Could be Noel drama on the horizon

  • Seems we may not be in the clear with him yet, NCAA investigating further.

  • Link was jacked up. Here's the working link:

Thamel's first story at Sports Illustrated focusing on Kentucky. Surprise surprise.

NCAA expanding inquiry into top Kentucky recruit Nerlens Noel - NCAA Basketball - SI.com

The NCAA has expanded its inquiry into Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel, one of the nation's top recruits in the class of 2012, as two NCAA enforcement officials traveled to Noel's New Hampshire prep school for a three-hour meeting in early August. The NCAA's questions focused on the cast of characters that surrounded Noel's recruitment and how Noel paid for his unofficial visits, according to a person with knowledge of the NCAA inquiry.

Yeah I was trying to fix it, thanks. Admittedly this is news since Noel was #1 ranked player in High School and likely lottery pick next year, but can't believe SI and Thamel would focus on this instead of UNC scandal that could legitimately rock the foundation of college basketball.

  • Well hopefully everything will turn out fine. I am glad that Sandy went with the NCAA to the meeting. If there is one organization that no one really trusts anymore it is the NCAA. I think Cal and UK are still shocked/miffed about the Kanter situation and how the NCAA went about investigating that. At least this way UK will know everything going on in the process.

So what... in the end, will it matter?

No offense, but we all know how crooked the NCAA is... they can careless what UK knows. They will dream up some BS explanation in their pathetic attempt to justify another "unjustifiable" ruling.

Kinda like the "less than" honorable Justice John Roberts did... just sayin'. shrug

Agree that it's good to have Sandy there. Also agree big time in not trusting the NCAA on what kind of ruling they'll ultimately make on this. Will they decide they have enough info to feel confident his recruitment wasn't tampered with? Will they decide he can't play this season? Will they let him play and then retroactively declare him inelegible and vacate our season? There's no set of guidelines we can look at to make an educated guess becaus they simpley are not consistent. Corey Magette took money from an agent but Duke never punished. Marcus Camby takes money UMASS vacated. UNC basketball has had players take fraudulent college classes in the last decade and they aren't doing shit about it. Derrick Rose won't cooperate with their investigation so they vacate Memphis's 2008 season with NO PROOF he cheated on his SAT. We are at the mercy of a machine that operates with bias and no real set of guidelines on how they dictate college basketball and it really, really, sucks.

  • And, last week people were wondering how the vaunted NCAA could deflect attention from UNC's woes.....

  • Chris or matt or anyone have any info on whether we should be worried...is the NCAA just digging or is there something to find here?...no Noel would be worse then no kanter

  • Thamel needs psychological help. But I actually find myself disliking the reporters that stick up for him more than I dislike Thamel himself. Honor among thieves I guess.

  • Didn't some NCAA officials go to meet with Anthony Davis's school or MKG's school last year? Seems like I've heard this before.

  • This is likely going to be an every year occurance as long as Cal is at UK. And by that I don't mean to infer an anti-Calipari conspiracy with the NCAA but, rather, that the NCAA looks into a handful of top recruits every year for this same thing. With Cal signing a handful of top recruits every year there is a good likelihood that one or more of those recruits will fall under similar scrutiny.

But until the NCAA starts imposing something more than a slap on the wrist in cases like this it is much ado about nothing (unless someone connected to UK pays for a recruit's visit).
