He was laying into people who were suggesting UK could beat a bad NBA team. Not sure where that talk got started, but if it was Charles Barkley, I'm sure he was throwing a little hyperbole out there. Let's face it, no college team is going to beat an NBA team. Ever. It's men vs. boys.
He said something that really stuck with me during the argument. He says boxing and college basketball are the only popular sports where today's guys are not better than they were 20 years ago. I had never really thought of it in those terms. I think he's right.

He's right. I think tennis works in his example too.
Agreed. Tennis is awful currently, especially on the US side. Once Agassi stepped aside, it ended the golden era of tennis, IMO.
"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." ~ Emerson
20 years ago Christian Laettner was the best player in college basketball. I'll agree with Cowherd that maybe the product of college bball as a whole is not better, maybe the teams are not as good as a whole. But the individual players are much better IMO. Much much better actually.
He's right as far as teams go. If it was like it was 20 years ago, you would have players like Wall, Cousins, Knight, Lamb, Jones, Davis, MKG, etc stick around for three or four years. Can you imagine how good those players would be in college if that were still the case? They would definitely be as good or better than the elite players 20 years ago but it doesn't happen. The good thing for us, however is that Coach Cal has embraced the change and thriving with it. Its not necessary to be the best team ever, just the best team each year and have a great shot at the Championship!
Tony Kornhieser made some really great points about that topic he other day. He mentioned that before the trade for Nanee there was very little difference in the avg age of the Wizards and KY and that physically here was not much difference between the starting 5's so he wasn't buying the "men vs boys" angle. Also made a great point with the players; Other than at PG, Washington would trade every position player with UK.
That Wall was the only player they wouldnt swap with UKs lineup. Finally, he said more than likely UK would lose by 25-30 but if they were to play 10 times that KY would win 2 maybe 3 games. I tend to agree.
Shaq was a very damned good college basketball player 20 years ago too. I don't see any big man better than him in today's game. Chris Webber, a healthy Penny Hardaway, a healthy Grant Hill, a healthy Larry Johnson, Rasheed Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse, Alonzo Mourning & Jamal Mashburn were all pretty damned good college players as well from that era.
I hate this "UK v. NBA" topic. Pride goeth before a fall, as it says in Proverbs (I think).
Hell, lets beat Louisville and quit worrying about how we stack up v. an NBA team, it just shows too much hubris to even discuss it.
In all fairness to that argument players stayed a bit longer in college 20 years ago. Look at how many players have been one n done or even bypassed college all together up until recently. Comparing eras has always been a terrible topic imo. I think the best way to approach it is this. Better basketball players 20 years ago. Better athletes today. That is in all sports imo.
all stayed at least 2-3 years...if these guys stay 2-3 years it wouldnt even be close...the guys now a days r better individually...the teams were better back then...cousins would have been just as good as shaq when he was a junior in college
I disagree wholeheartedly that tennis isn't exponentially better than it was 20 or 30 years ago. Internationally, anyway, which is the way to judge tennis since it's an international sport. Tennis now is far, far better than it's ever been.
I blame soccer.
Our American youth waste their K-6 grades fall athletic season playing an unwatchable sport.
Baseball, Hoops, Tennis... All have been compromised in the wussification of this country.
This reminds me of when my fraternity soccer teams played one of the better high school club teams in the state of Kentucky. We were all 4-5 years older and we absolutely demolished the high school team, like 8-1. Age and size makes a huge difference.
I agree. Nadal, Federer and potentially Djokovic are 3 of the best ever not to mention the racket and string technology is light years ahead of where it was 20 years ago.
But U.S. tennis is down I will say that.
I think the soccer argument is a good one. Soccer has drained a lot of talent from baseball, football, tennis and to a smaller extent basketball. What have we got in return? We have a very average national team and MLS that no one even cares about.
As for as the UK vs. NBA, I don't see the Cats winning 2 out of 10 games against any team. We are good, but the 96 team IMO was better. I don't think they could have won 2 out of 10. We need to just focus on UL and then Monday night's game.
I'm coming from it as a US tennis fan. Due to the technological upgrades in equipment, it's become a game of big hitting, baseline players. Not sure that's necessarily better than the days of Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Lendl, Becker, Agassi, and Sampras.
Agreed. If Anthony Davis stayed 3 or 4 years, he would be the greatest UK player ever.
indeed. davis would have time to develop a post game and his body.
Completely disagree. Sampras in his prime, Becker, Edberg, Agassi, was Lendl still rollin in 92? Federer, Nadal, and Jokeavic couldn't hold a candle to those guys. They dominate because they only play each other. And the string technology you speak of I think backs my argument more than yours. What they are playing now isn't even tennis. It's serve and fetch. Give todays players 92 rackets and let them play the players of 92 in their prime and those 3 get rocked. imo
Carl, you've got to be kidding! Assuming all things are equal and we are playing in primes, Sampras may beat Nadal half the time, but he is only beating Joke and Federer 1 out of 10 times. They would kill his lack of groundstrokes. Agassi, Edberg, and Lendl do not beat any of them half the time on any surface. Borg could possibly give Federer a good run on clay and Nadal on grass. Sampras is still my favorite player of all time, but it's reality.
Nadal is the physically strongest player ever, Federer the most skilled ever, and Joke could be the most complete before it is all said and done. I'll give you that Sampras had the most clutch serve, Borg the best nerves, and McEnroe the best hands at the net. I would love to see these generations cross and compete, but no one from the past is beating the current top three based on their skills and conditioning during their primes.
Land The Plane
Well I guess we have to agree to disagree because I saw Sampras play in his prime and he would have smoked all 3 the majority of the time. You just mention his serve? What about his touch? What about the pin point accuracy forehand and backhand? And something not mentioned anywhere, his heart. I've seen Sampras throwing up on the court and not just competing but winning the match. After his coach died I saw him literally playing through tears and not just competing but winning. Get these 3 in a time machine, get them back to 92, give em 92 rackets, let em play Sampras. I'll give you Nadal on clay.
I call, "HIJACK!!!!".
How does a thread about UK Basketball become about tennis?
It's the week of The Final Four for crissakes. I'm even calling "Party Foul"!!!!!
lol It's not really about bball. It's more about sports of the past being better than today.
Horse racing as well. You think this years favorite Union Rags would have a shot against Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Spectacular Bid, Native Dancer, etc. No.
No, Carl. It's about the debate "Could this UK Basketball team beat an NBA team?" It is NOT about what a few of you guys PERVERTED it.
Go back and reread the Subject of the thread......Move your lips if necessary.
