I know the issue with the show cause but the guy can market a team and he even took UT to the tourney and butt in the seats. Let's be honest (sorry, Bruce), what he did wrong is minor compared to other school's issues or would it be too much trouble?
I don't know. I've always had an appreciation for Pearl, both as a salesman/promoter and for his sometimes under-appreciated coaching acumen, but I just don't know that I believe he should be handed the keys to a big-time job again without earning the right to get back to that level.
He could have USC in a heartbeat, but ucla will go after someone else. They are ready to dominate, they got the top class last year even though they have been down. Anybody coach would jump at that job, other than smart, which he is going to regret. Obviously I mean non comfortable/established coaches at big schools
No you don't hire him. If he did it once he will do it again
As much underlying turmoil that has been UCLA under Howland they sure don't need Bruce, not a good way to recover !!
Yes, it would-both UCLA & USC have had some unwelcome buzz @ the program recently (USC football under Kiflin & all the disciplinary issues past couple of yrs & bad vibes @ Shabazz), and, IMHO I don't believe Pearl would be deemed enough of a bargain to attract any more unwanted attentionits the last thing they want to invite at present-he'll likely get another chance someday...but not right now under these circumstances
Didn't Pearl get a 5 year ban from coaching for lying to the NCAA multiple times?
I think UCLA should absolutely hire him.
Totally agree USC would be a great start back into coaching for Pearl however no way UCLA even looks IMO.
I saw on another site that it was 4 years and it ends in 2014, like in August.
I think UCLA either goes after an old player of theirs Kareem Abdul Jabar? or they go after a young up and coming coach. Pearl could do wonders there but I don't think that want the baggage he brings.
Kareem has been all out begging for a head coaching job for about a decade and hasn't been able to get a sniff anywhere, even in the Ivy League. Can't imagine UCLA would hire him, but hey, crazier things have happened I suppose.
Why do you think Kareem hasn't been able to land a job? Clearly something is amiss, if so. Hell, Isaiah Thomas even got hired somewhere.
It was a 3 year SC, but yes, it ends in August of 2014.
Three nights ago he told Jimmy Kimmel that he would love to restore UCLA to their former glory. He may get a chance. He would create a big buzz and probably continue last year's recruiting bonanza. I know he can coach centers, re what he did with Bynum. It would be interesting.
No idea, but if no one has been willing to make him a head coach with all that his name means in the game it would seem there are some serious reservations.
Historically Kareem has had some personality conflicts/deficiency's.
Would be a disaster for Pearl to coach USC. A coach off probation with a school off probation?
It would be like putting two recovering alcoholics together and moving them in together over a bar.
