in that case, put a cap on donations specifically for basketball. make those donations go towards a general fund. basketball has enough.
That's not how it works. If Joe Craft wants his name on a basketball practice facility and thus earmarks a substantial gift for that project, that's where it's going. Same thing for the Wildcat Coal Lodge. Now, if a donor comes along and wants to be 'Sammy Smith's Recruiting Room' or 'Jimmy Joseph's Club Suites' then it'll be the exact same as for basketball. Or if Joe Blanton wants to donate significant amount money toward a new baseball stadium then it's darn well going to a baseball stadium. The fact of the matter is the major donors, at this point, want to donate to basketball if they're doing a substantial gift. Until someone steps forward and wants to do the same for football it's going to be difficult for them to fund a major renovation/building of Commonwealth Stadium, etc.
He and some of the other guys on staff have demonstrated they can get the job done when they had players. The last two years have been a direct result of a gap in recruiting, not Xs and Os. Whoever is coach here in 2013 and 2014 has the potential to coach some really good talent and be very competetive in the SEC.

Very well put sir. Couldn't agree with u more.
In that case I guess we are just screwed for life, because we all know UK FB isn't a popular sport around lex. All the big money guys not wanting to help is a primary reason things are were they are right now... I would be willing to bet most of the fans who do show up at games and buy season tickets aren't even from LEX...
I think the only thing that would make big donors want to step up for the football program and do something is if we hired a BIG TIME coach. If things don't work out with Joker, Barnhart better have his eye on a big name.
I agree ole buddy...
That just isn't true. As things improved under Brooks we secured funds to re-do the practice fields, entire practice facility, get new ribbon boards and new jumbo-trons and a good friend of mine, mr. Wells from east ky put up the 1,000,000 to re-do the commonwealth stadium locker room.
The bottom line is this.
NONE of the programs in the sec have done their major expansions with private funds only. In fact they have been done with bonding. Yes some of it is done with boosters finds but most is off of revenue generated with higher ticket prices from expanded stadiums. Those stadium expansions are financed through bonding. Mitch can't bond like the rest of the
Please learn the facts before you post this stuff.

I won't, he sit there and explained exactly what we need that doesn't seem possible at this point... Yes I am upset we can't have similar things other schools have. It sucks that Big East schools can have things we can't. I fully agree he's a douche sometimes...

I know the facts, it just sucks that none of the BB boosters will step up and help the fb team. Those guys should help FB too, having a good FB program would help us in all sport including BB...
What we need is for some of the more influential boosters to put the pressure on the General Assembly. Basketball is able to get funding and bonding in most cases because enough people care about the project. I can guarantee you that if enough people wanted the football upgrades, the bonding would be approved. The football program and Joker in particular needs to become a better salesperson. Or maybe recruit Coach Cal to drum up support for bonding approval.
For all the people that accuse Mitch Barnhart of not caring about UK Football, I challenge you to answer one question. How much money would Mitch have to support the Olympic sports if Kentucky Football was successful? The lack of financial support for football upgrades does not lay in the AD office. It lays in one of 2 places. The UK President/Board of Trustees or the Kentucky General Assembly (primarily the Senate). If the President/Board would allow UK to propose bonding approval for the football upgrades separate from other bonding projects on campus and the fans let their Senators know these upgrades were wanted, the State Senate would pass them. What may be more important than 1 or 2 big boosters willing to donate a couple of million dollars to football is having a large number of fans willing to vote someone out of office for not supporting the football projects. An improved Kentucky football team would be good for all parties involved.
For the record I'm not for or against Joker or Mitch individually. I believe Joker is responsible for putting a better product on the field than what we saw last year. He needs to work on becoming more charismatic when dealing with the public and the brand of football needs to be more exciting. If those things don't happen, he likely won't be back. I hope he is successful, but more importantly I want to see UK Football succeed...with or without him. As for Mitch, I think he is one of the best AD's in America, but he doesn't necessarily endeer himself to the fans. If he would be a little more open about what he wants to do for football and not be so secretive, the fans would probably be more supportive. The fans, in numbers may be the only way to get past the bonding issues. If Mitch can get football anywhere close to the level of success that other sports are having, he would be wildly popular, no matter who the coach is.
Add up the $$$ spent on basketball in the last decade and on football. The #'s are a lot closer than you think. Football did it with no bonding while a portion of the b-ball facility was bonded.
Hoops doesn't take what FB takes across the board in all areas to be topnotch. Peanuts to caviar.
Thats so true and I think most everyone wants that coach to be Joker but somewhere the rubber meets the road and you have to win games. If Joker gets 2 more years thats fine by most people but then all the excuses have to stop if the best these new recruits and Joker can do is win 6 games. Expectations builds a program but if 6 wins is the nirvana at UK no coach will ever last.
The meanest dog in Taiwan.
Jeff, I disagree respectively. UK needs a coach who puts a competitive team on the field. All of this hand wringing about avoiding the curse of having a winning coach who would move to a better job after a couple of outstanding seasons is ridiculous. You have to win to be attractive enough to be coveted by others. It would be better to have a successful couple of years, lose a coach, and then be in a much better position to hire another good coach than the position we find ourselves now. With the possible exception of Morriss I know of no UKFB coach who has left for a better job since Bear Bryant. While Joker has not had great talent the past two years it has not been utilized as well as it could have been. His limiting Randall Cobb's touches while playing Newton is a glaring case in point. It is now time for this staff to show something on the field.
This statement is just beyond stupid.
Expectations build programs?
So all we need is expectations huh?....stupid.
So all Northwestern needs is stronger expectations and they are gonna win a BCS ship. Hmmm...and all this time i thought it was strong recruiting, solid coaching staff, game planning and preparation....above all else...
I thought PLAYERS on the field, not fans in the stands won games and build programs.
Appreciate you clearing that up.
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA There is the Tommy I know!!!
