He is responsible for the recruiting wows, but there is for sure tons of young, unconditioned, frailed football players on this team barely shaving.
My fear is these kids will ever see a weight room due to injury and recovery in the offseason. Josh Clemmons comes to mind.
I've been a Joker supporter but can not do it anymore. Saturday showed me that Towles should have been #2 from the get go. He's the same type of QB as Smith while Jalen is not. (This is not a knock on Jalen) Why would you want to try to run two different types of offenses if you don't have to. I honestly believe if Towles would have been taking #2 snaps all along his chance of injury would have been greatly decreased. Sorry for the long answer but no Joker shouldn't get another year IMO.
I decline because of MY age.
Time to move on.
No!!! There's no fire on that sidelines at all.. Watch Muschamp against LSU look at the fire in his eyes Joker don't have it never has. Kids have fire Fresh or Senior u just have to reach and get it.
How is that a fair question? Joker has been HC 3 years, and has used youth as an excuse every year? If the youth excuse works now, we might as well hire him for a lifetime and let him use it every year.
You've got that right. No fire whatsoever. And when something doesn't go right he looks like he is just whining about it.
And no he does not deserve another year because of youth. I am so tired of hearing that crap! People tend to forget that Joker is responsible for every player that is here, including the junior and senior classes. He recruited those kids. Did you all forget that Joker was THE recruiting coordinator for Brooks? Joker was the one responsible for bringing in the juniors and seniors that aren't very good for an SEC team. Joker was named coach-in-waiting so that there would be no downtime in recruiting. Joker was named coach-in-waiting so that the recruits that were coming in would know who the coach would be when Brooks retired. He was named this so that the program would have stability and would not have to suffer through the normal changes that happen to a school when a brand new coach is hired. That is why he does not deserve another year, if this year is not turned around I might add. When Brooks retired everything was supposed to go on exactly as it was to keep a smooth transition. Two years later we had an entire new coaching staff on hand. How's that worked out? And lets not forget that those last couple of classes for Brooks were pretty good classes according to the people who know. So maybe, just maybe it might not be that the talent of the junior and senior class is that bad. It might just be that they do not have very good coaching around them to lead them.
If all it was, was youth....then maybe I'd give him another yr. But it's beyond that.
Fair Question? I don't attend anything UK I'm all Ohio St Buckeye! However my wife is UK alum which I have successfully switched her to God's team ! The Buckeyes ! Yes she didn't even watch the Cats play BBall anymore says The Schott is a better more comfortable Arena ! However with her family being all UK from Greenup they no longer care about UK football and Thanksgiving down there is not near as fun! So my question is do the UK paying ticket holders deserve another year of this debacle!!
Just one factual clarification on your post: Joker Phillips has not been Kentucky's recruiting coordinator since 2004. Highly involved? Yes. Coordinator of their recruiting efforts? Not in 8 seasons.
Joker's had a terrible string of luck with injuries. I think the team is in very good shape for the future with it's young talent. I respect Joker and appreciate his service to UK.
However, there are three very bad losses on Joker's resume: WKU this year, Pounding by Vandy last year, and UofL last year. If Joker can't avoid these types of losses in which he did not suffer from a significant talent disparity, then he can't be UK's coach.
No, that's mainly due to player development. He went to full on having recruiters and not having a balance between teachers and recruiters. We should be better sounded at given positions but haven't really
I don't always post but when I do, I try to make things interesting
No. In all probability the new coach will get a Sophmore and Junior laden team. This may or may not help him since alll three of those classes were rated at the bottom of the SEC. Yes, they appear better than our upperclassmem, but don't know if it is enough to win 8+ games with our schedules. Maybe with experience they will be.
I tried to read your post but there weren't enough exclamation points. 4/10, please try again.
this. his lack of game and roster management skills doom him. fire the whole staff.
My mistake. I should have looked into that better. All I ever heard out of Brooks and other people was how good of a recruiter he was so I assumed if he was that good of a recruiter that he would be the guy recruiting the players. I should have researched that before running off at the mouth.
That said, if he was "deeply involved" in the players we recruited as stated on UK's website, my guess is he still had an influence on the players we went after. Especially being named Coach-in-waiting.
He should probably be let go.
As a coordinator you don't recruit much at all. Your position coaches are responsible for 9/10 recruits. The head coach and coordinators do very little "on the road" recruiting.
And how's that turned out for ya?? Tattoo and Scars and a lying fired coach. And for basketball when was the last time the Suckeyes cut dwn any nets period...
A single coach can't recruit "every" player. The fact of the matter is that Joker was responsible with most of our high profile recruits the last few eyars. The problem is that he didn't have as much time to recruit because he was the coordinator. Couple that with the fact that over half of our staff under brooks spent little to no time on the recruiting trail and you have the mess we see in our top two classes right now.
All that to say, we have the talent on the roster to beat western.
Joker dug his own grave by falling short against Ole miss, Miss. State and Tennessee his first year.
If we had won 2/3 of those games we likely play in a new years day bowl game. If we had done that we are all talking about how much great young talent we have right now and how we are lookign good for next year.
Instead, we flopped in those 3 games and Joker's first year was a massive disapointment.
I had hoped joker could stick around because this IS his dream job. But the bottom line is that it just isn't working out. When he gets to 8 losses Barnhart should do the deed.
This is not a true statement. Coach Chuck Smith is recruiting cordinator and he is on the road a lot.
Injuries and attrition are part of D1 football. All schools face it. Are we young? Absolutely! Do these guys show flashes of ability, yes they do. The problem I have is back to the front office. Total lack of leadership!!! Joker has for years been who these players run to when yelled at by others. He from my viewpoint needs to make these upperclassmen toe the line or move on period. They have been slapped on the hand and made to sit in time out but not been really held accountable because he wants to be there friend. How about poor Morgan Newton. He could have been one of the best tight ends in recent years, but, was never moved to that position until recently(to a slot receiver). But those in charge allowed him to stay in a position he was ill equipped to play at this level.
But leadership does not end in the football office. To allow the AD and the UKAA to have a pass is not justified. It is time to make wholesale changes and move forward. Once again we find ourselves starting over due to the ineptness of leadership not only from the aforementioned but our Board of Trustees as well. If basketball is to be the status quo then dome over Commonwealth and create a 70,000 seat basketball facility, drop football and move on!
I mean that as the offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator. I should have been clear in my statement. Sorry.
He can't blame it on the youth. He's the one mostly responsible for them being so young. And besides, why aren't our upperclassmen(the ones we do have) good enough to beat out freshmen and sophomores?
No!!, there are problems with the structure of this team. Why is their so much youth? I'll tell you why. Players that would be juniors and seniors this year have left this program because of jokers favoritism and felt they wasn't getting a fare opportunity. People say attrition is with all d1 programs which is true but why is UK young every year? Next year it will be the same thing ," were young ". That's a excuse for losers. Real football programs don't get young they just keep reloading not rebuilding.
I agree. The coach in waiting hasn't worked out. Recruiting is also part of job. We can't use this excuse every year. Our team is playing with the same type of enthusiasm as our coach coaches. I'm a season ticket holder as alot of you are and am very disappointed.I was hoping Joker would succeed. It is time to move on.
