As I have been saying for weeks no jump shot. I love this kid, however his lack of a jump shot is hurting him and the cats.
He was definitely "off" tonight. Just never could get on track with the cramps he was experiencing.
5, 9 and 2 points in his last three games. Single digits in 7 of last 11.
Last made 3PFG on March 1. Before that, Jan. 14. (1 for last 16)
I think it is a bit of a concern moving into the Sweet 16. They need to find a way to get him rolling again. Here lately, they've been feeding Jones early on the block and getting him so momentum. Maybe Cal should try it to spark MKG's offense. I hate not getting to see that huge grin of his. For one of the only times I can remember, he didn't look like he was having much fun out there today.

He has sacrificed his offense for defense. He shut Allen who is a good shooter down. MKG is fine.
this is how I view his game too. Opponents have also focused on stopping his aggressive moves to the basket from the open court. That opens up the game for other Cats
MKG will always give you his best effort regardless of the offensive numbers. However, the last several games have been telling in that teams are not giving him the drives to the bucket and are instead letting him shoot from the outside. And if anyone thinks, to include Chad whats his name, that Royce White won't be the 2nd name called in the NBA draft after Anthony Davis then I want some of what they are smoking.
I don't think anyone is saying that he is anything but fine, but his game has definitely shown some flaws when you consider how ready he is for the NBA.
Being ready for the Nba has never mattered to the nba. They draft on potential of which mkg has a boat load. However, it is rumored that mkg's family wants him to stay another year no matter what.
He will be a top 10 pick pretty much no matter what happens, at this point. I am personally not a big fan of the idea that playing in the college game will somehow make a player more ready than playing in the NBA. However, what certainly could happen for MKG is that he could vault from a top 10 pick to a top 3 pick, which is a huge difference in money. This is largely irrelevant, but if I were a GM and had a top 5 pick I don't know if I would use it on a guy that I know is going to have a few years of play in order to get ready. However, MKG will have a different game in the NBA. The 3 point line is further out and he can sag in for mid-range 2s that he might be able to hit more consistently. The college game pretty much operates around the 3 point line, and that's a shot that is generally out of MKGs range.
Outside shot and handles in the paint. He continuously gets the ball stripped when he drives the lane in traffic. If he can improve these two areas, he becomes Lebron-lite.
He can develop his shot in the NBA same as he can at KY. No kid is a finished product but MKG is a player that every NBA team covets. If MKG want to be a lottery pick this year or next is simply his choice and has nothing to do with being ready or not.
Obviously over reacting.
Points isn't everything.
The main thing is, he hasn't even taken that much shot anymore. This has everything to do with 2 main factor.
1. Re-emergence of Terrence Jones in offensive end.
2. Rise of Anthony Davis on the offensive end.
Gilchrist has shot, 4, 8, 4, 5, 8 in last 5 games. Scored 2, 9, 5, 10, 19. It's not that bad, at 9 ppg. His really bad game came against Vanderbilt, if it wasn't for that stupid charge call, that would have been And-1, we could be talking about completely different thing.
Also, if you look at last 5 games, he has rebounded 7, 7, 0 (Vandy game), 8, and 9. Exclude the vandy game, where he DID play awful he averaged 7.75 rpg. To me, that's impressive. Especially considering both Davis and Jones been rebounding like a monsters last couple weeks.
Main thing is, he continues to disrupt opponent's offensive game.
Jeff i completely agree with you about his smile. Its just simply infectious, as is everything this young man is and does to not just this team but the fan base. He truly is the heartbeat of both this year imo. I have said many many times that if we win this thing that it will be his smile that will be the final image of the "One shining moment" video clip.
Hop, I don't really have the "contacts" around the hoops team like i do for the football team, but i have also heard that MKG will be returning as well. I've been told He simply wants to stay with Cal. I've heard there is a very genuine love and respect between he and coach, and that his mother is simply dead against him being on his own this early living the NBA lifestyle. I think Cal will advise the family that he should not pass up being a top 5 pick but his recommendation will not effect either desire.

This is all moot. He has said he's coming back. He's coming back.
Cant argue with that Carl. Lol
Its funny to me that any other player at any other program gets the benefit of the doubt when they say they are coming back, but when a product of the "Cal one n done lottery pick Corp" (even tho when you exclude the 2010 enigma of 5 1st rounders, Cal only averages 1 one n done a year) says it then there's the "well lets just want n see" sentiment.
Im really really sick of all this one n done talk lately with Cal. He is not an advocate of the rule. We all know he hates the rule. Just like Bias said, " Those coaches ripping Cal or the one n done rule are only saying, we can't get em, we don't want to play against them, therefore we just don't want them." But then again, that's ESPN for you, they report what they want to report (reminiscent of the way newspapers used to dictate news before the internet) then proceed to beat it to friggin death and or cram, shove, and force feed it down EVERYONES Damn throats.
Heres to hoping and praying that CBS Sports network is different....although i highly doubt it. If you wanna compete in that industry your probably going to mimic the "mothership"
he needs to stop power dribbling every darn time he gets the ball within 3 feet of the hoop, just go up with it, no dribble. everytime he dribbles it gets stripped.
For once in a long, long while, Carl is right. And MKG has as much said so publicly, that he intends to return to UK for another year. Good for him, and good for Kentucky!
I don't worry about MKG's productivity that much. If he scores a lot of points, UK is nearly unbeatable but more important than his point production is all the other things he does to help you win. Not really worried about his mindset either. I think he's one of the more emotionally tough players, especially for his age, that you're going to see.
I think this team is much more effective when Miller is a bigger scoring option than MKG.
With that being said, I think it's becoming more and more evident that MKG may need another year in college.
MKG is more effective shooting the 12-15 ft jumper off of the dribble than a stationary 3 ..We are going to need points from him
in these final 4 games..
I disagree that he NEEDS another year of college. He can work on his flaws in the NBA without the constraints put on practice time in college by the NCAA.
But I don't think another year will hurt him.
In my opinion, MKG is the second most efficient player on this team, and he has been for nearly the entire season. That efficiency comes from his offense where he is seconed behind Davis, and that efficiency is the product of several factors, including his shooting. However, his efficiency has been trailing off over the last 5 games a little, but I expect him to get that corrected over the last 4 games.
It should start with Indiana, against whom he had a monster game in December because I think IU has serious match up problems with MKG.
Defenses have pulled him away from the bucket and he has not looked as explosive recently. We have given him Liggins role from last year and while he can do that it is not his strength. Chasing guards all over the place may have worn him down somewhat. I think he comes back as do Lamb and Teague.
This is true. He very rarely attacked the basket yesterday. I know that's harder to do against a zone, and perhaps even something he's told not to do, but that's MKG's bread and butter. I think IU plays UK straight man to man, and that opens more opps.
Its obvious. He gives more than anyother player I can remember on a nightly basis. He's done this for 36 games and his legs are gone. He is going on all heart right now. Now this makes me like him even more but those cramps he had and the lack of smile, his legs are just gone and that doesnt come back in two or three days it can take weeks or more to truely get your legs back. Let him come back, put on some muscle and work on that jump shot. Most of all let him mature for another year kinda like Jones this year. Everyone is right basketball wise he can develop in the nba. Maturity wise he's much better off in Lexington with Cal. Plus the millions are there, that smile says it all he's having a blast in Lexington. Whats wrong with that he can and will make the money but once he leaves thats it no more coming back......Big man finish up the year get some rest work on yourself and your game, come back dominate the college scene then make your money!
Best post of the thread. This has been a big problem of his and why he gets his shot blocked so often down low. Cal is a master of seeing these types of things though and when they look at tape I'd expect he'll correct it. Instead of taking that power dribble he need to either go straight up or head fake then get up in the defenders chin. Like I said I expect that will be corrected.
But anyway the point of this thread has no point. The NBA absolutely doesn't care about his production. Its all about his potential which he has tons. He's a top 10 pick if he comes out this year. But like most have said he's even said he's coming back and I don't doubt that one bit. He needs time to develop a little socially off the court. He'll be back and he'll have a huge year on what could be another championship caliber team. Then he'll likely be a top 5 pick.
I think Jones can be a nice example for MKG. I don't think that Jones improved his potential draft status that much, but I do believe that he has improved his game more than just about anyone that has stuck around for that extra year. He has become a beast inside, and that will serve him well in the league. I think an extra year with Calipari might be a decent thing for most kids looking to the draft (and I'm not usually a big fan of the "stick around, get more prepared" deal. Most coaches don't make that big of a difference for their players. Cal may be different).

DraftExpress updated the prospects list today. MKG at #11 now, far more realistic than previous lists.
