I have made it clear how I feel about the hiring of Bobby Petrino for the HC job at UK and here is why. In Nov. 2003 BP was the newly hired coach of the Louisville Cardinals and during that 1st year BP met with officials of Auburn across the river from Louisville and this was a hush hush meeting meaning no one from the UL AD office new about it. When it was brought up BP denied it to the media, fans and the UL administration. But in a short time he was confronted by the media and again denied it until they produced proof and remember neither schools season was completed. BP continued in private denying it until Auburn officials admitted to the meeting.(strike1). 1st part of 2004 BP interviewed for ND hc position again w/o ADs knowledge, then on Dec7th he pledgesd his undying loyalty to UL, Then 2wks later he interviewed for the LSU HC job.(strike2) Then in 2005 he stated he wasnt interested in coaching at the pro level, then shortly after that he interviewed for the Oakland Raiders job.(strike3). In July 2006 he sighned a 10 yr. extenstion w/UL and said he wanted to raise his family there for a long long time, then 5 months later he left UL and took the Falcons job(strike4). A few months later he left the Falcons w/o saying anything to the players and they really reacted negatively to him doing that.(strike5). Then he took the Arkansas job and everything was quiet for a time and then the motorcycle wreck and all that came out due to that wreck including the affair, hiring his mistress and lying about all of it to his employers.(strike6). So those of you who think I have lied or made all this up just Google BP and read the different articles about this mans history and ask yourself: Can I trust him to be loyal or faithful to UK and its fans? And if the answer is no then you have your answer to whether he should be the coach at UK. If your answer is yes then you do what you have to do to get him hired but dont say you havent been informed in advance.
Of course he was interviewing at other jobs. ND, Auburn, LSU, and the Falcons compared to Louisville?
Come on... that's like being the manager at the local gas station, and then one day Exxon comes in and wants you to be the CEO.
Who cares if he told the AD? Is he required to tell the AD? No. Why would he tell the AD he is looking at other jobs, when he doesn't even know if he will accept or be offered the job? That would likely cost you money. Trying looking at it from Petrino's perspective for once, instead of your high horse.
If anything, that is a mark against those schools for interviewing a sitting HC w/o notifying the school you intend to interview him for their HC position.
In a lot of HC contracts it is required for a coach to inform the AD before he interviews with another school. But thats not really the point, its that he lied to everyone about all those things I listed. Once a person shows a propensity to lie it usually doesnt stop and do you think he wouldnt lie to the AD here to get a job to get his foot back into the coaching profession? If you and all the people who agree with you about Petrino gets their way then I wish youy well when this whole search saga begins again in a relative short period of time and dont think for a second if he got the UK job and for some reason LSU would need a coach next year, Petrino would be the 1st person to contact them, but you already know that and you would probably say what coach wouldnt trade UKfor LSU. A s a former player at UK I would no longer follow the Cats and would feel aweful about it but thats how much I feel BP is the wrong guy.
I wonder how many have ever interviewed for a better job but never told their current employer???
I agree sleepy. The man has no integrity whatsoever. What a great quality to teach young men
Moot point if those in that group of "how many" are not under a contract involving large sums of money that requires them to inform their employer or receive permission from their employer to have contact with a new employer.
In "strike 1",Petrino is not being criticized for talking to another employer but rather for not doing so according to contract obligations designed to protect his employer. Further, he lied about it repeatedly. Furthermore, Auburn (his potential new coach) asked him to not contact other coaches so as to keep the discussions private and he agreed. Contacting a coach with intentions of bringing him to Auburn is what tipped off the media.
So, in "strike 1", after deciding the fact that he didn't tell his current employer he was talking to a potential new one because lots of normal people do that, the following is still left: not meeting contract obligations regarding informing his current employer of talks, not keeping the promise he made to his prospective new employer. (This is after leaving out lying to the media and everyone else because they are not the current or potential new employer.) Those are two significant factors to take into account.
This isn't a pro or con Petrino stance. This is pointing out that these "warts" as some call them are significant and must be given significant merit when discussing the possibility of hiring said individual.
I sure hope Mitch isn't interviewing any coaches with jobs!!! That would be wrong we can't do that!! I'm not saying I'm for or against Petrino but I am saying that there are many hypocrites among us.. If Mitch has interviewed anyone they are scumbags!!!!
I say Bobby Petrino has low thread count as to moral fiber. He is a horse's ass. He is not loyal.
I say HIRE HIM today! UK football needs this scoundrel to turn this mess around.
Being a laughingstock opponent in the SEC has gone on way too long.
Sleepy ... I agree with you. But, unfortunately I think you're wasting your time trying to win people over to your point of view. I've given up trying myself. There is a large portion of our fanbase that is willing to sell our souls to the devil for a few football wins and who don't care about the national image of the program or the consequences down the road.
If it is Petrino ... then so be it ... I'll still root for the 'Cats and hope for the best.
I'm sorry but I think you need to reread the statements made because nothing has suggested that it is improper to interview coaches with jobs but rather it was pointed out that there are procedures required to be followed by contract (notification of current employer, possible need for permission) not required by typical jobs. Those procedures were not followed. Plus, this doesn't even cover that the potential employer (Auburn) asked Petrino not to talk to other coaches so as to keep things quiet, he agreed, and then broke that agreement.

Romp, don't bother. History is being selectively cited concerning Bobby Petrino and nothing will ever change anyone from their stance on him, no matter how many times you point out the real and valid concerns with his hire.
Like children, some have removed rationality from the discussion to further their fantasy.
Awesome. Another petrino thread.
Just what we needed.
I must remind you that scores and scores of people who don't live in or have a tie to the Commonwealth of Kentucky feel UK has already sold their soul to the devil and our national image of the program or the consequences down the road for a few NCAA basketball championships.
How soon you forget?
National perception is not the biggest problem with hiring Bobby Petrino. As a matter of fact, it's not much of a problem at all.
I agree. I think I must have removed my rationality too for even bothering. :D
As soon as Cal is named, charged, accused, proven or convicted of any wrongdoings by either the NCAA or any of his previous employers ... and not just by public opinion ... let me know.
You totally miss the point.
The poster I replied to made mention of "national image of the program" by hiring Bobby Petrino as our next football coach.
If you don't think our "national image" of our basketball program is not negative nationwide, you have your head in the sand. I didn't say it was warranted, but the negativity certainly exists.
I say.....who cares what others think. Our competition hates UK in basketball because of the dominance and love us in football because of the ineptness. Hire Petrino and make a big stride in changing the culture.
Loyalty between a coach and his employer is a nonissue. That's why they sign contracts to specify remedies in advance. Obviously all of Petrino's employers had this recourse. Loyalty is a two-way street that was closed eons ago when employers started firing coaches willy-nilly. For every coach that quits his job for a better one, there probably are more employers who fire their coaches for a chance to get a better one. I don't see where "loyalty" has a place here. It's a business, period. It is ruled by legal contracts which are enforced, or not, by the courts..
Sorry you feel that way but just remember that you dont have to click on any thread you find boring or repetitive, but you did. I did this because I was called a liar about the facts on BP I presented on someone elses thread and wanted to set the record straight. Now I know this wont convince anyone of anything because I think everyone has already made up their minds about BP on both sides of the fence. Unlike the person that ? my integrity on the other thread I would never call someone a liar and put it in a sports thread.
I agree whole heartedly!!! Sleepy...the man has proven over and over and over that he is faithful..to NO ONE. Not his AD, HIs Friends, His program, not even his WIFE. Even if he did come here and win..hed leave for the 1st gig that payed more.. Great post imo. Up vote here my friend.
Let me help by supporting this moral thing with some football knowledge...Biker Bob is 17-15 in the SEC...WoW..thats so great..guy went to a BCS bowl vs a mild Ohio St squad ..got up huge..then folded up like a lawn chair. Hes 4-3 in bowls overall. Hes left both UofL and Ark in shambles in his wake of disloyalty.
The best thing is Mitch knows this too..and Bobby P will NOT be our next HC..or will he ever be OUR HC. THank you footballgods..do we really want a guy like him leading our young men? BP should consider himself lucky if he gets another chance...man has no morals..no honesty..no integrity. A guy that will cheat on his wife will cheat period..
Dont let the bashers get to you sleepy..so many are bashing Mitch...they are silly. Guy has hired Cal, Gary Henderson, Matt Mitchell..all homeruns...and he hired Brooks..who took UK out of the doghouse and gave us a reason to hope for more. I say let Mitch do his thing...hes not gonna ask Bobby P to come..so no reason to even squabble with all the BP lovers. When Bobby P gets his next gig...I hope it is at a SEC program..so that program will be in shambles in 3 years or so after he leaves for a better paying gig.
I think you are mistaken in that the situation with Cal is nothing like the 1 with BP. Cal has never been charged or convicted of any NCAA rules violations and he has had a good relationship with his former employers as far as I know, but the case with BP its the very opposite of Cals. He has lied, cheated and had poor relationships with his former employers,BP that is. National image to me has nothing to do with the hire of BP but it does matter. The whole thing has to do with trust and loyalty although there are some that think those 2 things dont matter as long as BP gets us wins. What those people dont realize is that he is likely not to be here long enough to get in a position to get those all important wins and this is based on his history with other organizations he has worked for.
Great post!! Cal is under so much scrutiny that if he is cheating..it will be found out..guaranteed! Had Kanter went to Duke..or UNC..or Kansas, UCLA..how much u wanna bet he would have got to play? Last time I checked..Cal wasnt cheating on his wife..or lying to his AD..Cal is just the best recruiter god ever created..and people hate him for that. So friggin what? What miffs me is the so called greatest John Wooden DID cheat..yet all those titles were not stripped from UCLA...even the NCdouble a**holes hate on UK. But why not? Seems like over half of the so called Uk fans here hate on Uk too..LoL.
Hehe..it is getting a tad repetitive..Hehe it is getting a tad repetitive...lol..Hes not a option..hes not coming...Thank God..lets get over the Bobby P love/hate debate..guy is a scumbag..and owns a awesome 17-15 SEC record at ARK..whoopdie friggin Doo...Id rather have Joker than BP. My greatest wish is Bobby P lands at UT..so they will be a wreck after some WAC or BIG 10 teamoffers him a mil more a year to come and destroy thier program. Where is ARk now? Where was UofL after he left? So much better than before he got there...right.
Now someone is saying their sources say he was hired 2 weeks ago. I bet that will be news to Mitch.
You don't have to trust him to be loyal. Put a $10 million buyout and a SEC no-compete clause in his contract. Then if he leaves after 1, 2 or 3 years, he has effectively coached here for nothing or owes us a big payment. At that point, we could hire the same person we're getting ready to hire and still be ahead of the game.
