Looking back, I remember when everyone said there was no way we would hire Coach Cal, including (no offense) many of the mods on this board. It was only late in the game that folks thought it might happen.
Do you think that the outside forces might step in now as they did then? I may be completely wrong about how things transpired. . I have no inside information, but if I remember . . .when the coaching search came up there was a next to zero chance that Cal would be hired, many thought BCG would retained and if not it would be anyone but Cal.
Can we see something similar happen now?
I honestly don't think we'll hire Cal to coach the football team...I mean it could happen as Cal is an innovator, but we would have to pay him over $10M a year and that's a little steep even for Cal.
I'm not sure exactly what you are asking in your question there....
Yes it would be steep:-)
My question was that when we thought we would need a new Basketball Coach, everyone thought that there was no way we would hire Coach Cal. It was only late in the game that it was considered a possibility, and at a complete shock to most of the media. This board, and the admins involved, included.
I am just curious if folks think the same thing might happen for Football. My main point is that it deserves the same respect.
Coach Cal was the Petrino back in the day when it came to the Basketball search. The Press, including the Admins on this board (and they are the best for information) said there was no possible way it would happen and it did. What did happen was outside forces took control and made the best possible choice.
History may repeat!
While I see somewhat the comparison of Coach Cal and Coach Petrino. They were still a little bit different. Cal was see as shady and cheating coach who had 2 different teams forfeit entire seasons. Even if never implicated or accused of anything by the NCAA, that stigma was and is still there. We as UK fans go over it once we got to know him, and the fact he brought us some of the best players in the nation, wins, and an eventual title.
Petrino is seen as a shady and cheating person. I've never heard any accusations of cheating in his programs. He has had some players get in trouble, but as we can see, even the straight laced Joker has that issue. Drug arrests, academic ineligibility, a QB punching a cheerleader. Bottom line, kids are unpredictable and no matter how hard you are on them and what you tell them, they tend to do what they want sometimes.
Cal has thrived under the pressure of the Kentucky fan base and depending on how long he decides to stay in the game, is working towards being considered one of the 5 greatest coaches of all time. Depending on how many titles he can win.
I think Petrino would thrive to. UK football wants wins, but we are not expecting a BCS bowl in the next couple of years. Plenty of time for him to build up a program
Now, none of us on this message board know if Petrino would accept the job if offered, or if UK will even offer him. I enjoy the speculation though.
Their is and was one really big difference. Cal. "wanted" to coach UK. No one knows if Petrino will give UK the time of day.
The meanest dog in Taiwan.
The major difference is Cal was never implicated in any wrong doing. Petrino clearly misappropriated funds of the athletic department. Obviously it's not at the same level of embezzlement, but he was using department funds to pay his unqualified mistress. This is the reason that Mitch will never call Petrino. It's not about the affair, it's not about him jumping ship at his first chance, it's about the fact that he lied to his employer.
And for the record, all of those people that are interested in having Petrino has UK's coach regardless of the fact that he was having an affair better not be the same people that hate Pitino for coaching at a rival and cheating on his wife. I don't like Pitino or Petrino but that called hypocrisy, folks!
It isnt clear at all he did that. Coaches and administrators all over the country hire in family members to be parts of their staffs. Think every one of them are the most qualified for their positions, and would have been hired if their last names were different? C'mon, noone files lawsuits over those jobs being given to people with less qualifications than them, why do some of you people think that would have occured at Arkansas with Jessica Dorrell?
Tubby Smith hired his son to be his assistant at Minnesota. Tom Jurich's son works in the UL athletic dept. Mitch Barnhart hired his daughter to be a UK grad assistant(over some objections from the BOT). Is anyone going to be shocked or outraged if one of Calipari's daughters ends up working somewhere at UK? Or his son after college ends up on the bench as a grad assistant?
If you want a choir boy, Steve Kragthorpe is available.
Or the HC @ Utah, sorry his name just went away. Poof!
The issue with Petrino isn't that he had an affair. It isn't that he hired the girl. IT's that he lied about ALL of it to his boss.
No, I want wins as much as the next fan but that doesn't mean we have to be limited to coaches with scandals that have no other options ala Petrino, Leach, or Tressel....
How about guys like Kirby Smart, Gus Malazhan, Brent Pease as guys that are looking for a head coaching position? Sure these guys don't have any head coaching experience, but neither did James Franklin or Charlie Strong, and those two seems to have a huge fan club within the BBN.
My honest opinion is that assuming that Joker finds a way to be at least competitive, and I know that is a BIG assumption at this point, I would be interested to see what he can do with all of this young talent he has recruited the past two years. Next year his contract comes to an end and we don't have to worry about a buyout if he hasn't had a successful season. However, if he does continue to completely flounder the rest of this season than there would be no reason not to replace him at season's end. Not to mention, any coach that we really want is going to be coaching in a bowl game anyways, so we will have plenty of time to perform a real search.
Thanks, hop. That's what I was trying to get at!
i hate the coach cal and Petrino comparison. It's really absurd.
Coach Cal was never charged with anything. He never did anything unethical. Where do people get this comparison? Coach Cal didn't bolt a team in middle of a season either.
WOW! Off with his head I say!!
It's just an absurd comparison. No company, school, team, or any other organization in the country is going to knowingly allow a married guy to hire his girlfriend.
The US Senate did
Petrino can not coach in the SEC til 2017, don't have the link to it but his contract with Ark stated that even if he was fired from that contract, he can not seek employment in the SEC til 2017.
I don't always post but when I do, I try to make things interesting
OH NO. WHAT WILL WE DO?????
Good info there ... I hadn't heard that before.
Here's the paragraph you're talking about:
"The covenant not to compete in your current Employment Agreement will be included in the new Employment Agreement and shall be expanded to include the entire Southeastern Conference, including both the Eastern and Western Divisions. You further covenant and agree not to accept employment in any coaching capacity with any other SEC institution, including any Eastern or Western Division school prior to the expiration date of the Term and any mutually agreed upon extensions of the Term. This non-compete provision shall also apply to any new institutions in the event the SEC expands its membership during the course of the Term of the new Employment Agreement. In the event the University terminates your employment for its convenience, the covenant not to compete shall not apply."
I admit that I don't have the legal background to accurately interpret the last sentence, but I wonder if that sentence has any bearing in this case:
"In the event the University terminates your employment for its convenience, the covenant not to compete shall not apply."

Butch Davis may be a name to throw in and has been cleared by the NCAA of any sanctions
The only comparison I was truly making between Cal and Petrino is that EVERYONE, including those in the know, said that there was next to ZERO chance of it happening until late in the game. Exactly what we are hearing now.
It would be the same if Leach was available, most people want "insert name" coach. Wanting a guy that's a proven winner is one thing but the things that happen to him to lose his job is a completely different thing. There will be a lot things that will be look at for the next coach but Petrino will not be one unless Mitch has no choice. When BCG was hired, Mitch had to make a quick move and went for up and coming coach, once Mitch decide he wanted to move on for him, he did a better search for UK basketball. He'll do the same after Joker. As someone said eariler, it's the fact he almost cost a huge scandal from lying to his boss as to why he hired a certain someone.
Complete waste of bandwidth. There are no valid comparisons to be made regarding football-basketball. None.
I think it is just the SEC west isnt it? Not the entire conference..
"The covenant not to compete shall NOT apply."
Not to fan the flames of the Petrinophiles, but you're right, he CAN work here prior to 2017. That non-compete no longer applies because they fired him.
Just my thoughts:
1 -- I haven't COMPLETELY given up on Joker yet. I suspect the WKU game sealed his fate, but I still maintain just a little hope that the young guys (who have some talent) improve fast enough to pull a couple upsets by the end of the season and earn Joker another year. For a UK guy to succeed would be the best outcome of all -- we wouldn't have to worry about him leacing for a bigger school.
2 -- I doubt UK would hire either Petrino or Leach. Neither are really comperable to Cal, who had never been found guilty of anything.
3 -- Of the two, I would much prefer Petrino. He is a first-class jerk, but a proven winner, far more than Leach. And he has no NCAA violations. Hiring his mistress and lying to the school are serious, though, and probably prevent him from getting the shot.
4 -- I can't see why anyone would want Leach. He was fired from Texas Tech for mistreating his players! That is BCG territory. In fact, Texas Tech is the same school that hired both Bobby Knight and BCG. They obviously thought that Leach was worse than either one. I wouldn't touch him with a ten-foot pole.
