I heard this from Coach Rich Brooks. The SEC is an arms race in football. Lots of money, lots of interest, the best of the best coaches, players, facilities.
UK is fighting this battle with a one shot BB gun. Mitch needs to quickly realize that he better make the right hire for his next head football coach and he better equip him with the necessary tools to compete in this jungle.
Only the most fit can survive in the SEC and in UK's case, it might take a decorated navy seal to be able to stay alive. It is a huge investment......maybe one that UK is unwilling or unable to make.
This arms race began decades ago, and UK was unwilling then to keep pace. As a result, today, as the intensity of that arms race grows at ever increasing rates, UK finds itself so far behind the majority of the SEC that it faces a near impossible task to just try to keep pace, much less make up long lost ground.
You, too, have been around a while to see it all unfold.
Rich Brooks did stabilized it and had it with a good foundation to build on and gain on all those other powerhouses, but he did not have the total focus and commitment from the athletic department and threw his hands up in the air.
Also, he passed the baton to the wrong guy and UK has dropped from the middle of the pack and fallen out of contention in the race.
My days of following UK football go back to Charlie Bradshaw. I have read a lot about Blanton Collier, and Bear Bryant's legacy at UK and afterwards, are well know.
One of the issues that Bear Bryant could not accept, and Blanton Collier tried to change but couldn't was a UK dictate in the 1950s that UK football would only recruit within Kentucky. Bear new that would not work, so did Collier. Collier was a Kentuckian, and tried to work within those dictates while trying to change the policy. He failed on the latter, and was fired with a winning record. The program has never recovered.
