We all know its hard to win with 5 frosh starting..even if they are super talented 17 and 18 year olds. We also know Cal's teams need some toughness, leadership, and some guys to stick around a few years.
THis could all be solved by Cal helping Stoops recruit a couple 2 way football/Bball kids a year. The kid would be an elite talent in football..and a good enough basketball player to be better than your average walk-on. 2014 is a great year to start. Take Lorenzo Carter..the 6'6 245lb DE from Norcross,Ga that also happens to be the best Power Forward in Ga. Carter is in the mold of Jevon Kearse, Julius Peppers, and Jadevon Clowney as a DE. Reminds me of Terrence JOnes as a PF with better leaping ability. Carter would help out Cal as a solid backup that could bang, rebound, defend in the post, and more than likely stick around 3 years at least.
Lorenzo Carter is the nations top De, and #3 overall player. Even with Stoops success recruiting, UK's chances to land the kid are not great on football alone. Now..say Cal steps in..visits the kid..saying..you can play early at football and come play on the lands best basketball team as well. I think Uk would instantly jump to the top of Carters list. Makes sense huh? I would target 2 to 3 kids a year for this.. a point guard (who also plays wr/db?) a wing, and a banger PF/C. Allows Cal to keep doing what he does and still have depth and veterans without ever costing the Basketball team a scholly, all while helping our rebuilding football program land Elite kids that probably wouldnt come to Lex without the lure of Calk and Uk Hoops.
Most kids don't want to play both sports in college. They want to concentrate on one and make a push to go pro.
OUtside of Charlie ward and Julius Peppers, who else has done this?
Tony Gonzalez, Bruce Ellington... Most may not choose to do this but if it gets a few superbly talented football players to choose UK then I'm all for it. By the time they are juniors they will probably decide to focus on one sport because of the time demands but when they are high school seniors they may still envision the possibility of playing both sports.
So four in the last 20 years or so.
That was not meant to be an exhaustive list and I am not suggesting that this is a common thing. I am just suggesting that it would not hurt to consider such a thing as a tool in rare instances where you might be able to get a football player to consider Kentucky when he would not have done so otherwise.
THere have been a lot more than 4..and more than a few didnt reach the pros in either sport. I can remember South carolina having a guard that played wr/db, Ga with a kid that played both, actually..2 kids at Ga lately..one was the TE..one was a db and guard.
Again..Im just putting this out there as a means to help both sports. I also think UK basketball being what it is..the lure of clean-up minutes here could be more impressive to kids than say..Ga, Vandy,Bama, ect. You are correct Hoptown..in that its not a popular path..I agree with you 100%. Just makes sense to me to try it though.
And Julius Peppers had the benefit of the UNC 'African American Studies' program that was none existent and led to the UNC scandal... just sayin'
The Arkansas QB/WR played both a few years ago. He is still a WR in the NFL today. Name escapes me(Jones?).
However, more often than not most of the dual sport FB/BB athletes don't make it as pros. It's more the exception but not totally unheard of.

Jones has been out of
The nfl for 3 years after multiple drug arrests. He played a year or two of b-ball.
Love it. Don't know bout a pg or wing but absolutely love the idea of a physical muscled up DE under basket throwing dudes around. Point guard is too important on Cals team for them to not elite. Think that's kinda what we all saw this year. Up vote for you cuz we sure could've used that toughness this year.
Antonio Gates...and the list grows
Charlie Ward, Greg Paulas, Donovan McNabb, Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Julius Peppers AND teammate Ronald Curry, Andre Ware, Bruce Ellington, Jones from Arky, and plenty more have done it.
Now sure where this strategy would be Cal getting help?
Cal get's mostly who he wants, right now... It seems one sided helping.
It doesn't hurt Cal and provides him with a higher level of practice player than he currently has on the roster. So what if the benefit is primarily, or totally, for the football team. No reason he shouldn't be willing to help Stoops out in a unique case like this.
That said, I'm not totally sure that Stoops would even go along with such an idea. These guys seldom want to share their players with another sport. And with UK basketball likely going deep into the tournament most years that would mean that Stoops wouldn't be able to work with one of his better players during the spring.
BBD12: Totally agree with you Great idea that deserves to have any real or perceived problems worked around.
I don't get it.
So most of them didn't even succeed in the pro. Are they even good enough to provide true practice condition.
Also, if you look at Bruce Ellington, he was completely destroyed by KY...he was 5'9". Hardly a practice partner when he would be 8 inches shorter than the harrison twins.
It's rare situation when player becomes factor for BOTH sports. It might help one but i doubt it will help the other. Bruce Ellington playing on UK team probably won't help much of basketball side.
Also, increase the likelihood of injury makes the situation less desirable. They both need to focus on each respective sports, and i would go farther and say better to recruit ones that doesn't do multi sports.
You are right, Wildmoon, you don't get it. This is not about getting Cal another basketball player. It is about Cal using the basketball program to help Coach Stoops get a highly-ranked football player.
Gates didn't play college FB.
Greg Paulus didn't play both at the same time. He played four years of Cbb them transferred to syracuse to play one year of football. Gates didn't play both in college.
I also do not believe Andre ware played both. I think you are confusing him with Charlie wars.
