Obviously we're a major player with Jackson, and frankly I expect us to land him, but is too late to get a foot in the door with Reed? I know he recently de-committed from UNC then verballed to Ole Miss, but that was before Brumbaugh was hired here. So maybe there's hope if we go after him? Just imagine a D-Line consisting of Smith, Jackson, and Reed.....

Been a Cat fan since August of '92
Reed only committed to Ole Miss 10 days ago. I'd be surprised if he flipped again so quickly.

"Apparently the University of Kentucky basketball dynasty is to continue forever." - Philadelphia Inquirer, December 23 1954.
John Talty works for the Clarion Ledger and has a sports blog. On his twitter yesterday he said Lavon Hooks was going to announce his commitment at 1 pm. He still has not and John believes new schools are involved.
No inside information, just hope for a big time recruit
Recruiting updates and news from The Clarion-Ledger
that would be crazy if it was us, i guess one can always dream
Good god I never realized the Dline talent that was available down at these Mississippi JUCO schools. These guys are ready to stuff the run and eat up QB's right now.
I have to believe that Hooks would know Stoops by reputation and would probably know Brumbaugh from his one year in MS and maybe even from his days at Auburn.
I think the opportunity to play in the SEC, to play in Stoops defense and to play with a quality player like Za'Darius would be really attractive.
All that being said, he could end up at Alabama State.
Hooks signed with Ole Miss.
Disappointing. And we will probably never know if we made him delay his decision.
Lauren Jackson on deck.
Have you seen that East Mississippi CC defensive line from last year?
DE - Za'Darius Smith (UK)
DT - Jarran Reed (Ole Miss)
DT - Darious Cummings (Florida)
DE - Lauren Jackson (Uncommitted)
Fwiw, Hooks didn't go to EMCC.
You are correct. He went to Northeast, which is in his hometown and 90 minutes from Oxford.
We might have a shot at a kid like that next year, but Stoops had an uphill battle getting him to leave home in a short period of time. (Assuming we were ever involved.)

Hey look. We have a thread going to 12 posts without a meltdown and someone calling names. I think it is a record for the site.
Jackson would b another great de for.this class. Would like to add washington at dt as well or someone else that eat up space. This dl recruitment is freakin exciting man. This is sec recruiting!!!
Exactly. Two weeks on the job and we are already getting SEC caliber defensive line prospects.
And the truth is, we need at least one phenomenal DE and DT every year to keep the ball rolling the right way. Hopefully, Washington will come back and/or Jackson (who I think is a DT) will come along to add depth.
Hopefully, we can add quality and depth at every position on the field.
Yes I agree w/ all this dl recruitment. Its got me think of our possible 2 deep along the dline. (im goin ahead and adding another juco de and juco dt to list)
Sde - smith, hughenin
Wde - dupree, juco de
Dt - rumph, cobble
Dt - juco dt,.coleman
W/ no other juco dlineman, add douglas or paschal to wde, and either tristan johnson or chapman at dt w/ cobble startin along w/ rumph.
Isn't Newton a defensive lineman? Plus there is Patrick Graffree, Alvin Davis, Zane Williams(might be a walkon), and Thomas Chapman.
Yep..Newton is a 6'5 260lb De. Also..dont forget Farrenton Huguenin..Mike Douglass. Graffree could be a beast. And if Alvonte Bell comes back 100%..at 6'6 245..that kid can flat fly and get after the QB.
Stoops has been super smart about all his hires so far. Not only did we land a very good fundamentally sound DL coach in Jimmy Brumbaugh , we also opened up a pipeline to the Miss Juco's. Brumbaugh also coached at LSU with Bradley dale Peveto on the 2007 BCS champ team..and both recruited well there. So we should also be able to scoop up the occasional Louisiana, Miss,Alabama, and east Texas kid.
I really think people undervalue La as a recruiting bed. The only major football team is LSU..and they recruit nationwide. There are a slew of very very talented kids coming out of that state on a yearly basis. Lots of speed, toughness. Lots of hard hitting safties and fast WR's..Lb's and DE's.
Yea Newton is a de but I dont believe he will initially break into the 2 deep, especially early on. Hughenin, I believe is being overlooked and really believe this kid has a lot of potential to be a very good/big time sec de in a 4-3 scheme. Kid has legit sec size/speed, just needs coaching to maximize potential.
