I am not sure of any paperwork he could fill out that would be upheld by the NCAA; this is not looking good and I honestly hope UK backs off this kid. Where's there smoke, there's fire. I would hate to see what is happening at UK to be tarnished because of one player. You know the NCAA is looking at UK under a microscope and going after one kid that is already having this kind of negative attention does not seem worth the risk. Cal should not pursue this kid until he is absolutely sure that there is nothing wrong with his eligibility.
No. The entire team travels for those and often times, those schools have big travel budgets.
This is no different than what John Wall was confronted with except that it involves two financial advisors. Whereas, Wall's situation involved a registered agent (and AAU coach)
Why would you back off? Worst case scenario you land him and he becomes another Kanter. You don't play him until it's all sorted out.
Please tell me you are joking Chris? You think all the schools found out about this stuff and Call will just stop recruiting him now? This has been talked about for a while and i'm sure all the schools involved have known about this long before today. The article doesnt say when the NCAA informed all the schools but I think it's safe to assume it wasn't today.
I would be BEYOND SHOCKED if Cal stops recruiting Shabazz over this. No chance of that happening imo and I still expect Shabazz to end up at UK.
Exactly. Considering the NCAA has been proactive in this i'm sure this will all be sorted out by the time he enrolls at a school. I wouldn't be worried at all to be honest.
I don't know. I guess the schools will do their individual due diligence on the situation and if they feel like it's safe enough to proceed, then I guess they'll do so.
Cough Derick Rose, Memphis cough.
The NCAA can always go back and retroactively rule him intelligible if he comes here.
Cal should run from him now. Bazz is great and if everything was kosher I'd love to have him but we don't need him. We have plenty and he's just not worth the risk. We already have Pythress. Bennett and Pollard are still in play. If we get one of those 2 and Noel we still end up with the #1 recruiting class yet again.
That is not the worst case scenario.... that would be landing him then having him ruled ineligible and having a season stripped from us....
IMHO you made a case yourself to stop recruiting him. You say we have all this drama around our program, well this is the type of stuff that fuels that drama. If the kid is already being investigated then why in the world would you want to give the NCAA more reasons to come sniffing around. With all the scrutiny on us already we need to be doing it better then the next guy and continuing to recruit a kid being investigated is not a good idea! IMO
This is particularly true if they are warning programs ahead of time, like they are doing right now.
I guess we just view the drama differently. My point is the drama, the rumors, the NCAA scrutiny is already there, it isn't going away regardless of whom Cal recruits. It was there with Wall, with Cousins, with Bledsoe even after he was cleared by the NCAA and playing for UK. It was there with Jones, both before and after he made his choice. Teague and Davis the same thing. Who doesn't recall the Davis $200,000 rumor and investigation?
My point being, Cal recruits the top players and as long as he does there will be questions, rumors, innuendo surrounding them. If Cal and UK stopped recruiting every kid the NCAA or reporters had questions about who exactly would be on UK's team right now? Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, Davis, TJ, Marques none of those kids would have ever been Wildcats.
UK didn't stop recruiting any of those guys, they didn't stop recruiting Kanter, and IMHO they shouldn't stop recruiting Bazz. As has been stated, worst case UK lands the kid and he ends up having to sit out like Kanter. UK isn't going to play him until the NCAA clears him anyway. So after that it's a crapshoot anyway, sure you run the risk of the NCAA coming back later and saying there's a problem but you run that risk with every single player anyway. Truly what is to stop the NCAA from coming back and saying Darius Miller is ineligible for some reason? As long as the rules allow the NCAA to do that every player is at risk.
"Kentucky Football needs to be and will be a championship contender in the SEC."~Mitch Barnhart 11/4/12
I guess that I just don't like it that the NCAA has already notified the schools recruiting him. I can just see them coming back and saying "we told you so".
You're right, but I think this coming out this early means it'll likely be settled before he ever steps foot on a court. Nobody at UK would let Cal play him until it's final. I realize the NCAA could still come back with "new facts", but again I just don't see that happening here. JMO.
To burn Cal and UK? Sure they would. I normally don't like to subscribe to conspiracy theories, but in this, case, they seem to hold true. I brought up Kanter because I really think if that kid goes to Washington, he sits out a bunch of games and gets to play college ball.
We have to play by different standards and several on that NCAA infractions committee are already grinding that axe against UK.
I trust Cal though. I'm sure he'll be careful.

Welcome the new generation of domination.
If Muhammad were to come to UK, I could see him being held out for much of the year as the NCAA drags it feet once again on a decision much like the Enes Kanter situation.
Guess I'll hold judgment to see how this plays out for a bit ... but this is not something unprecedented. Every single year, the NCAA sends out these same types of warning letters to multiple schools about multiple recruits. This is a typical part of the recruiting and clearing house process that goes on every single year. This one has just been made more public than others in the past.
I don't see the NCAA dragging its feet on this like the Kanter deal, because it didn't happen across the globe (Istanbul Turkey), and it is not related directly to a Pro team. Just a gold digging opportunist.
This should be one of those Josh Selby type penalties, if that. Pay back the determined amount of money, and not be allowed to play for any team that was bankrolled to get Shabazz on campus. If we are one of those, then we don't get him either.
UK and the other schools involved have known about this for quite awhile. No one has backed off, which is why he's still visiting Duke this weekend. You're crazy if you think Cal is willing to lose this kid to someone else because he MAY be ruled ineligible for a part of the season. People knew Kanter was a huge risk, a bigger risk than Bazz imo, and that didn't stop Cal.
Thats pretty much exactly what I was thinking.
Keep after him if Cal thinks so. I am so sick of the NCAA. Screw them trying to infuence recruits and recruiting, which is all this is.
Screw the NCAA? They're an easy target. How about screw greedy parents that pimp their children out to sharks when they are 13 years old?
