I was thinking which of the current basketball players are the best candidates to return to the team next year and what their roles might be. First, I think Wiltjer will definately return for his junior year. He simply is too much of a defensive liability and isnt consistant enough with his 3 pt shot to be drafted at all at the next NBA draft. He could veery well come off the bench in 2013-14 depending on who else Cal get sign in the spring. WCS also could return although I have said in the past he would declare for the draft. If he returns he could be an important piece towards winning the NC next year. I feel certain Harrow will either be back or transfer next year because we all know who will be the starting PG next season. The 3 that will go I believe are Goodwin,Noel and Poythress if Poythress gets that fire in his belly before the end of this season. WCS and Wiltjer will make KY very deep and with the class coming in well WOW.
it is nearly impossible to speculate these things at this point in the year. Who had Orton as a first rounder at this point in the year a couple of years ago? I have no idea who will be back next year, but with the 5 signed players coming in it will be a good team. And if Cal adds a player or 2 and keeps a player or 2 off next year's team it will be great.
I agree 100%.. Poythress, Noel and Goodwin will be the 3 that leave.. Of course, Mayes, as well, as he's a sr.. Wiltjer, Harrow and Cauley-Stein will all return unless there games really signifigantly improve over the next couple of months..I do think WCS would get drafted this year, on potential alone(ala Orton), but, it would definately serve him well to return 1 more year. He could go from a low 1st to mid 2nd rounder to a Top 10-15 pick and guaranteed money with another year.. If these 3 do return, I could care less if we add another recruit to this upcoming class.. We'll be loaded regardless:
If WCS will be drafted, Cal will usher him out the door. Although looking at that list, he might actually keep him around because we have a dearth of height talent (unless we get Randle).

Randle is 6'8 and not a true post player...Marcus Lee is 6'9 and very thin..These guys would have tough matchup problems with guys like Plumlee, and some of those bigs on Arizona and Mich St..We need a true center that can bang and also command attention when on offense..Would love to see Willie stay..Then Lee could come along at a nice pace with not too much pressure on him..
Cal has never ushered anyone out the door that wasn't ready to walk out the door. Ready as in he really wanted to leave even though he may be 2nd round type thing. Cal has always had a few hold overs in his classes at Memphis. We were just on an unprecedented roll as far as players going into the draft.
He didn't usher Jones out the door when he was ready after his freshman season. Why? Because Jones heart was still here and he didn't want to Leave. Same with Lamb.
I think you'd have seen Teague, Lamb and maybe Jones stick around for this season had we not won it all. When you win a National Championship your draft stock will never be any higher. Because the next year the guys around you maybe aren't as good as the guys you played with. Maybe your open shots go down and your shooting percentage suffers, maybe passes that were assists are turnovers because the guy your passing to hasn't learned the system yet.
I think we see a few of these guys back next season. I'd say right now the only guy worthy of drafting on potential would be Noel. I say that because of what Davis is able to do in the NBA right now and fair or not there will be some GM that thinks he can become that type of guy. Everybody else is a dime a dozen in the NBA.
having said that nbadraft.net has 4 UK guys listed in the top 14 again(Noel-2, Goodwin-8, Poythress-12 and WCS-14) so if those 4 stay in the lottery they may be gone and not risk their stock falling with splitting time better / just as good players coming in or not developing a better game.
I don't see Wiltjer ever playing the NBA. He will be a 4 year player at UK and then go overseas.
I really am sorry to say this but I agree completely. Wiltjer is a huge liability on defense and he is a streaky shooter. He doesnt rebound the ball very well and lets face it he is lacking foot speed. I love the kid and hope he makes an NBA team but I think that is wishful thinking on my part.
I think we have a legit chance at Dakari Johnson a true back the the basket center. He is a throwback center and would be a huge asset at KY. Randle does like to play outside in but he has a lot of power in that 6'8 or 6'9 body and wouldnt have a problem matching up with 1 of the Plumlees IMO. If we do get Johnson Cal can field a team that will be dificult to be and add a couple of players that return from this years teams(Wiltjer, maybe WCS) then the 2013-14 team will have a chance to go down in history as 1 of the best ever. Now Im not forgetting Wiggins but Im not totally convinced that UK is the lock that a lot of people think.

J ust an interesting tidbit. They are planning a start of the basketball season extravaganza at the Cowboys Stadium in 2014. They are going to have 4 b-ball games featuring 8 of the top teams in the country but the twist is that they will all be going on at the same time. They will be played side by side in the stadium starting 15 minutes apart. Mich. St. is the 1st to confirm they will play and several other teams have expressed interest but the article didnt say if the Cats are going to be invited or if they are interested. I think it will be really cool
Not a fan of that idea.
Back to main topic
Wiltjer will be back, at this point he doesn't look like he can play professionally. HOWEVER, if he puts all the pieces of his capability, he does have the ability to be in NBA (given a chance at least). The problem is that he can't seem to put all of them together. When his shooting is hot, he can't rebound or defend. When his rebounding is okay and defense is okay, his shooting is terrible.
Chances of any of the freshmen staying is actually pretty slim. People like to use WCS because he is the lowest ranked player coming in and the rawest of the group. However, if he continue to improve through out the season, he might end up being one of the lottery picks.
NBA draft has WCS as lottery pick
Chad Ford has WCS as a later 1st rounder

WCS would be the best player for us to return.
His role would be to dominate the interior like it's never been before.
Use his length, speed, strength, and size to destroy opposition.

I agree completely. WCS could declare and and be drafted in the 1st round regardless of position in the round. I think he would be a very important part in KYs run for a 40-0 record, and maybe I am being a little too optimistic in that, but if Cal signs 1 or 2 of the huys still on his list for 2013 then I just cant see how 40-0 would be out of the realm of possibility. The Cats will have the perfect prototypical pair of guards in the twins and will have Lee as a low post defender and is athletic then Young will provide the deep perimeter shooting with consistency that this years team needs so desperately. Then if we should get Wiggins and/or D. Johnson then the perfect storm will be hovering over Lexington next year.
Almost always I side with a player leaving if they are in the 1st round but if WCS is in the mid to late 1st or even late lottery he should come back and I would hope Cal would give him that advice. Not only could he drastically improve his stock with another year. He needs to get better to have long term staying power in the NBA. Just won't feel right to me if he comes out this year.
From what I have been told he wanted to come to UK and use his FR year to be a best for his Soph yr. He wants to be ready for the NBA and not be a project. However if they the NBA say you are a top 5 pick he will go.
Wilt will be back, plus I do think if UK does not make a great run in the tourney a couple more will be back.
