obviously in the SEC a very strong offensive line is something that is a must, does kentucky have enough there?
I personally for some reason really really want David Maka, we really dont have anyone to play center besides Lovell peterson but i see him as a DT.
any other possibilities or thoughts??
Other than C think we are ok om the line but we could use a C. Thats why theyre bringing Maka in IMO
The recruiting people see Peterson as a OL instead of a DL but I am sure that Stoops would like some more big uglies on the Oline if he can get them. Just having an option for either side of the ball is a big plus.
Zach Myers and Zach West have also both been mentioned at OC.
West is coming off surgery though and Meyers has never played a snap so can understand wanting more help at C
What did West have surgury on? Does it affect his ability only at center?
Believe it was on the shoulder that gave him problems last year
UK's roster needs an overhaul at pretty much EVERY single position. Yes, UK needs much better offensive lineman in order to climb the ladder of the SEC. Getting Kyle Meadows was a terrific start. I think Ramsey Myers may be the steal of this class for UK. Lot of questions about Day and Bodkin, though.
Lots of questions about Day?
Only from people who just look at stars.
Summers saw him at camp a month or so after he first switched to OL and decided he was a steal based upon potential.
Schlarman said he was a perfect fit and, from the skill he displayed, couldn't believe how little time he had spent at the position.
He was named to the Shrine Bowl (NC v SC) without being a known name. That is a result of production rather than potential.
Other than a few posters, I don't see "questions" regarding Day.
It's a need that we need to address, but we don't necessarily have to do it this yr. Miller and West (if he doesn't move) will anchor the left side of the line for another 2 yrs. And likely whomever we replace the C, RG, RT with is going to be there for longer than 2.
Have heard that a few believe (I think Stoops himself) that Meadows will start at tackle this yr....namely RT. So we'd likely have the RT position locked up for the next 3-4 yrs.
We have several guys that can play the RG spot: My money is on Z. Myers or Watson to win the position. Which means that this position is good for the next 3-4 yrs.
C is the questionmark. Obviously some members of the previous staff pegged Z. Myers is "the next guy," but that was the previous staff. Who knows? Incoming Petersen is supposed be an absolute beast at C/G.
Bottomline: We have immediate options along the o-line that we don't have at other positions....so recruiting focus is on other areas. Plus Brown's system is such that you don't need the world's best line to score pts.....but or course it helps.
Some in this thread don't understand the offense we're about to run and what we used to run.
In our old offense we had to have o-linemen who could hold off rushers for 2.5-3.5 seconds. Deep drop back and play action passes. In our new offense the ball is supposed to be out of the qb's hands in 2 seconds in about 85% of our plays. yes, we need better o-linemen. But in reality we aren't as bad off on the o-line as some beleive. Especially considering our new offense.
Will Meadows start just being 275 lbs? Sounds like he might need to put on some weight and get stronger..
i think he will, it sounds like they're really high on him and WVU and louisville wanted him bad. RT is his position.
They are going to let him compete for the job, they like him a lot
I don't always post but when I do, I try to make things interesting
What OLineman doesn't need some time in a high major strength and conditioning program?
All do, especially in the SEC with all these great defensive lines and pass rushers.
We arent in too bad of shape at OL.
Jordan Swindle 6'8 310..was fastest Ol on team last year.
Zach Meyers was benching 500lbs last year..only 10 lbs less than our starter at C in Matt Smith.
Darrian Miller is back, Eatmon-Nared could blossom..and at 6'8 335 has good athleticism.
I think Shaq Love could end up a good OG. Kevin Mitchell is back.
Jordan Watson, Toth, and the rest of the holdovers will fight for pt.
Add this class' Ol to the mix, and I think we will be ok at OL.
If the oline guys can keep from the injury bug, I think we will be alright. But like Stoops said today, it starts in the trenches on both sides of the ball for you to be successful.
great post! with all of the recruiting going on you can kinda overlook all of the players we already have so with that said after reading your post i think we will be ok, i think the center position is a big need still and i want David Makka to fill that spot if he commits and is good enough to do so.
THANKS Guys. Also..most of those OL mentioned are young..or just now coming into thier prime. Joker did ONE smart thing in stockpiling OLinmen. JOrdan Watson..a big OG with a nasty demeanor on the field will be getting some pt this year. 6'11 370lb Jake Gruenschlager could shape up and steal some reps from one of the OG's. For my money..heres our Ol nextr year..
LT: Darrian Miller 6'5 300 Jr ///Kyle Meadows
RT:Jordan Swindle 6'8 310 rFr///Kevin Mitchell
LG: Zach West 6'5 330 soph.///T.E. Nared
RG: Shaq Love 6'5 310 soph.//J.Watson
C:Zach Meyers 6'3 290 rFr///(d.Maka/L/Peterson)
I think you ave a good guess at the lineup. I wouldn't be shocked to see Meadows win the RT starting position......
Not so fast my friend(to quote Lee Corso!) I really think Jordan Swindle is a rare player. Kid is 6'8 310 and was the fastest Ol on the roster last year. I really like Meadows too..but I saw a post saying he could be used at TE some..and I think he needs a year to get stronger and add good weight(like all OL do). Its in ANY OLinemans best interests to redshirt..hit the weights..get stronger. Also..Kevin Mitchell is back..and he was our starting RT last year.
I do think Meadows will wind up being a VERY VERY good OT...with NFL potential. THis staff, and Ol coach John Schlarman in particular..is high on Justin Day..6'8 290 incoming commit..kid had only been playing football for 9 months..was a Shrine Bowl selection off a team with a poor record. Could be a HUge sleeper!
Shaq Love gets overlooked..but the former DT brings that defensive minded agression to OG..and is very quick a foot. I expect big things from Jordan Watson..kid has the right ammount of nasty in him.
Zach Meyers should work well at C..his dad..Brad..was a very good Ol for UK. Zach was also one of the strongest players on the team last year as a true frosh..so I think he should pan out well for us.
Oh no, that wasn't my opinion. I generally don't like playing younger players....especially along the lines.....but I believe it was Stoops himself that said that Meadows is likely a starting tackle next yr. Whether he is or isn't, I like where we're heading.
Agree 100% my friend! BTW..I was only trying to be funny with the whole Lee Corso thing...I will say this..If Meadows starts next year..it says 1 of two things..either he is a rare talent..or our OL is not up to snuff. Lets hope its the former! I think Meadows compares favorably to former Cat star OT Antonio Hall..but lets hope Kyle Meadows is a lot more aggressive. I wished through all this..that UK had hired Dermontti Dawson in some capacity..as a centers coach..asst HC, Rec Coord...what young OL wouldnt listen to the best C in NFL history?
On a side note..with all the shuffling of guys like Lovell Peterson..nations 7th best C..were gonna put him at DT to start. I have watched Jacob Hyde several times.. I think that kid could be a NFL Pro Bowl Guard..moves really well..is a bulldozer on his pulling plays..just hooks up and drives people. AS good as he is at DT..I think his best position is OL. He would make one great pulling OG. 6'3 335..strong as a ox..and his quickness will surprise you. I wouldnt be surprised one bit if he winds up at OL.
One thing Joker did right was stockpile OLinmen..we will see the fruits of this in 2014/2015..when these young OL are juniors/Seniors and the incoming kids will be sophs and RS Frosh.
My mock 2015 Offense.
QB: Max Smith Sr or Pat Towles...Drew Barker??
RB: JOJO Kemp //Mobley//Taylor possibly Damien Harris..as a true frosh? 6'0 220 4.3..wow
WR:D.Sweat Sr ///D.Yancey soph
WR:R.Timmons Jr //AJ Legree Sr
WR:R.Samples Jr. D.Collins sr
TE: Dowdell..some new recruits!!
LT:K.Meadows 6'5 320 Soph// J.Day 6'8 320
RT:J.Swindle 6'8 330 Jr //
LG: S.Love 6'4 320 Sr//J.Watson Jr
RG: Z.West 6'5 335 Sr or J.Hyde 6'3 345 soph
C:Z.Meyers 6'3 310 Jr or L.Peterson 6'3 310 soph.
THis would have us very experienced across the board..very very fast and athletic at WR..and this dosent take into account any 2014 recruits at WR/RB that could be instant starters. Look at that OL..HUGE..LONG..and Experienced!!
I think 2015 could be a HUGE year for UK football..Stoops will have 2 classes with experience and the 2015 class with any potential early contributors. Stoops inital 2013 class would have 2 years under thier belts..we will be deep across the board..especially at OL and DL..where you absolutely MUST have depth. Our defense would be deep and talented as well..full of young Stoops recruited talent. You would think with how things currently sit..our East rivals would be young at QB and possibly OL..and If your like me and saw lots of talented frosh last year that could conribute and blossom under the right coaching..(the Blaylocks,Harmon,Quinn,Tiller, Thomas,Henderson, Huguenin) and throw in all the Stoops recruits..possibly Marcus McWilson, the Alexanders, Reed, and 2014 is loaded with defensive talent..I think a BCS bowl..SEC East crown, mabye..(just mabye) a run in the 4 team playoff wouldnt be such a huge stretch. Well..Ive gone too far now..LoL..
Who said Meadows could be used some at TE? In this offense? Actually catching passes? Please expand on that for a brother.
