Didnt he literally just sign a 10 year extension or something crazy like that? haha. I like our chances to catch UCLA now with this guy running them even further into the ground.
Don't be shocked if he wins guys he's had New Mexico winning and now with the resources he's got he should do well.
Yeah wouldn't be surprised if he does well. Not championships well but occassional final fours maybe.
He had resources in a down big 10 and struggled a ton.
He was winning in a below average conference at the school with the most tradition and resources. I suspect UCLA will be looking for another coach in about 4 or 5 years. Bad hire.
I'm not calling him a bad coach or anything and yes he's won 20 games in the past and all that but if I'm UCLA I don't settle for someone like this. I wasn't a big fan of Howland either but this isn't really a step up in my opinion, more like a step sideways.
Someone said it on another board. It's a different ball game when you have to recruit against the best recruiters.
Now you are going against Cal, Self, K, Williams, Izzo, Pastner, and Miller. Unless you hire a coach who can steal some recruit from these guys it will be hard to perform any better than mid major.
You aren't going to be farther with same type of recruits. You have to get better talent and athletes.
So, UCLA fires a coach for losing in the second round of NCAA's
Then they hire a coach who lost in the first round, to the IVY LEAGUE!
You call coaching at Iowa having resources. I don't know about that. I'd agree though that its not a great hire. Still I wouldn't be surprised if he has some good years. Like you though I'm not sure if that will be enough to keep his job.
For $10 million guaranteed annually, tickets to the Oscars, two restaurants in Malibu, and a movie career upon retirement, Coach Cal would have to think about it. They are also thinking about adding 1,000 scholarships to give to anyone of his choice each year for the next 30 years. But I believe Coach will say no. Who wants to live followed everywhere by one million people who hate you? (the other million will be ambivalent).
Did not see that coming. Guess they could have done worse but seriously, who else was in the running? Romar from Washington, nah. Heck, how bad could it be if the boosters were wanting Mark Gottfried.
Just don't understand this hire at all really. What it tells me is that the UCLA job certainly isn't what it used to be.
