I highly doubt Pastner will be considered. He just now starting to prove himself.
I don't see how Smart can turn down the UCLA job to stay at VCU. He could take another job instead, but you just can't turn them down if they come calling. Not everyone is a Stevens. The money will be quadruple and you have to strike while the iron is hot.
With that said, I agree that you need to do everything you can to stay on the east coast, but at a big school...not VCU.
Shaka has turned down other solid program but I don't think he's had an opportunity like UCLA yet so I would agree that he can't turn it down. Or I'd be surprised if he did. Thats certainly not your Illinois or Kansas St. type program. Its a blue blood type program on par with UNC and IU.
If VCU can get into the new Big East it would be better for Shaka to stay. He has at least a 5 -7 year grace period at his school since he got them to a final four.
I thought the new BE was set and VCU was left out?
If VCU is left out Shaka should the take UCLA job no doubt. It will be a huge step up for him. his recruiting will be major question
I thought Muhammed was about to land them on in trouble? If thats the case, they will probably get a 2nd or 3rd tier caliber coach.
I don't think there is any evidence of that happening.
Think Smart could actually land a better job w/a program in a relevant time zone-after Dec, who hears/knows/cares anything @ hoops W of the Rockies?? Minnesota might even be a better job at this point in time-imagine the new look Smart's style would put on the B10...
Would certainly be an interesting contrast. Sounds like he's leaning toward staying at VCU though.

What about Minn. was on another board and some Minn fans were saying Smart to Minn. what do you think I mean a lot less pressure there than UCLA.
The reason Smart is NOT a "home run" hire and I wouldn't be crazy about him if I was a UCLA fan is because he has never had to recruit against the other big time programs. At UCLA he will need big time talent to meet their expectations...he's never landed a SINGLE big time player. There's a big difference recruiting against George Mason and company and recruiting against Zona, UK, etc.
You can make a run in a single elimination tourney with sub-par talent...you can't win in conference with sub-par talent on a consistent basis. He could prove to be a great recruiting at this level, but my point is he hasn't done it yet so I don't think he has proven he's a "home run".
I think Pastner is more proven...he's recruited and won at a higher level than VCU. The only advantage I can see Smart having is one final four run.
You might also look at it from the standpoint that UCLA is a much better platform to recruit from than VCU, and that he will have the opportunity to attract the sort of talent that's difficult to attract to to the A-10...IMO, he's done more w/less than Pastner who's only NCAA win to date was life and death against a lower seed, and who fell apart like a cheap suit when challenged by Mich St (just like they did earlier against UL)-Cal laid the foundation that Pastner's just maintaining @ Memphis...good recruiter, but jury's still out as a coach...to me, given a choice, make mine Smart...
