Gotta get a stop!
Most analysts felt Duke's experience would win them this game. Seth Curry just showed why. Drive, pump fake Noel into air, easy lay-in.
I think UK should use this lineup more. It provides the best balance and firepower. PG Goodwin 2g Mays, sf Poy, PF KW, ad C Noel
It was our starting lineup
A lot of getting better to do yet, but we are making progress fast
Cats played hard and didn't give up, lots of positives to take away. Really need a point guard, missed Harrow big time.
why didn't JP play more
Coach K, when asked about Calipari's comments: "He has a right to say whatever he wants. We took some amazing charges."
Because he wasn't effective got back doored and didn't really play with the fire he did against Maryland. Noel has to watch tapes of Davis, he goes after every head fake everyone of them. Had he not this game may have went another way, instead of giving up an easy lay-in he blocks that shot and who knows what happens. Another thing we have to improve on greatly is our free throw shooting, but Proythress and Noel were really impresive on the offensive end but our defense isn't even close to what we will be come March. This team also needs Harrow to pan out and be a point guard, heck if nothing else he can be a better defender than May's or Polson just wonder if he was healthy if Curry would have gotten so many open three's. All in all this was a tough game that Cal will use to motivate and now our boy's need to understand that we have always been under Cal the best defensive coach in the country. Only way we can make a run another FF is to once again become the best defensive team we can be and right now were not even close!
Calipari says they don't know much more about Ryan Harrow right now, but said they need him. Just wants him healthy before he's back.
You know, I said the same about the freethrow shooting and had several people say thats the least of our problems but after the 1st 2 games maybe it will be clear that the UK players DO need to improve that skill. Your absolutely correct about Noel taking every ball fake that comes his way. Davis didnt, he waited till the player actually left his feet before going up to block the shot. Now the good things, Poythress came to play tonight and showed why he was a monster in HS now he has shown he can be one in college. I think Noel played twice as hard as he did against MD on friday and was really encouraged with the hustle of all the players tonight. About Polson I think a lot of people were too excited(including me) about the way he played against MD. We do need a PG but Im still not sure it will be Harrow but we do need him in some capacity.
Really you have to be excited about this game. We played an experienced, well coached, and talented team. A top 10, maybe top 5 team for the rest of the year. We are all young and were missing our starting pg. We hung in there and then some. Poythress finally showed up and he is going to be a national poy candidate. The defense was better. The blocking out was better. Neither anywhere near where they need to be but they improved and that's all you can ask from game to game. Get better. And they are. FT shooting killed us and that's one area that is difficult to improve. That could hurt us later. And I completely agree with the head fakes on Noel. He bites every time. Blocked shots are good. They are sexy. They get on sportscenter. And they sometimes hurt the overall defense when 3 defenders are jumping and trying to block everything. I'd rather have solid defense with 5 blocks a game rather than trying to swat everything and getting killed with fakes and interior passes that lead to baskets. That will improve as well. As I've heard Dicky V say about 4 or 5 times now, "If you wanna beat em you better beat em now".
I agree with pretty much Carl said here.
Except the FT. Some of you guys are just obsessed about FT.
We shot 14/21 from FT, which is 67%. If we shot respectable 75-80% as a team, we would have scored 2-3 more points.
If we have shot as good as the current best FT shooting team, we would have gained 5 pts.
Again, that will NEVER happen at UK.
I am more concerned about Noel (like stated above) going after everything, even fakes. What Davis did amazing was, he never got FAKED. So even ones he didn't blocked had much more different flight than normal. He may have blocked 4.7 per game, but he altered another 5-6 per game. It was absolutely insane defense. Right now Noel shows sign, but he is no where near the ability Davis was.
We also got out rebounded by Duke. No offense to Duke, but Duke isn't an example of a great rebounding team. They got out rebounded by Georgia State Panthers (who the eff are they?). We should have won the rebounding match by 5-7 against duke, yet we lost by 1.
Our defense will come in time. They usually do, i think rebound will. In fact i believe everything will improve in time, so i am not really worried.
Wildmoon I have mentioned freethrow shooting as a concern and if you looked at the MD game we were lucky that our poor FT shooting didnt cost us the game. How many did we miss in the MD game, plenty. We missed what 7 in last nights game if we had only hit 2 or 3 more then we would have been tied at 1 point towards the last part of last nights game. I think if we can get a consistent 70 or 72% out of the guys that would be acceptable. I have expected this to be our 1st loss of the new season although I also thought we had a good chance to win. There are going to be other losses but not many but the hustle factor was up a great deal last night and Poythress showed his inner beast. I was a little surprised about WCS play last night in that he wasnt much of a factor. Carl and I agree that Noel takes the ball fake every time a shooter gives him one which causes blow bys or passes to a wide open man who scores.
