Will Yeguete is out the remainder of the regular season because of knee surgery. Not a huge stat guy but probably their toughest player, best defender and certainly the 'dirty work' guy. He had a foot injury that caused him to miss the end of last season when the Gators went 4-5 the final nine regular season games without him. Thy now have almost no depth in the frontcourt. The SEC race may have just become a lot more interesting.
I hate that for any player.
Hate to hear it for the kids sake and it will make a difference in their depth.
i have an odd feeling that we will sweep the gators this year...i do think we will slip once or even twice but i got a weird confidence that we sweep florida this year
I don't. Their guard play is still 1000x better than ours. And perhaps their post play too.
Although they certainly don't have a difference maker like Noel.
Still, I'd prefer Florida at full strength. If Murphy or Young get in foul trouble they could go 4 guards. And I don't believe we could guard them.
Just read this on the FL Gators official website....
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- For the second year in a row, the Florida Gators will deal with the loss of forward Will Yeguete.
This year, however, the versatile defensive specialist is expected to be back for the postseason.
If they go 4 guards we could go zone on D and Wiltjer could flat eat them alive in the post.
if they go 4 guards i wouldnt be so scared of them...harrow goodwin mays and poythress with noel isnt bad lineup against there 4 guard lineup
Thats probably a better idea because Poy could eat up anyone of their guards in the post as well as long as his head is in the game.
Florida may be a better offensive team without him but this will be a huge blow defensively and not just because of his individual talents there. Their team defense, which has been very good, is likely to fall of sharply.
For some reason, even before the injury, I've had a hard time putting all my trust into this Florida team.
Same. Them figuring out way to lose that Arizona game says something to me. Just not a championship team-like performance at the end of that one. Also failed the KSU challenge. UF should be the best team in the nation, but just don't trust them.
I agree. That loss to Zona was pitiful. They had that game locked up and completely fell apart.
A healthy Willie can be hell on a guard too.
Florida is legit. It has shooters at multiple positions, is a terrific passing team, defends well, has a strong rebounder in Young, has finally figured out how to rein in Boynton, and no longer has Erving Walker acting a fool. The Gators will be a really tough out when/if Yeguete comes back, but they're going to have to overcome their own inner demons about collapsing in the second half of Elite Eight games each of the past two years.
This more so what I was referring to. The pieces are definitely there to potentially be the best team in the country. But can they do it when it counts? That's my only question.
