Smith is a good QB who the players like but your assessment that he is one hell of a QB is way over the top. He has to win games to be "one hell of a QB". And beating the likes of Kent State matters "0". Putting up numbers against weak teams means nothing and don't forget, his stats came down to earth against Western. Smith has to win games. Period. That is the only measuring stick when you call someone "one hell of a QB".
Now Towles may be pissed and that's fine but anyone who has faith in Joker to deal with this or any other QB situation is foolish. I want the player that gives UK the best chance to win to play. I don't think very many people thought that Newton was the man against Florida. And the team just folded.
Now this week USCjr. comes to town and we can have this debate again after that game. I assume a healthy Smith will be playing.
The meanest dog in Taiwan.
He's a helluva QB. He's got guts. He stands in the pocket. This is not over the top. He's only been on campus 21 months (Jan 2011)....and he's going to get better over the next 2.5 years.
Remember ... Woodson took until his RS Junior year before things clicked.
Give Smith some credit......
Lol. Look at Woodson's stats his RS soph year. Smith already has more TD passes in three games than Woddson did his entire RS Soph year (6). Smith also already has more than half of Woodson's passing yards that year (like 1600 or so, i believe). Again, in only 3 games......
Go ahead and keep on convincing yourselves that Smith isnt a "gamechanger" and isnt a good QB all in the hopes that somehow Towles gets to play.....that seems to be the vibe Im getting from those around here who are somehow not happy with Smith at Qb. Its laughable actually.
Again, this all boils down to one kid being from KY (Towles) and the other not being from KY.

How in the HELL did a question to Matt about which player(s), if any, are rumored to be looking at transferring turn into a Smith vs. Towles debate? My Lord, people. Please maintain some sense of focus on the question posted instead of turning every thread into a 2-3 page argument about whether Towles, our FOURTH STRING QB, should have had his redshirt burned at The Swamp the other day.
Amen! No one outside of coaching staff has seen Towles in action, yet people "know what should have been done". Geeeeeze!!

The other day I was in a thread and some were concerned about people transferring if Joker got the boot. It's starting to look like perhaps we should be concerned about transfers if he doesn't get the boot. Of course this transfer story is just a rumor until proof is shown. Who knows what the hell is really going on behind the scenes.
That's rediculous, I dare to say that if Smith had been healthy and in the game he would have hit an open Collins or an open King for possible TDs. AND, as far as being recruited, I believe Morgan Newton was HEAVILY recruited and where did that get us Saturday...I still wonder what would have happened if Smith was healthy, I mean UF's secondary had been getting scorched this year
Damn. Didn't realize you gave birth to Max. Didn't say he didn't have perfect size, didn't say anything negative against him. Just said it was too soon to be calling him a "Great QB." I wanna see him stretch the field more and hit the deep pass against SEC comp. As for being in Towles' "camp?" I'm not in anybody's "camp." I'm for letting things unfold and see how it shakes out. Maybe Smith is great, maybe Towles is better, maybe Whitlow is the best of the lot. Its too early though to say that Smith is in an unassailable position and no one can challenge him the next three years. You however are clearly in the "camp" of 'Tetchy Lil Buggers who need to take a pill, have a nice lie down and chill tF out'.

Sorry - didn't realize there were rules about what can be discussed.....
But I'll tell you how it spiraled into the Towles v Smith debate. It started about a potential/possible transfer of a freshman, who may or may not be Towles. Which then led to a debate of why he needs to RS, and needs to accept that......part of that debate of why he needs to accept his status as a RS is understanding (as well as Towles' dad) that Smith is a good QB.
But I gotta admit - as hard as this thread was for you to read (evidently it was), I have an even harder time trying to figure out the people who think Towles should have played Saturday. The bottom line though: if he's unhappy about his current place on the UK roster, there are a couple of ways to handle it. If he chooses the easy way and transfers out, that's his perogative....but you know people are going to lay false blame on the staff (who have many reasons to be blamed, but this particular issue isn't one of them) if Towles decided to transfer.
So, ultimately, all of this is relevant to the OP in my opinion.
Chiuck I don't give a damn if towles plays or not. Personally I think Smith is the best qb on the roster. But to act like he great is crazy. He's average at best right now. Woodson was average his sophomore year but he got a lot better.
See my above post about Smith v Woodson and stats their soph years (True Soph v. RS Soph). Also, like Woodson, Smith will get better too.
No, I'm just sick of UK football fans always clamoring for the guy on the bench, when the starter is clearly doing a more than capable job. Haven't you noticed that there has been a perpetual QB controversey around here for the last 5-6 years? It's maddening.....
A wise bit of caution.
We'll see I guess. But yes, I do agree that the competition is much harder in the coming weeks.
That's why in my original post I said he had potential. Clearly he's the best qb on the roster I never said otherwise. Just saying I think UK fans are making him out to be better than he is right now.
Max Smith is pretty good and in fact about as good as any young QB in the SEC. I don't know how he could have done more. When he was healthy they called a pass on 80% of the plays and he had no running game to balance his passing. It was inevitable that he was going to get knocked out. We are like a kid with a sucker in one hand and ice cream in the other. We taste the sucker, find out it is sweet and never try the ice cream. Back to the subject, if you don't see a remarkable talent in Smith I think you are really trying not to see it. SEC wins is not a reasonable judge of a QB's ability. That is NFL talk where talent is pretty equal and you can go pick up guys over the weekend. This is UK where the talent and coaching are on a little different level.
His lone win this year is Kent St. He also threw 4 picks against western. Any way you look at it that's bad. He's not very mobile either which isn't a requirements but it helps. Just think he's overrated at the moment.
I can see both sides here. But I will say when Woodson himself said Smith was further along at this same stage of their careers , that was a pretty big endorsement in my mind.
I am in Smith's corner and I am pretty much in the corner of any player on the field. With that said, I pose this question...what would you all be saying if it was Newton that was 1 - 2, had lost to UofL, 4 picks against a mediocare Mac team Kent State, and loss to WKU? I know the answer to my own question. My point being we beat up one guy and praise another when the stats really show Smith has yet to prove himself against SEC competition. Now I hope Smith does prove himself and I beleive Max has a lot of potential to be really good, but let's not get the cart before the horse here.
That's so true. Why does no one ever comment on Smith's tendency to get injured?
Towles shoud red shirt this year and be ready to play a lot when Smith gets injured.
I dudn't see anything redeemable in our number two on Saturday and if you say it is because he didn't know the offense, that worries me even more. It's almost October for crying out loud.
