It seems like all I've heard all summer is how bad Kentucky's non-conference schedule is this season - and, yes, the Rupp Arena one is pretty weak - but the reality is Kentucky still makes for compelling TV. Three of the Cats' non-conference games rank among CNNSi.com's top 10 early season showdowns: Louisville, Duke, Notre Dame.
Which one are you most looking forward to?
Conference showdowns make college sports hum, but there's something very alluring about compelling nonconference matchups. Sometimes they're something new, an intersectional jolt of flavor into a diet of early-season vanilla. Sometimes they're among the best rivalries in the game. This season should be no different as there are a bunch of really interesting games already on the docket. Here are my 25 favorites. They're not necessarily the best games, whatever that means, but I think they're certainly worth a watch.
U of L, Duke, then a very very very distant third, Notre Dame.
Does anyone else play decent teams in the non-conference portion of the season? We have 3 of the 10 best games and one of those is Notre Dame?
I guess the list did NOT include non-conference games that were part of tournaments. I suspect some of the better games were part of those tourneys.
I'm more lookin forward to playing Baylor then notre dame this season
I think the Maryland game very early in the season could be very interesting. I still think this team may have some stumbling blocks at least early in the season.
Tottally agree. At the beginning of the season we're fielding what is essentially a very talented high school all star squad against a less talented but seasoned college basketball team, could be a loss.
Having three of the top 10 is impressive. Agree with the ND/Maryland comments in the thread thus far. What do you guys think of the rest of the list? Some good games, but not all of them blow me away exactly.
Your team. All the time.
Notre Dame is going to be pretty darn good, and the Irish are incredibly good at home. That's no walk in the park up there.
