This is some great reporting work. Tons of details in this story, including Shabazz being 20, not 19, and his dad was scared of the competition at Kentucky.
Ron Holmes has spent two decades guiding his son Shabazz Muhammad toward a pro basketball career. The payoff is near, with the UCLA star projected as a top draft pick.
The dude is clearly a liar. I'm glad they stayed away.
Wow. It may have been a blessing he didn't come to UK. The reporter reveals some questionable actions/activity by his father.
- Living in nice, rented houses, and driving nice cars throughout the process
- Supporting his family with income from rental properties, none of which are in his name
- Doing an about face when pressed about the true age of his child
- Attempting to downplay the newsworthiness of his son's true age and his criminal record - and then appearing to offer a deal(?) to the reporter (via text) to work together on the messaging and marketing of his son
And on, and on, and on. The kid was manufactured and marketed like a...I don't know what. Sadly, as bad as this makes the father look, it makes the NCAA look just as bad, if not worse, for creating and ignoring the shady parts of major college sports that has led to this sort of activity.

Shabazz needs to call Bernie Kosar.
I think what struck me most was the desperation with which the father wants an athletic meal ticket. I mean, he basically treated his kid like a commodity before he was even born. I remember playing baseball with some guys whose fathers were like that, but not to that degree. Still, I feel sorry for the kid.
"Another important source of travel funds was a 34-year-old financial planner named Ben Lincoln.
The son of a high school coach and a former student manager of the University of South Florida basketball team, Lincoln runs his own wealth management firm in Charlotte, N.C. A basketball fanatic, he travels the country watching games. His client list includes former college coach Brad Greenberg.
Through his brother, an assistant coach at Muhammad's high school, Lincoln met Holmes. He now calls him a close friend. Starting in March 2010, Lincoln paid for at least three visits to the University of North Carolina and Duke, covering airfare and hotel bills for Holmes and his son.
Lincoln was in L.A. this month to watch UCLA play. In an interview, Lincoln said he couldn't remember exactly how much he spent, but that he paid for the trips because the family was tight on funds, something Holmes denies.
'Ben offered to pay, so I let him,' Holmes said."
I'm going to make a prediction- Shabazz Muhammad will eventually land UCLA on probation.
lol, so he is 20 years old. older than MKG. Buwahahahaha
his status is going to drop.
also, marketing in KY is far greater than UCLA even as a bench player at UK. lol
Average player in the NBA.... im glad he went to UCLA.
I agree entirely. This is one recruit I am glad we didn't land.
His on the court actions this year have shown he has no class. After reading this, I can see why! His father and Ben Howland deserve one another. Thank the Lord he stayed on the West coast!!

I feel sorry for Shabazz can u imagine living your whole life with the pressure his father placed on him. I mean who paid for all those camps I bet it wasn't his family. This screams probation and you can bet after Bazz is gone Holmes doesn't do squat to help UCLA when the house comes down. Lets be honest Howland is gone he can't win without talent and he struggles for whatever reason getting talented kids. I think Anderson transfers and maybe a few others.
Another thing Cal would have made Bazz the focal point of our team and we could have made at least a run to the sweet sixteen or further. Thus helping Bazz get drafted higher possible number one. But I'm glad he went to UCLA this season will help the players returning and the frosh coming in to do something special next year.
Two words Scum - Bag
Shabazz was one of the missing pieces for us this year but does anyone doubt Jerry Tipton wouldve written a similar piece in December instead of come tourney time?
None of this is Bazz's fault so some of you should lay off the freaking kid. This is a parent problem not a kid problem.
Bazz will still be drafted in the top 5 of this years draft and will still be a starting two guard at some point in his career in the NBA. PERIOD!
With that said thank god he didn't commit to UK. We don't need this stuff and you can bet this stuff would have been unearthed long ago had he been at UK. And I'd imagine many more details would have been brought to light.
Great player, would have been a vital piece here. I think he made a mistake not coming here honestly as far as talent and style goes.... But, this reeks of what is the inevitable meltdown of ucla and howland via pressure and violations....
By the way this is really no different than the Serena and Venus Williams story. They were basically born and bread to be professional tennis players. Their father did every thing he could to make it happen. The only difference is they weren't required to play a year of college Tennis in order to go pro.
This isn't a questions of who is at fault. This is more about a father and subsquently a son trying to explote a system they seem as unfair. To me, they both are trash and I can't wait to see them on a documentary about rags to riches and back to rags. IMO, they what's wrong with AAU circuit and watering down of college basketball. JMO!

But that is exactly where you are wrong. Shabazz has done nothing but play basketball. You can't blame any of this on him. Get a grip. You are just out for blood.
Matt, do you think there's any chance that Cal actually pulled the plug on Shabazz coming to KY due to all the baggage? Or, is this type of prima donna, "stage mom" type behavior more prevalent (even here) than I'm thinking.
"You can calm down a fool before you can resurrect a corpse", Coach John Thompson on why he'd draft DeMarcus Cousins despite question marks
Shabazz pretty much a nonfactor tonight, Pitiful first half!
Totally agree. If he had come to Kentucky you can bet he never woulda played like kanter. The ncaa has to big a hard- on for UK.
The system is unfair! Right now the NCAA (by the NBA rule) makes money off of players that could and sometimes should (Nerlens) go straight to the NBA out of high school. It is wrong that you wish ill on Shabazz. The AAU system is flawed but it is not Shabazz's fault. Just My Opinion I hope Shabazz has a long a successful NBA career and I hope he can out preform the shadow his father has cast over him.
