Watched Around the Horn yesterday and Paige said he didn't think that Calipari is a top-20 coach and of all the coaches to have won a national championship at UK, he would maybe be ranked 4th or 5th.
Woody Woody Woody wants some attention. Now that Calipari has won he has to think of some other way to get at Cal. Well Cal is a top 20 coach and doesn't need Woody to tell him. I don't know where he ranks with Rupp, Hall, Pitino, Smith but in 3 years he has done really well. Let's see how he does in the next 4 years. The bottom line is that he now is a National Champion Coach just like the other four!!! And he was made for this job! Sit back and enjoy #8!
And the objective criteria he is using is what exactly. Certainly isn't wins, winning %, Titles, NCAA performance, recruiting and dominating college basketball like few others in a 7 year period. I guess if you just don't like him just because is good enough for Woody.
Woody Paige has strong Vandy connections I believe. Enough said.
Woody Paige is irrelevant is every sense of the word. He just likes to stir things up without much fact to back it up. He, like the majority of that show he is on, is a joke. Calipari is a top 10 National Champion Coach without a doubt. I think if his recruiting and coaching continues he could be top 2.
Chris sorry, didn't realize you had the same topic started.
It's kind of funny his comment. Ranks 4th or 5th at UK coaches.
Well UK usually hires only top notch coaches so, being 4th and 5th at UK is very prestigious.
Second, Rupp is 1. Cal is pushing for #2 at UK depending on next few years. I see him potentially challenging Rupp if he stays here long enough. (I think he won't stay that long, i am talking about 10-15 years.)
His winning record past 3 years at UK is number 1 in the country. Ahead of Coach K, Self, Williams, and everyone else.
I could see UK winning national title in 2 years, they will be favorites that year. They are kind of favorites next year (I think however, winning with 6 freshmen will be somewhat shocking.)
Too many analyst make too much absolute comments too often. 1st take with those 2 morons, don't even want to say their names, made HORRIBLE comments yesterday. I was shaking my head, everything they said can be said about every other top coaches, one even said coach cal has under achieved with more than anyone else. (Even so, he is the winningest coach past 3 years at UK)
BTW, Coach Cal NCAA tourney record is 13-2 at UK. That's insane.
Woody can't name but about 5 coaches in history. Not sure how the hell he has some list of the top 20. Guys burnt out.
It is not a stretch at all to rank him forth or fifth best coach at Kentucky. Certainly Rupp is the best but I've always had Joe B second and Cal hasn't done enough to top Pitino yet. That puts him forth.
What's everyone's top 20 college coaches of all time?
Woody is a "Native of Memphis"...nuff said!!

I don't have a ton of problem if he is saying:
Top 20 of all-time
If it is top 20 active coaches, then it's ridiculous.
ESPN has a deep stable of fools right now. Thing is, I don't even think some of them believe half they say. They've become pseudo-celebrities and they throw stuff out there for reaction.
Being 4th on an all-time coaching list at UK is no slouch, even if you believe that's where Cal belongs. This is now a school with FIVE different coaches winning it all. Amazing. Some could even argue the only guy who didn't win a title in the last 50+ years is one of the best coaches of all time.

I'd put Cal behind Rupp and Pitino (gag) at this point but ahead of Hall. Hall was fairly un-popular at several points while coaching at UK and was quite foolish in the way he handled the UofL situation. Joe B. has been much more well liked in his retired time than when he actually coached.
If cal gets one more final four or one more title he easily moves into second place.
Someone older than will have to answer this because I wasn't born until '83, but I was always under the impression that even though he won a championship, that Joe B. is generally viewed as underachieving during his time at UK.
Anyone have any thoughts on that?
Joe B followed the Legend so, he was viewed as underachieving simply because he was not Rupp. To me he seemed a lot like Billy D. He was an ace recruiter, but never got all of that talent to show most of the time.
As much as I hate the word, I will have to say Paige is retarded.
"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." ~ Emerson
Hall was loathed! Don't let folks try to change history on you. He was treated in some regards even worse than Tubby was especially during the 80's. To be totally fair he did bring it some on himself but I've always compared him to Boeheim: Got a title and a couple of Final Four's but really underachieved with some of the talent he had. He just decided to quit instead of hanging around like Boeheim has to pad his win total.
Woody Paige is on the same level with Skip Bayless both are completely irrelevant, so they have to say ridiculous things just to get noticed.
Joe B. was very good, just had the impossible task of following Rupp. His coaching job in 1975 was spectacular. He has the title in 1978 and he should have been in back-to-back Final Fours in 1983 and 1984. His final season, 1985, was also a really nice job with a team that did not have a heckuva lot of support for Kenny Walker.
Unfortunately, you also had the 1981 and 1982 NCAA flame-outs to UAB and MTSU that probably cast a bit of debate on his overall record.
I love Woody. If he means 20 all time he's correct. His coaching decision at Memphis to not foul cost them a championship. Basically stopping our offense in the 2nd half almost cost him one at UK. Greatest recruiter of all time. One of the top 2 or 3 managers of talent and ego of all time. x's and o's not sure he's even top 50 or 100 of all time. If he's talking x's and o's I wouldn't put Cal in my top 20 even of active coaches.
Hall-amazing to me how under appreciated even by UK fans. Tell me any other coach has replaced a legend and posted a stelar record for 13 years. Not to mention all the talent Hall brought in as an assistant.
Cal-took an NIT team and has dominated for 3 straight years.
Pitino-took team from probation and was amazing but not the recruiter that Cal is or as good with the fans
Tubby-should still be in the HOF
Sutton-What could have been
BCG- what never should have been.
You don't make four Final Fours without being one of the Top 20 coaches IMHO. How many guys can say that? And three at different schools. Only he Pitino can claim that, right?
Who would you list on your Top 20? Maybe going through that exercise may reveal a higher spot for Cal than you originally thought.
I think his superior recruiting of superior talent covers up a lot of his coaching skill. Let's not also forget the '10 team he allowed to chuck up brick after brick instead of pumping it inside to Cuz against WVU. Everyone watching was screaming to get it down low and stop shooting 3's. That bad call might have very well cost us the ship in 10. And you might be right about maybe Cal being higher if I actually sat down to pick my top 20. Off the top of my head better x's and o's coaches than Cal: Izzo, Self, Pitino, Roy, K, Matta, Tubby, Crean, Ryan, Donovan, Boeheim, Barnes, Martin, Huggins, Calhoun, Wright, Fischer, and I'm sure there's more. That's 17 though. Pretty close to 20 and that's just off the top of my head.
