I think we all get it, joker was kind of on the hot seat coming into the season. People all said anywhere from 3-5 wins were enough to let him coach his young team a couple more years... But, 3 games in there is nothing on the board outside of replacement coach topics... Anybody want to talk about football and the conference schedule starting?
Listen, most people expected 4-5 wins but they also expected a team that would compete every single time they showed up on the field, that is not happening.
Outside of opening the offense up to an extent, this team is not prepared mentally of physically when we come out of the gates. We will be buried when conference play starts next weekend.
Before any single person on this board chimes in and talks about how young we are, we are supposedly a SEC team and any one we face, MAC or Sunbelt should be nothing more than a blip. We are young as hell because in year number three, Joker and his buds have seriously missed on the guys we have recruited. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that we have lost so many of our top rated recruits in the last couple of classes.
Total bull-crap. I have an education but it would take me twelve years to make what Joker Phillips makes in a single season. Sad as hell.
I want much more and we all deserve more, I don't care if you bitch all day or have sunshine pumped up your butt. Totally ridiculous.

Guess not lol...
But, to your point... We are not even close to being an SEC team, and have never been. Just a team who happens to be in the SEC. So to hell with all this SEC team vs big east, or whatever... When is our last winning season in SEC play...?
Gotta go back to Claiborne, the man knew how to coach some home-grown talent and get the best out of them. The man is a legend, at least in my mind.
Exactly! That's why I'm sick of hearing people talk about how down we are, blah blah blah. Or how SEC is so good that it's inexcusable to lose even by 1 to small conferences. It's old, and annoying. Uk has never been a real SEC team, so get over it. Our best year I can remember is 4-4!!!!!! Fire the coach if you want, who cares. You will get the same result by letting joker finish two more years as you will with a home run hire starting over. I would rather talk about trying to go 1-0 in the conference for the first time in eons:)
Agreed. But how many years since Curci have we said the same thing?
What is the REAL issue?
We have had real good offenses.. but from a defensive stand point we have been horrible 9 out of 10 years.
I guess I have to disagree with that. Brooks coached a couple of pretty decent teams that were a couple of TD's shy of a winning SEC record, he handed that over to Joker who could win two SEC games at best (IMO).
I guess it's kind of like Curry taking over for Claiborne, one step forward and five steps back. It will get worse every single week at this point.
To be perfectly honest with you, we are a basketball school that doesn't give a rats-ass about football. It's painful for me to say but it's always been that way.
I think that's about to change though, it has to at this point; way too much profit being lost this year and definitely next if something BIG doesn't happen.
IDK man...I've been hearing for years that we were not mentally ready, ready to play at the opening kick, etc. I was a guy that said give Brooks 4 years because of the PATHETIC shape we were in at the time. But can't count the times even under Brooks that we came out FLAT. That IMHO is coaching.
I believe that is a cop out.
Kansas, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Florida, even LSU, UCLA & Florida State have won in BOTH.
For GODS sake, Wake and Baylor went to a BCS game and is pretty good in hoops....
We HAVE to be in the same conversation with those guys...
Honestly what's left to talk about? Wanna discuss how many yards and points we will give up at Florida? Whether we lose by 20 or 30? How far can Foster punt?
I totally understand and agree with that; remember back in '09 when we pushed AU around the field and then let Jakes from MSt put up 250 on the ground at Commonwealth.
You are correct, we just never seem mentally prepared and it seems like it happens more than often at home. Hell, we lost to MSt in '07 with one of our best teams since '77.
I don't get it; it's probably the fans fault. Damn, I just want to see a team that kills someone from the start.
Truth is.... We will be worse off firing our coach than if we give it time, bottom line!!!!! All this bull about going out and hiring a home run makes me want to punch someone in the face until I break every bone in both my hands... That is the EXACT same thing as Auburn saying that in basketball. Even if auburn paid top dollar, no good coach is going there. Same here, sorry. So stop talking about how much we need to spend, or even who we should hire in my opinion, only a cheapo or up and comer coach would ever come to uk. Plus, currently there isn't even an opening here. Go cats, beat gators
Its a lot harder to be good in both apparently for basketball first schools. I'll also add that in my lifetime Kansas has done nothing in football. There success has been about like ours. UCLA hasn't been able to sustain anything.
Yeah, maybe it's a cop-out but I'm approaching 50 and it's always been the same. Wake sucks in football and had a couple of good hoop teams, Baylor had one good football team but has put together a b-ball team that is competitive (and that's much easier in bball than football).
Of all the teams you mentioned (outside of WF), those schools all place emphasis on the two money-winning sports that bring revenue into the school.
We're focused on winning the Capital Cup which will make Barnhart look like a genius when all is said and done.
And I've had a few beers on a Monday night.
Okay, if you think that our best option is keeping this staff then I really don't know what to say; I'm not sure what you see that 97% of the rest of the BBN can't see at this point.
We do not have a leader at the helm. I'm not trying to argue, just stating what I see right now. Joe Phillips is not a leader and it is obvious to me.
He should be fired tonight. It won't happen, but we get worse every single time he coaches or opens his mouth.
The last real SEC defense that could stop the run was Curci coached.
The meanest dog in Taiwan.
the argument about the co-existence of football and basketball success...look no further than our opponent this weekend. I believe Florida made a commitment to both and they have had a pretty decent modicum of success.
Yep but its also been said that it seems to be much easier for football first schools to have success in basketball than it is for basketball first schools to have success in football. Regardless we still need to make a commitment to football. Hell Cal can run the bball program by himself. We need to take this time to capitalize on that. We aren't going anywhere in bball and we're a laughing stock in football. Something can be done about it. I used to be of the mindset that fans should show up to games regardless but maybe if we hit the decision makers where it hurts we can force change.
I'd settle for sucking our way into a BCS game every once in awhile. At this stage, UK needs a coach who will seven or so games consistently and take advantage of the occasional hiccup in circumstance and good fortune to win 9-10 (Should've happened in 2007, honestly). It's probably not realistic to be a big time program without a culture change-- and being good to very good will come first. Brooks came close to this, but of course, things are moving backward. And it's still be 35 years since we mustered a winning season in the SEC.
Not sure anyone expected a loss to WKU though. It's not too late to save his job and a lot will depend on how competitive UK is the rest of the season, but the WKU loss but Joker behind the 8-ball a little bit.
Actually Claiborne had a couple with his wide tackle 6.
Claiborne coached at UK from 1982 through 1989. In those 8 years, UK's defense allowed
1982 26.1 ppg
1983 19.7 ppg
1984 18.4 ppg
1985 19.2 ppg
1986 18.8 ppg
1987 17.2 ppg
1988 18.9 ppg
1989 20.0 ppg
Prior to Claiborne, Curci's last 2 teams were 20.1 and 25.4 ppg, but Curci's other teams also posted very impressive defensive results
1979 13.0 ppg
1978 17.2 ppg
1977 10.1 ppg
1976 12.5 ppg
1975 16.6 ppg
1974 17.6 ppg
1973 17.8 ppg
Since Claiborne left, UK has had one season in 1 season in 22 in which the defense held opponents to under 20.0 ppg, 1993 with Curry at 17.7 ppg. During that same 22 years, only 4 years including 1993, did the defense hold opponents to less than 25 ppg, and two of those years were 2008 and 2009 (Steve Brown years), and 7 seasons, UK defense allowed over 30 ppg for the season.
This is why I say that UK has not seen defensive teams of any real merit since Claiborne hung up his cleats.
I'd take any of those results outside of the 1982 results. We could win tons of games with a defense that could hold opponents to less than 20 per game.
The elite SEC teams every year accomplish two things at the same time. The score over 30 ppg and they hold opponents to under 20 ppg. That is the mark of an SEC contender in any year. Check the records, and you will see that has been the case, and it will be the case again this year.
The elite SEC teams are also highly ranked, and the elite of the elite in the SEC will compete for the national championship. On the defensive side, the recent SEC Champions have held defenses to 10 ppg or less. Those two Curci led defenses in 1976 and 1977 were truly worthy of that level of recognition, and for those of us who were fortunate enough to have experienced those two season, we understand in clear terms how excellent those teams were.
So, the lesson that these data teach is to compete in the SEC a team must have talent on both sides of the ball capable to averaging over 30 ppg on offense AND holding opponents to less than 20 ppg on defense. Those are the benchmarks, and these benchmarks have been consistently true for many years. Having one or the other is sufficient most years to place a team in the middle of the SEC pack, and absent either of them, a team teams to hang around in the bottom of the SEC barrel
