1. Lamb misses WIDE OPEN 3 from corner that would have put the Cats up 9 with 8:58 to go. Dores get wide open 3 by Tinsley at the other end. Six-point swing in the blink of an eye.
2. Davis forces a 3 (albeit open) early in the shot clock that could have made it 62-55 again on next possession. 6:46
3. Lamb misses wide open 3 that could have made it 65-57 at 4:45.
4. Miller misses open 3 from left wing that could have made it 65-59 at 3:37.
5. Teague misses 3-footer off dribble-drive pull-up. Point-blank shot he will make about 9 out of 10 times. Could have put UK up 64-60 with 2:37 to go. Driver's seat.
Next thing you know, Vandy gets a tip-in by Ezeli and a three-point play by a guy who doesn't play much, Kedren Johnson, and it's a 65-62 Dore advantage.
So many chances...

Spot on JD. Vandy was playing out of their mind. We weren't nearly as motivated yet we still had every chance. Just shows how
Good this team is.
So many missed theys in there....

Lamb misses those kinds of shots pretty often, drives me NUTS. He missed 2 pretty WIDE open 3's yesterday against Florida as well that would have put us up 12....a couple minutes later it was a 2 point game.
Gave up lots of second chance points all game. It happens and Vandy is a team with NBA talent at three positions. You cannot play that poorly and expect a different outcome.
Good recap on what could have won it. The game though was actually lost at the free throw line imo. UK made more baskets than Vandy, even matched them 3 pointer for 3 pointer but lost the free throw battle by 9.
PS. UK also got outrebounded today and just as the talking heads said during the game Vandy made more free throws that UK took.

(Not end of the stretch, but just as big)
how about early in the game,
Penetration by gilchrist, CLEAR blocking foul.
Becomes charge, and 3 point swing.
That would have put UK up 9 and with a FT, i believe it would have been a 10.

While watching the game, I thought the Lamb miss at the 8 minute mark was going to be huge. Unfortunately I was right. Lamb missed some big shots last week at Florida, and again yesterday, but no one noticed cause we won.
I told my wife that was a huge turning point after they let Tinsley get a freebie on the other end. That game was real close to getting away from Vandy if that shot goes down. Next thing you know, it's a 3-point game.
UK didn't make shots down the stretch against Florida and they got away with it. They didn't get away with it against Vandy.
Could have easily put them away time and time again.
I stand by the fact I think they were gassed. When you're legs are gone, your shot is gone, you can't sit down on defense and you can't rebound, all things that cost the Cats down the stretch.
Davis looked completely spent. And no wonder after pushing Ezeli's 280 pounds around all day. Plus, UK got outrebounded 37-29 by a team that's not a very good rebounding team.
I looked back at the tip-in that Ezeli got and he got the tip in because of a push in Davis back
Yeah, Lamb misses half of those 3 point shots! Darn him!
The problem as I see it is fatigue - either mental or physical.
D was not quite as sharp.
And on O, yes, we had several open 3s that could have been daggers, but shooting 28 3s in any game is too many.
When you are tired, it is easy to settle.
That said, the Lamb miss followed by the Tinsley 3 was the turning point IMO.
Another huge factor - look how emotionally invested in this game Vandy was. We joke about UK being other team's Super Bowl, but quite often, it is the truth. Esp w the SEC tourney title on the line.
Vandy gave everything they had, we missed several shots that could have made the difference, and the ball bounced their way.
So, they get their celebration now, we'll go for the real celebration in NOLA in a few weeks...
AND, I'm with JDrum - I'm not going to allow VU to ruin my bracket again!
Yeah, that's true.
Especially the way they play defense and offense, I would expect them to be exhausted.
I remember the way they defended against Vandy the last 5-8 minutes at Vandy. There was no space between the shooters and UK player. It was crazy good.
I think they are pretty worn out by the time third game came. Both Miller and Lamb shot less than 30% this weekend (3 point shooting). Actually Lamb shot 27% from the three this weekend, and Miller shot 17%. Two of our double digit scorer was highly inefficient this weekend.
I just wonder where "fresh legs" Wiltjer was? Why was he not in the game at all toward the end when it was obvious everybody else was gassed???
Don't care what Cal keeps saying, he needs to buy Davis more than 30 seconds or so when he takes him out. Let Eloy play 2 minutes before or after a media timeout. That's not going to kill you.
Fortunately, they don't have to play three games in three days again.
i bet Eloy would have been more productive this year if Cal would have given him time. he gave Kyle time and his offense has responded.
1) If you think about it, our game with Florida was much more draining chasing pick and rolls and getting back in transition. Vandy had to face a stationary zone from Ole Miss and didn't have to worrry as much about getting back in transition.
2) Donovan cries foul about the amount of calls Florida didn't get which I really believe helped Vandy get more calls.
3) We were gassed and outmanned down a MKG at the end. Everything lined up for them.
Side note: It just annoys the heck out of me about people compaining about Lamb not hittting the shots down and has been missing them. He has hit several clutch threes in several games. He is almost a 50% 3pt shooter and you complain about the half he doesn't hit? Come on!
IMO UKs short bench is a real worry going into the NCAA tournament. They basically have 6 players that are championship type players. Foul trouble, an injury or just plain fatigue from having to play the starters too many minutes could derail UKs drive to a NC.
Calipari needs to build better benches. UK needs two or three more players on the bench that can give the starters a blow without losing hard earned leads and step in in case of injury or foul trouble.
The fact that Miller is versitile and can play 3 or 4 positions helps but he need some help.
i had reservations about calipari's recruiting style because of this issue. i might have posted this when he was hired but i'm not sure. anyway, i question whether a championship can ever be attained when you get 5 or 6 new players every year with little depth.
I think, the last part is the reason why he hates SEC tourney.
Just because of three straight games, it's almost a different game he is coaching. Time management of each players become more important.
When you have 2 games in 3 days, with rest in the middle you can play Davis 40 minutes, no problem.
While short rotation, i think, works great for NCAA, but not so much for conference tourney. (Coach K also does this, and last year's UConn also had short bench)
While I dont think it is a necessity it would be nice if we had a deeper bench. If we had another big body off the bench that could defend/rebound it would have been a HUGE help for us. I wouldn't mind using a scholly on a big body from the juco ranks to be honest, someone similar to what Cal had in Joey Dorsey at Memphis(even though he wasnt a juco).
Did we miss them due to fatigue? I think so probably.
One play in the final minutes of the game that I thought was big -- and I haven't gone back to review it -- was the foul called when Jenkins was shooting the 3 (and missed it). It appeared as if he kicked his leg out to draw the foul but I haven't gone back to review. 3 point swing there.
Its very very likely. Jenkins is notorious for kicking his leg out and drawing contact on those quick pull up jumpers.
