I remember the hire and was admittedly confused, but back then our only source of information was the newspaper. Just shows what the information age has done.
Pretty sure that he would not be a "candidate" now. . . . actually wondering now why he was one in the first place although it was fun to watch for a little while.
I can ONLY imagine
Someone should figure out how CM even thought to look into that name. Seriously.
Why I thought of that I had no idea. . but it does show how much times have changed and hopefully more importantly that there is some degree of accountability that may have not existed before.
We have never done a coaching search since social media really took off.
Tony Franklin put them on to him, he was coach at Mercer Co. at the time
Actually it was Carl Parker who put CM Newton onto Hal Mumme.
Carl Parker played football at Vanderbilt and a couple years in the NFL. He knew CM from his Vandy days. He was working as the color man on radio for Valdosta State football. He contacted CM and suggested he talk to this exciting, up and coming coach.
Tony Franklin did meet with CM and greatly promoted Hal Mumme as well.
At the time, it seemed like a risky yet exciting hire (anything was more exciting than Bill Curry). He ran an exciting offense and put up major points everywhere he had been. Plus CM wanted to keep Couch at UK and this offense was the way to do it. Who knew that Mike Major and Claude Bassett would be such awful and idiotic coaches. Also, remember that Sonny Dykes, Guy Morriss, and Tony Franklin were assistants under Mumme, so he had some good assistants just not the lead ones.
The hire was a joke and proved how inept and how little CM Newton cared about football.
I do not disagree with you totally, but it is easy to look back now and come to that conclusion.
At the time, ithe hire injected excitement into Kentucky football.
Retrospectively, Hal was lacking on the honesty and integrity front. Those along with his lack of interest in defense and massive ego became his undoing.
At the time of the hire it was viewed as a joke. The next two years there was excitement but we all know we were never going to to be better than couch's junior year with mumme.
