Should a guy really be expected to land big time players at VCU. He's turned guys into big time players. I'd rather have that than a guy who has recruited big time players but has yet to do anything with them. Hell if Ben Howland can recruit to UCLA, Shaka Smart most definitely can.
No doubt about it. Considering his personality, style of play and popularity the last couple of years in the media, I think Smart would be a FANTASTIC recruiter at a big school.
Have friends in the coaching business and believe it or not, some are happier at jobs with less pressure and less responsibility. Maybe that's the case with Smart at VCU.
Perhaps so-these coaches are people, too-he certainly has more latitude to run his program his way in Richmond...still think he'll eventually be lured into the "big-time"-but just have a gut feeling it won't be Westwood-
He just doesn't seem like one of those guys. But apparently he is.
Thought Smart's personality would be huge in LA ... but alas.
I think they'll take a hard look at Jay Wright, too... Guy has alot of charisma and recruits well and is a proven commodity.. He's definately a safe hire, if nothing else..
Wright's stock has fallen off a cliff from what it was a couple years ago.
I can see Smart leaving for a more desirable position. The two that are open right now are either not as great of a job as it used to be or is not desirable at all.
If I'm a top up and comer like Smart or Stevens I wouldn't sniff a perennial middle of the pack power 6 conference team. History shows the coaches who do don't really rise above that type of position. If you're not going to wait for a UK, KU, UNC, etc. you need to find an upper tier team in one of those conferences.
He's had a chance at two top tier of their conferences teams in UCLA and Illinois and a middle of the pack team in Minnesota. That leads me to believe if he ever leaves VCU it will be for a UK, UNC, KU, or Puke. You all get the point.
I also find it hilarious that Minnesota is now targeting Frank Hoiberg and Brad Stevens.
Minny is no better of a job than Iowa St.
They won't get him (Iowa State is his alma mater) but Hoiberg is a great coach IMO.
Oh no, I completely agree. My last post wasn't directed at you either I just quoted you because I felt what I said was related to what you were saying.
Chris pointed out why I think it's laughable that Minnesota would target Fred.
He is a good coach, but like you pointed out he wouldn't make a lateral move from his alma mater. He either stays there or moves up.
Mike Greenberg, who I think is awful, was saying that smart staying at vcu was the biggest thing to happen in college basketball in years!!! Lol. He said it is a statement that an up and coming coach is going to commit to a program and finally not chase money from the big boys. He expects vcu to be on the cusp of a dynasty once he gets more talent there bc his style is so attractive. They got hot and made a run a few years ago, but really?!?
The thing is,
up and coming coaches believe that they can win NT at their current respective school.
Here is the thing...they will wise up when they don't win NT in next 10 years.
That's when some of the big school will offer, and they will take it. Shaka Smart and Brad Stevens, both think they can win at their school, but they are still young.
See you in a decade! There is a difference between being a runner up and being a champion. Their drive to win will drive them to go to another school.
Exactly! Look at Sean miller. He left Xavier, and now he's in the final four at Arizona. Couldn't happen if he stayed at X
Well, I wouldn't quite say Final Four yet. Would you?
I'm sure they will handle Wichita or LaSalle pretty easily. He finally gets to beat Thad Matta and the Bucks too!
Ahhh...the old crystal ball. Are you sure there is no LaSalle vs FGCU in the final?
I would love that honestly lol. I just don't care for Ohio state much.
Don't look like Arizona is going to stop OS,be hard to keep them out of final four which doesn't make me happy!
Yeah, u and me both. I just don't like them at all!! Jeez, the thought of them playing UL is making me sick right now lol
Andy Katz reporting Steve Alford gets the job.
I mentioned his name once, but kind of thought his ship had sailed as far being a coach at a big university. They could have done worse, that's for sure
