Via WDRB's Rick Bozich:
"They have to do what Louisville did (in 1984), take a long hard look at themselves, admit they have a problem and need help, the way an alcoholic does," Schnellenberger said.
Former U of L coach Howard Schnellneberger, a UK alum, says the Wildcats can succeed in football and basketball.
Howard makes me laugh. I think we screwed up by not hiring him when we had the chance, but winning in the SEC is a whole different pot of beans as compared to winning as an independent, even in the 80's. You gotta wonder where we'd be now if we would have hired him though. He was a visionary.
Which he fully admits. When he asked if UK was a more daunting task, he said "Heavens, yes". We need a visionary like him. Not sure who that is, but it's got to be someone who demands a whole hell of a lot from his players, the fans, and most importantly, the administration. Barnhart has a mountain to hurdle.

I Think what we need is a football coach with Caliparis philosophy about how to run a college sports program. There are 2 ?s 1. Is there someone out there like that and 2. Could we get that person to come to the KY football program the way it is now? The answers are YES and NO.

You're right, UNLESS we give him everything he wants. It's simple math really.
If all else fails "CHEAT"!!!
I happen to agree with Howard. I believe there can be positive, significant change here. I also agree it will take time. More than anything else it will take a patient fan base and an AD that is willing to ignore us when we get disgusted with losing seasons while it is being built block by block and scream for the coach's head.
We don't have the talent here in Kentucky to fill an SEC roster like Florida or Texas. Recruitment needs to addressed and we will have to turn over every rock to find the right players. We won't get the 4 and 5 stars but there are a ton of players in the NFL that were 3 star and lesser recruits in high school. They need to be coached up but it happens at other places. It can happen here as well.
But the coach is only part of it. The university has to step up and be willing to win. It will take creative planning and financing initially but I do believe it's money well spent. The fans will support this program. We follow the team like a locust plague to bowl games taking over entire towns. Our success means dollars for the economies of a lot of communities including Lexington. There's really not a lot of competition for the entertainment dollar in the state so that plays into it as well.
Also we need an egomaniac coach not a nice guy. This ain't Sunday school. The blueprint to build a powerhouse program is just down the street. Bear Bryant had a huge ego and he couldn't live in the shadow of Rupp. But times have changed and it's possible for both programs to succeed. I'd love to go into the football off season every year wondering if our head coach was going to leave for a better job.
Question for you, and I agree with pretty much everything you're saying, but do you really think an egomaniac coach would/could endure the presence of Cal, another egomaniac? That's difficult to juggle. I'm just tryin to play devil's advocate.
However, I do agree with you. Our next coach has to have an ego and has to be charismatic if we want our program put back on the map. He has to be able to sell our program in a big way.

I read this article earlier and I think Schnelly is spot on. We need a leader. An ambassador with vision. In every single phase of the game.
I don't think Cal would care about that in the least. Of course football is the cash cow of the athletic department. He'd probably embrace the football side start doing some of the heavy lifting so he can pick his projects...Haiti earthquake telethon for example. He's all about the Kentucky brand. 7-9 football wins each year isn't gonna stop him from shooting for 40-0.
Hire Howard as director of football operations and maybe he can bring our program back to life..Lord knows we did him wrong years ago and this could help
alleviate that situation a little bit..
Howard, while he is spot on is not moving out of Florida to come back to KY at his age.
You can't build a football program with Cal's philosophy. UK under Cal is simply an 8 month rest stop for the best recruits heading to the NBA. Football is a sport that requires recruiting kids that actually want to be part of the university and the community for 4-5 years of their lives.
