I think we can all agree with that sentiment. And I (i can only speak for myself personally) did not mean to suggest Joker sucks or anything similar... just that in my opinion the Roark at QB experiment was not creative game planning as much as it was necessity. Nothing more, nothing less.
That QB was good enough to beat the almighty fighting James Franklin's the week before...
Enough of this bullshit...you can beat down the team when they lose, but taking credit away from a win isnt being a fan at all.
That game was great to be at...and it was a helluva gameplan executed to perfection.
Might want to go watch a replay of the first snap in the entire Joker Phillips era. You know, that deep play action pass to King on the road against Louisville.
Who, exactly, was he going to play at quarterback over Newton the first month of the season? Maxwell Smith was a true freshman with no experience whatsoever and was pretty awful in his two early relief appearances against LSU and South Carolina. (And don't say Mossakowski. He was a great kid but he was never going to be healthy enough to play in the SEC.)
Kentucky wasn't winning eight games under any circumstances last season.
Matt, I know y'all don't get as much access as you'd like to the team, and go largely off what the coaches say (and rightfully so). That said, was there any indicator that Morgan Newton's play would be so sub-par last year? I would be interested in your opinion on why the expectations were so high in the first place (aside from his star ranking of course) and also why he fell so far below them. I'll be the first to support him if he gets the nod again this year, although I don't see that happening, but my expectations will be a lot more tempered... last year I thought we had another Andre on our hands. Maybe that was just me, though.
Facts don't matter to this guy... When we have the talent on the outside our offense is as explosive as any in the country.
It's been my experience that the same people who downplay the UT win are the same people who said we were going to get our asses kicked by them....
I can't speak to the star rankings, but I do think they truly thought Newton would be much improved based on what he was doing in training camp. But training camp isn't a game and Newton couldn't carry over that improved play. I don't think they thought he was going to be All-SEC or anything but they believed he would be a competent QB in what they were asking him to do. But then he goes out and plays one of the worst games I've seen from a QB against Western (for a variety of reasons, most his own, but also because of an injury-riddled offensive line and ineffective receivers), which appeared to destroy whatever confidence he had built up over the summer and in training camp. Once that boulder gets rolling downhill it's difficult to stop, and even more so when you're scared to death you're going to get hit on every play. It was a really bad combination of a lot of factors hitting at one time.
But to answer the overall question yeah, he had performed well enough in camp for them to think things were going to be solid at that position. It obviously didn't work out that way.
No offense... but you have it backwards. Regardless of what "last years" disappointing reality was, the reality NOW (this year) is... JOKER IS STILL OUR COACH!!!
Those who can't accept "THAT", can't accept reality.
What's done is done for this year... it is what it is. Some of us are capable of accepting what is reality at the moment... and regardless of what we would prefer or what we think about Joker, the fact is... it's about time to kick off the season. Now it's simple... we can opt to get behind Joker and the team by showing our support "OR" we can opt to go on whining about how terrible LAST YEAR was, not show any support and just stay home. Me... I choose to rally behind the team, show some damn support and get excited. It just sounds like a lot more fun to me for some odd reason... call me crazy.

Hey, now there's something we can agree on... Joker is the coach and we as fans need to be behind him and the team 100%. I'm hoping like hell he works out; nobody wants to be here more than him, and nobody wants success for UK more than him. If he gets something positive started, we could see some significant, sustained progress with our football program... the likes of which I have never seen and have wanted for a LONG time.
I just take exception to the notion that if you criticize Joker (or the players or Mitch or whomever) you're a bad fan. There has been plenty to criticize and plenty to praise, and to make an accurate assessment we need to do both. I absolutely love UK football... I fly up from New Orleans at least 2-3 times a year just to watch/tailgate. But given the atmosphere on these boards lately, I can see why you would be quick to jump on any perceived negativity... hell, I fell victim to it in this thread by jumping on you. We really need to get back to the environment of open, thoughtful discussion without the threat of being labeled as a bad fan or unrealistically optimistic, etc. At the end of the day, we all post on this site because we love our CATS.
Maybe my expectations were too high then... I hadn't been that disappointed in the play of a particular player in a long time... especially after a win. There was definitely more to it then Morgan though, I agree on that. Regardless of who lines up behind center this year though, even if it is Morgan again, I think we are gonna see a significantly improved offense... if for no other reason than we don't have anywhere to go but up!
Thats pretty good synopsis of what happened to Newton last year. Nothing but pure bad luck for the coaching staff. No one could have predicted the kind of scenario that would see a 4* QB not able to do anything in the passing game.
I'm not implying that at all... or not trying to. However, it was more acceptable and easier to tolerate last season and at season's end... and even during the off-season while some were making their cases for potential HC's and trying to sway Mitch's future decisions. That's all behind us now... at least for another season. Don't get me wrong, there may, damn well, come another time (in the near future) when we ALL wanna bash the hell out of Joker again, but for the love of God, Country, the Kentucky Wildcats and all that is good... NOW IS NOT THE TIME PEOPLE!!!
Last year the perfect shit storm hit Joker and this team. His RB's got hurt, his OLine was hurt, his QB lost his mind, and the receivers flat out sucked at certain points. Now some are gonna say "shouldnt we of had replacements for them?" Thing is you only have a certain amount of replacements. There is a reason they are called backups...Throw in lackluster recruiting for a couple years and you end up with no depth and decent talent. When the decent talent goes down you are left with no depth. I remember several days in camps where it was very windy and Morgan would hit a throw and then miss a throw. Most thought it was the wind and he would settle down. Turned out it was him far more than the wind. I also reports coming in that he looked pretty good especially on deep balls. Well if you dont have the time to throw its hard to throw it deep. I suppose this sounds like a paragraph of excuses but its not. Things happen and life moves on. I understand though that if you run out of ammo its hard to win a firefight. I am all in with this team win, lose or draw. When I say I bleed blue I mean it. There is no bullshit bandwagon nonsense here. If we lose I get pissed as much if not more than most. I literally scream at the tv in rages. I will support Joker if he is our coach. I will support barney the freakin dinosaur if he is our coach. Once they take that blue off though they are the enemy. I dont root for SEC teams to win. I curse them because they are not us. They are not a part of my nation. The BIG BLUE NATION. I AM A WILDCAT. WE ARE UK!!! Praise to God and Arrows to our enemies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS GET THIS SHIT STARTED ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It smells like microwaved homeless people in here.
here's the interesting thing. I don't give Joker much credit for being "creative" during the tennessee game. They ran about 5 different plays the entire game.
What I give joker credit for in that game is
A. His game management. To win a game that low scoring takes PERFECT in game coaching, adjustments, clock management, field position management etc...
B. His motiviational abilities. Bottom line is this. Most teams would have said, "well fu&$, we've got a damn receiver about to play qb. We don't have a shot in hell". Instead Joker was able to get the guys to play their tails off with a TON of adversity facing them.
C. There is NO doubt that by the end of the season our defense was starting to click. Two things here. 1. We had a TON of young guys on the field the last two games and I think there is a STRONG case that those guys were exponentionally better than the older guys they replaced and 2. Our guys were starting to understand our scheme. Our run defense was damn good. I expect a jump out of our pass defense now that the miserable Steve Brown is gone.
As far as the entire season went. As I said before. It was a VERY tough set of circumstances. A. Morgan Newton Flopped. I admit that I thought he'd be good. I was clearly wrong as were a lot of other people. B. Our o-line issues were major when we had the injuries. THat compounded the morgan newton issue. C. The defensive change took a lot of time to adjust to. We went from a very basic scheme under brown that was a lot of read and react and almost exclusively man to man to a more complicated and attacking scheme that included a nice mix of coverages. We also HAD to have had some personality issues on the staff with Brown being demoted. Thank brooks for that.

The bottom line is we beat UT for the first time in decades to end the season, and we need to use that momentum to continue into the U of L game. Don't forget, that "awful" UT team crushed Cincinnati by over 3TD's and hung 40 on them. The same Cincinnati team that BEAT U of L last year. Let's just go into the season fully behind this young Kentucky team, and believing that we can beat a totally over-hyped Louisville team. U of L thinks they are going to crush us, so we do have some level of ability to surprise them. If we come out and hit them in the mouth early, they could have a bit of a melt down.
I'm ready to keep our 1-game winning streak going!
Absofreakinlutely. Gotta take that momentum and turn it loose on the Cards. We absolutely have to come out ready to prove something in that game. Prove to every prospect in this state that we own this state.
Joker won the game against Tennessee. End of story. Anyone who does not want to give him the credit is foolish IMHO. Who would have been blamed if UK had lost?
The meanest dog in Taiwan.
Yep exactly. He can't take all the blame when we lose and not get full credit when we win. Pretty simple.
i don't agree with the posts where you think fans only get happy for 6 wins, but lately you've been spot on.
I just want the UK fans to have higher expectations than 6 wins year in and year out. I want the other SEC teams to know they have to play their best to beat UK. I want Joker to be the first coach in
years to have a winning SEC record against other SEC teams. I think being a SEC team having those things should be expected. UK should never go 20-30 years without beating any team on their schedule so yes, I have high expectations for Joker and think this year plus 2 more to see if the CIW experiment works.
If it doesn't then I do not want to read on here were Joker never had his chance. Isn't that a fair deal?
Wanting and reality are two different things. UK Football has a ceiling within the competitive paradigm it finds itself in: 7 wins and a low to mid tier Bowl Game. That's it. I want a threeway with Kate Upton and Beyonce but the reality is that ain't going to happen. My ceiling are solid 7's and maybe getting her friend liquored up enough to give it a go but I digress.
I just disagree 110%. If 7 wins is the goal then what is the point of it all. I am sure Joker is not tellling kids he recruits that 7 wins is the goal at UK year in and year out.
The reality is what you make it at UK as at all the other SEC schools. Give Joker a 2 million recruiting budget instead of building a baseball stadium and see the changes.
And from what I have been told, Beyonce is up for it but the problem is kate.
My ceiling is straight 10's on a scale from 1-100.
