparently, according to Tubby's Barn, they've already hired Shaka Smart....
What we will not hear from the national press is the charge of racism unfairly leveled at the
"redneck" Kentucky fan base when Tubby voluntarily left for Minnesota.
Imagine if he had actually been fired as he was in this case!
As we all know, because we have been told, people in Northern liberal states are not capable of prejudice.
That journalistic malpractice still bugs me.
That said, Tubby is a very nice man and I wish him the best.

Is he a nice man? How do we really know that?
Not sure why one would question this....I will give you a personal experience and let you go from there. I have a friend who ran into Tubby in an airport in Chicago a while back. Tubby was running late for his plane and he took a picture with them and they had asked him to autograph something for them and he didnt have a pen on him and didnt really have the time. He told them to give him their address and he put it in his phone. A few weeks went by and they hadnt received anything. Then maybe another week went by and they received a Fed Ex of a basketball signed by Tubby Smith to them personally. This is who he is and always has been. He is the definition of class act. Was he the right fit here? Never. But noone should ever question whether he is nice or not.
You are the south end of a north facing burro.
How do I know? See your statement above
Hey, I've heard anecdotal stuff both ways. It's okay to question. I don't have to accept the generally accepted talking head opinion.
How do I know? In 1996 after the UK-UGA game in Rupp, my wife and I took her nephew's Antoine Walker jersey down to see if maybe we could get it autographed for him. While we were waiting at the tunnel entrance to the UK locker room, an usher came over and told the 15 or so (mostly kids with a couple or so parents) people that Pitino would be out to do his postgame show shortly, but would not stop on the way out. He said he "might" stop on the way back for a couple of minutes, but that there were ground rules. He said not to speak or make eye contact with Pitino. He said he would sign a few things if he stopped, but probably not all. If you got something, fine, if not, better luck next time. True to the usher's word, Pitino strode through with no acknowledgement of anyone. He stopped for maybe 3 minutes on the way back, signing maybe 10 things while never uttering a word or looking up, then promptly turned around and went back to the locker room without a "thanks for coming out", "have a safe trip home", or "**BLEEP** every last one of you hillbillies"
OTOH, Tubby Smith had brought three of his players out, and had them signing things and getting pictures made with a lot of eager youngsters, and Tubby did so as well. There wasn't anyone who left there empty handed.
On a side note, Walker looked out the dressing room door a couple of times with a disgusted look on his face, as if he had no intention of coming out until everyone was gone. Guess he didn't want to put any effort into something that would have meant a lot for those kids. Maybe Walker learned that from his coach.
Haha. Comparing Pitino to anyone is funny.
It's always interesting to me how people jump to the defense of TS. Like I said, I have heard many anecdotal negative things about him, as well, and positive things about Pitino.
Well, regardless, best of luck to the Tubbster. I suspect he'll latch on to an ESPN job or hang it up, but that's just me guessing.
Minnesota is a horrible job in practically every sport except for hockey. The only people who have ever "won" there were Bill Mussleman & Clem Haskins, and both were cheating sacks of dung.
I'm telling you what I saw in person. Pitino was a prick, Tubby did the right thing. You've only "heard" negative things about him, so I'll just make the assumption you're full of dung.
I have heard some positive things too. It's just a couple of incidents that I have heard about were pretty crass, so I'll reserve judgment. That's okay, right? Or is it not okay to have an opinion in regards to Tubby Smith? Suggest one negative thing and the crowd gets all antsy.
Cool story, I hope he gets a sweet gig soon.
