I know the D is young and shaky at times right now, but we might be in for a pretty fun season!!
As bad as it pains me to say it UL's defense looked to be SEC caliber, and Max still performed well. So, needless to say kind of excitied to see this young man grow.
I agree. He appears to be the 'real deal'. The O line needs to solidify a lot more though for Max to be able to keep these kinds of numbers up.
The "D" is what scares me. They are not very good at this point. Not sure the "O" can keep up with the miscues of the "D".
This Smith lead offense will be fun to watch and along with what appears to be improved special teams play may keep us in some games. But the defense must improve alot for us to win many of those games.
It doesnt hurt that the receivers are CATCHING the ball, and the O-line is blocking someone either.
For sure!! Not doing it alone, total team effort..
What impresses me most about Max Smith is to see how comfortable he is in the pocket this season.
Usually does not happen this early in a quarterback's career. He is making good decisions early in his true sophomore year.
One thing I don't like is his lack of a spiral on his passes. Needs to work on his release.
He may not throw the prettiest ball but damn he's accurate!
Yes, he has been very accurate.
Very impressed with Smith. It kills me to know that he doesn't have a solid D to help him out. IMO, the only way we have a chance to win SEC games is to run the hell out of the ball and control clock. If we can get Clemons healthy, and or one of the freshman backs to come into their own, we can keep other teams ofeenses off the field. We have to develop a power running game for that to happen though.
I can count the times UK's has lined up in a running formation in the past two games on one hand. This is a spread offense with 3 and 4 wides most of the time. The strength of this offense is the short and medium passing game and getting the ball to the backs in space.
I think the best game plan for beating superior opponents at this point is to gamble a lot on defense and try to get the big play. We will give up a lot of easy points that way but it doesn't matter if they are going to score anyway (that was the Hal Mumme philosophy BTW - just get the ball back to the offense, no matter how).
Therefore if you can get a team like Florida for instance in a tennis match, as opposed to a field position game, then you have a chance to get a big play off ST or a big turnover to give you the ball at the end of the game and a chance to win with a score.
That's risky but with this young defense you are not going to be able to hold off the better SEC offenses very much anyway, so the high risk/high reward approach seems like to best to me.

Smith has the respect of his team. But the numbers mean nothing against Kent State. UK should always beat Kent State by 30 fella's. Now if he does this against Florida with SEC talent then he is on his way.
He has to get by Western first which will be a better test than KS.
The meanest dog in Taiwan.
Western managed six sacks against Alabama, spread throughout the game as opposed to all being at the end with the subs in. I will be interested to see how our OL does in pass protection and running against them.
You have to play the games. Arkansas should always beat Louisana Monroe by 30 and Vandy should always beat Northwestern and Penn St should always beat Ohio. We were 6.5 point favorites. Need to celebrate this win and not discount it just as everyone blew the abd performance in the first game up we need to celebrate the good. Its a young team.
True - but we did what we were supposed to do. And that's a positive. Imagine had we only won by 7-10 points?
Pretty clear now that Max has made all the difference. If Newton was still our qb we'd still be having major problems. Max could go down as one of the best to ever play QB at UK which is really exciting.
I'm getting tired of your constant negativity about UK in general. UF beat BGSU 27-14 at home, Ark loses to ULM at home, Vandy loses to NW who struggled with the Cuse, Ole miss beat UTEP 28-10 at home, Uga beat Buffalo 45-23. Beating a MAC school by 33 is MUCH better than these games, which is what the SEC HAS done, not what you THINK they do. The SEC, outside of LSU, Bama, and MAYBE UGA are DOWN. Get use to it. and be negative to the AD and BoT if you want, but support the poor souls on the FB team that are consinently "outgunned" by other SEC teams. LET'S GO UK
