Whitlow is a good prospect at QB and has decent speed. He is no where as elusive or quick as Cobb whose vision and quickness are off the charts. Cobb is simply one of the best football players in the country. UK hasn't had a player comparable to Cobb in my 50 years of following the Cats and Whitlow isn't either. That doesn't mean he isn't good but he certainly isn't Randall Cobb.
I'm still trying to figure out who said that Whitlow was comparable to Cobb.
Cats Den started it with this post:
"You're right ... Whitlow is a totally different player than Cobb. He is MUCH faster, but less shifty & no where near as stout. Cobb makes his money by using his head and intangibles on the field. I personally think that Whitlow has a higher ceiling than Cobb, but I don't think he would reach it on athletic ability alone. He must move to WR full time and commit to it in the film room & in his own head (which hasn't been an issue so far)."
And then it spun out of control.
Can we quit trying to compare ANYONE to Randall Cobb? There will never be another Randall Cobb.
Whitlow would be on the outside hopefully. I don't know who said he was slot all the way, but he's 6'3" with good speed, I hope to god he doesn't become our 4th slot guy (out of 6).
Whitlow's best comparison is Curtis Pulley....
1. Good athletes to each their own (but neither are nowhere close to Cobb). Neither is close as strong a runner as Cobb...then the fakes and shiftiness of Cobb is in another league. The top end speed of Cobb...he never blew anyone away in raw 40 times...but Cobb in pads seemed to have as good as speed as about anyone.
2. Whitlow is much like Pulley at QB in that neither are overly accurate. Not a pure release from either. They both wind it up a bit and have no great acumen for reading the defense.
I'm not sure Whitlow has a big role in this offense....(and never seen his role in a short passing controlled offense either). Whitlow's accuracy is a major problem for any offense that isn't read option/with heavy does of long passes when safeties suck in on the run action. As far as WR...we'll have to see. But it isn't as easy as running routes and catching balls after never playing WR in HS. Only Cobb and Burton have ever exceeded at the transition at UK....Cobbins, Roark, Fields, King was OK, McCaskill were not very good
The above post seems to be saying that Whitlow has never played WR. IIRC, Whitlow styarted at WR and was QB in reserve only.
Wide receiver is where he played in high school if not mistaken. He was backup quarterback to kid that signed with GT.
I think the thread should have been locked after this post.
A juco as WR could be important for continued depth in this offense. I would like to space the schollies out to keep replacements spaced also. Hope we land Blue.
