He's coming back to Kentucky next year.
Makes one think a) what the hell happened? and b) why didn't we see this in the second half of the season?
Great questions! I wish I knew the answer. Hopefully we will see him again on a full-time basis during the next couple of years. GO CATS!!!
Wow! I forgot that guy existed....hope we see more of him in the future.
I mean...I was at that game. I remember it well but somehow had managed to block it out of my mind.
That version of Alex Poythress is a BEAST. Huge dunks, scoring on putbacks, midrange jumpers and 3s. Showing a ton of emotion and looking like he's having fun.
First player since Jodie Meeks to go for 20+ in four straight games.
Bingo. Asking the same questions. Hopefully we will see a transformation next year or we may not see him at all. I believe he will be motivated as competition will force him.
He could potentially become the biggest piece of the puzzle next season if he plays up to potential and develops into the kind of player we all believe he can be. He could make us unstoppable
Momentum will be the key for the team next year. AP, KW, and WCS will play with a chip on their shoulders. These guys will have a hunger and something to prove. You add that to the talent and expectations of the incoming freshman and things get interesting. I will expect the practices next year to be meat grinders getting these guys ready. I think that you will see a team and will want to beat and bang. I would expect the half-court offense to be the best of the Coach Cal era.
I have a feeling that Alex will emerge as a leader of this team.
That would be phenomenal if Alex became the leader.
Watching that video gave me mixed emotions.....excited for the Alex we could see next year and pissed off at the one we saw most of this year.
I wonder the same thing. Watching those highlights it's clear that his motor is on and his emotions are high. I wonder what turned that off over the season?
That first putback was insane. Still remember watching and thinking AP was gonna be a star. I hope he proves me right.
IMO, it was a combination of a lack of leadership and the team getting "hijacked". You can have all of the talent in the world, but if you experience this type of collapse, it is very hard to overcome.
I have a sense that Alex will be on a mission this coming season and we will see something special from him.
It was one of the games without Ryan...
Also, Duke had Ryan Kelly. What happened to Kentucky to go from there to losing in the first round of the NIT?
Wow, that didn't even look like the same team let alone just zooming in on Alex.
Safe to say that this team got worse as the year went along.
Hopefully next years kids can bring that back out of Alex.
Makes you wonder what exactly was going on behind the scenes.
Yeah, this team clearly got worse. After the Duke game I thought they would be solid come March. We all know how that ended.
The man thing that Alex will need to do is remember that he is Alex Poythress.
There was pretty clearly some form of malcontent or personality issue going on behind the scenes this year. The fact that Archie and Harrow are both leaving and the others guys are not is pretty telling, IMO. I worried that Kyle Wiltjer might have had a bad attitude during the year, but he seems completely on board right now.
I really believe that he will wake up and find that player again because if he doesn't he will not see the floor. That is the luxury that Cal will have next year - the ability to say to guys like Poythress, "If you don't play like this (i.e. the Duke game), you will sit."
Think about how Terrance Jones grew into his role, body, and potential in year number two when surrounded with great talent AND great personality. I don't think he ever sank to a Poythress kind of low, but the potential for Poythress to rise to a "second year Terrance Jones" level is absolutely there.
I remember thinking 'man, this team beat Maryland and they played Duke tough at a neutral site. They are going to surpass my expectations.'
Terrence Jones, as a "Calipari Senior" (heh heh ) was one of the most powerful players I've seen in college basketball. When he was under the basket you just didn't mess around with him. And he did it without being a foul machine. I'd love to see Poythress develop into this, and he certainly can.
Watching it makes me wonder.
He is fighting like crazy to get that rebound. hrmmmm
I still think there are some skill/athletic deficiencies to his game. Things that he can improve but combined with his motor issues really stand out. Call me a skeptic with Poy. When a kid has effort issues they usually just fade into the background because they are ok with being average. I think there will be times like the highlights in this thread where he looks like the best player you've ever seen but he will always struggle with consistency.
Two words... Ryan Harrow. He hurt a LOT of things on this team...
Cal wanted archie back. He said as much publicly and did privately. Archie saw the writing on the wall with what is coming in and made a poor financial decision. Archie's personality would have fit in beautifully next year. Harrow on the other hand...
Wow, I forgot how good he looked early on. His entire attitude changed. His body language and expression were completely negative the end of the year and for months. I had forgotten about the mobility and effort he was capable of putting into the game.
