As of this morning, it certainly appears these two are 1 and 1a on UK's list. Would love to hear people's thoughts on the two candidates and who they'd ultimately prefer.
For me, I'm just not sure. I really like the on-paper rebuilding job that Macintyre has done at SJSU. However, I have some pretty legitimate concerns.
1. His current staff consists of guys that have pretty much spent their college career recruiting the state of California, Cali Jucos, and Pacific Northwest. I'm doubtful he can bring a single assistant with legitimate recruiting ties to the states UK must live in, Florida and Georgia.
2. With that being said, who can he bring with him? Does Macintrye have the "name" that proven assistants with major ties to the South will buy into? I just don't know. That in itself is probably the biggest concern with him. If you don't surround him with a great staff from the South, you're going to continue to see UK pull in the last ranked recruiting classes and ultimately he will fail.
Stoops? No head coaching experience. He's never built a program like Macintrye has. However, he has the "name", which ultimately ends up being a huge deal.
Stoops is so plugged into the South and has such a name that he will absolutely be able to put together a big time staff.
He will have UK recruiting the state of Florida much like what Strong has done at UL, maybe better.
In the end, lack of talent is 90% of UK's problem. One coach addresses that in hurry IMO (Stoops). One coach would be a huge question mark (Mac).
As far as coaching up the players currently on the roster, it appears one guy can absolutely do it (Mac). One coach is a huge question mark (Stoops).
I think I would prefer Stoops because of the fact you've stated. He can bring in a big time staff that can recruit the south and the state of KY. I think with that and his experience as an assistant and coordinator; he would be the best of the two.
My concerns with Macintyre is that his connections limit him to the Cali Juco's and the west coast. He will need someone on his staff that can tap into the south as well as surrounding areas. That's what concerns me; I mean you can out coach someone in the WAC with little talent but in the SEC where most of the coaches are top notched and they have top notch talent.
Very fair observation IMO.
Sometimes (look @ Vandy and Ole Miss) a lower tier program coach (less of a name) works out well with much potential. I'll take experience (especially bringing a program back from the depths) over name most every time. Of those 2 I really like MacIntyre.
You aren't gonna get a coach at UK without question marks. Just like Auburn hiring a basketball coach....Either of those 2 candidates would be good hires.
I think they both have pro's and cons. The good news is that if McIntyre comes he'll have several other "deep south" fired staffs to hire from including ours. Tennessee, Auburn, & others have a bunch of assistants looking for jobs.
I'm not convinced the "sources" reporting the info have the entire story. Why? Because we didn't hear a darn thing about Stoops until saturday night. Who else has barnhart talked to that we have NO clue about? I'm just not convinced that we're as close to hiring a coach as some believe.
It's nearly 9:30 lexington time. Hard to believe we'd have a coach announced today...
If we haven't heard of a PC by this time tomorrow I'm betting the search goes into next week. NExt week is the week i thought would get us our new coach all along.
Mitch stands to gain with paitience. Jones is likely way down on the list at auburn and utk. Macintyre is likely not the top pick at cal.
Mitch can be patient.
While the staff he has out there can't be brought here, it says to me he gets it. I mean, he has those guys because he knows what he needs for where he is. I suspect he knows what he wants to do coming here. He's not from out West, so it's not like he just happened to have all those guys on his staff. He picked them for recruiting reasons.
Butch Jones or Macintyre-who would you take?
You are gonna hear another name mentioned, from out west.
Hell, I don't care.... flip a coin.
Please God, make it end.
I am not sure Mitch can be patient with as many job opening out there. Lets say for instance we were to wait Jones out. Say Stoops goes with NC State, Mcintyre goes Colorado, Tubbervlle stays put, and Dykes goes to Cal. Then Jones goes to Tennesse. All of that is possible.
With as many job openings that happened this year, if Mcintyre or Stoops is a close second to Jones, you have to tell Jones here is the offer, he says wait, you offer one of the others
But every name you just mentioned with the exception of stoops to NC State (is that a better job than uk?) is a name that is likely WAY down the list of those schools. Tennessee fans will NOT be happy with a jones hire. Cal will NOT be happy with a Dykes hire.
Tennessee probably has 6 or 7 names ahead of Jones. Could it fall to Jones? Sure, but it will take a while.
I'd offer it to stoops and Jones right now (if inteviews have happened). I'd allow them to accept but keep secret til next week. Although I think Stoops could accept, hold a presser, meet with the team and do everything he needs to do at f$u this week.
Butch Jones is a disciple of Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. Brian Kelly will be playing for a national championship this season.
My people plugged in at the University of Cincinnati tell me they think Butch Jones is a better head coach (all facets of the job of being a head coach) than Brian Kelly.
I think Butch will wait and see what shakes out in the next couple of days and will probably be a candidate at several high profile jobs.
I see Kentucky only getting Butch Jones by default and that would take a while to play out.

I agree. It's abit of a game of roulet for Jones at this point.
IMO there are only two other jobs that are "better" than UK right now that are seriously considering Jones. Tennessee and Auburn. The fans at those schools would not be happy with him so they probably have him way down on their lists. NC State and Cal don't seem likely.
If Jones waits too long then somebody like Stoops could take the job at UK.
Either way, I don't think we'll see a press conference this week at Uk...
Prolly gonna be MM but I have been told that another name could surface. He has a lot to do with Texas AM success this year and recently.
Why not both... One as HC and one as DC
Then, bring in Neal Brown as OC
I like Gary Andersen..His bio is excellent..
I personally don't want KK, if that's who you're talking about.
Would much rather have MM.
I will second that. Established winning HC, sign me up.
What worries me about Mac... he will jump at the first opportunity to be HC at Vandy. He would not commit to UK very long.
I'll take the "Big Mac"
I thought he transferred from Vandy and graduated from GTech. And didn't his father get fired there?
Jaw,there is no evidence to back that up...That is just some worried thinking on your part..Relax and let this play out...don't let those thoughts into your head..lol...
