Easy board...I too find Stevie pompous and hard to take, but even I must admit that he must have some cred when talking about being successful in SEC football...Point: At SEC media days he attributed his current success at South Carolina not to his own genius but to the upgrading of the woeful facilities he found upon his arrival...The first team that I can remember following at UK had Charlie Bradshaw as coach, and the common denominator ever since has been the lack of funds spent on the program...Our facilities are outmoded, our recruiting budget is in the lower third of the league, and we do almost no marketing of an imaginative nature for the program...I would say it might have been one of the low points in our football history when Joker recently had to almost beg the fanbase to support the kids regardless of what it thought of him...Damn people...No man that you could put in the position of head coach at Kentucky could care more about the program than Joker...I know him, and it kills him to see the response of the fans after last year...Believe me, he knows that changes are needed...To be fair I think it would be nice to put him on a semi level playing field instead of scouring the country for some big name that will automatically remedy the programs deficiencies with just his presence...Remember Bill Curry?...The problem ain't Joker!...The problem is whether or not there are enough people with POWER in this state that give a damn about U of K football...
Definitely a lot of truth there, Scars. Unfortunately I think this recurring thread becomes quickly entrench in rhetoric and bashing. Joker gets it. A lot of people realize that, but like you said--when you're only given so much to work with....
About 1/3 of your post is absolutely factually incorrect. The thought that our facilities are "outmoded" and "we do almost no marketing an imaginative nature for the program" are not true.
Outside of a recruiting room (something not used by current players) our facilities are amongst the top 25 in the nation. The Nutter center has been completly remodeled in the last 5 years and is now a show-piece. The practice fields have been completly replaced. The Nutter Indoor training center has undergone a massive facelift that includes new lighting, new turf etc... The gamdeday locker rooms were completely gutted and replaced 3-4 years ago.
The thought that our practice facilities are not good is 100% false and couldn't be further from the truth.
We need a recruiting room, no doubt. We need a facelift and club seating for our stadium. But the facilities that the players use on a daily basis are very good.
You make a good point, Hop. I guess I gravitated more towards the deeper fan support elements of the post. A lot could be done, but many things HAVE been done, you're absolutely right.
Definitely is tough though when you string together several good seasons and up the ante, but then one bad year (through the aligning of a lot of negative stars) and we're ready to run the poor fella over AND put it in reverse.
I respect your opinions, but when we bring recruits to Commonwealth I consider the atmosphere and the stadium to be facilities that are put on show as much as Nutter Center...I also respectfully disagree about the marketing aspect...What does UofK do other than spread a few billboards around the state?...Also, I do not believe it "factually incorrect" to say that our recruiting budget lies well in the bottom third of the SEC...When our recruiting base needs to be nationwide it stands to reason that we need to ante up...I simply believe that too many fans have the opinion that a coaching change will solve all the deficiencies inherent in the way the program is run...When the names Petrino and Mike Leach come up for serious discussion in some quarters I tend to believe that the inmates have gained control of the asylum
Having been to nearly every stadium in the SEC the only one's I would consider "nicer" than commonwealth are Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia and "perhaps" tennessee. The "environments around Bama, arkansa and Georgia are better. but teh actual stadium facilities are clean and well kept at commonwealth. LSU, Auburn, Miss.state, Vandy, and Auburn are outdate and NASTY facilities. Ole Miss is a pretty nice stadium probably in line with Commonwealth stadium.
Now, the gameday experience revolves around how good each of those teams are playing that year. 2/3 years ago under brooks and joker's first year we had some absolutely electric atomospheres. The Auburn game and USCjr games two years ago and the Tennessee game 3 years ago were amazing.
The technology in CWS is now very good with the jumbo-trons etc.
As far as the marketing. I disagree. Joker is out in the state a ton marketing the program and speaking to groups. What do you want? TV commercials? What are your ideas? More has been done in terms of "branding" the last 3 years than the previous 100 combined.
We seem to be on differing tangents...My theories revolve around an infusion of money to make money...Yours seem to be that everything is in place for the program to succeed...I suspect we could debate this question for days and neither of us would change our opinion...Agree to disagree
I just encourage you to go on line and and look for yourself about the facilities, look what the teams we play in the SEC doing and planing and draw you on conculsion, don't go on a somebody word who has "toured" the facility
I bet Steve didn't get these changes in the first couple of years..He probably won a few games and plus he is freaking Steve Spurrier who won a NC at Florida..If he was he at UK and wanted money, bet he could talk them into it. We don't have a coach with that type of record...so guess what you have to produce first, then the check books will open..
LOL you can't be serious? We can agree that our facilities are better than most want to believe, but to claim Commonwealth is a better stadium than LSU makes me stop reading. Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Bama, Arkansas, Auburn, and LSU all have much better stadiums than us, and I do not mean solely from a capacity standpoint. Further, they appear even better than they really are because of the top-notch game day atmosphere they provide. Conversely, Vaught-Hemingway is nice, but it is a cracker jack stadium, well below Commonwealth's stature in my opinion.
Before you ask, yes, I have been to all of these stadiums. I would venture that A&M has a better stadium than we do, but I haven't been... yet. I don't know anything about Mizzou, but I would expect them to have a similar facility to Commonwealth. I have no idea what MSU and Vandy are like, but I would expect Vandy to be like Ole Miss (without the Grove of course) and MSU to be similar to Commonwealth.
We have to be realistic here... Death Valley is one of the best, if not the best, game day stadium in the country.
I've been to all the SEC stadii. While there are differences, the magnitude of the quality differences are relatively small IMO (TN's seats are an exception - very narrow both in width & depth between rows. Really about a 95K stadium.). If size matters, sure, some win on shear size. But that doesn't mean they're nicer to watch a game at. Smaller is actually better. And seats close to the field are better. Those with hedges & walkways in front of the stands push the fans further away from the action (SC's first few rows in particular are impossible to watch from.). There's less sideline room at CWS than about anywhere. Great! Also, UK's relatively shallow lower deck and the lack of club seating between the decks means our upper decks are about the best view around. I hate to think about putting club seating between the two decks. That would move you way up - like at LV & whose upper seats I hate.

Haha is stadii really the plural of stadium? I would never have imagined that.
Well, I'm wrong. It's stadia or ums.
haha I'm sticking with stadii!

(Quote) Franklin also stated that administrative involvement and capital improvements that have gotten underway were major reasons they've been able to improve their recruiting.(unquote)
Matt May reply:
Vanderbilt is getting now what UK has already done in the last 10 years.
The only thing Kentucky lacks is a renovated Commonwealth Stadium. It has everything else you need. When they can find a way to come up with $100 million to do those things to CWS then Kentucky's facilities will be every bit as good as the rest of the league's.
