DT depth for 2012?

  • With Laughlin now out the door and Crawford & McDermott both being Sr's DT depth for 2012 will be a huge concern.

So my question is do we sign a couple Juco DT's for depth in 2012? I see no way around it unless we are going play true freshman.

    2012 DT's

    Cobble
    Rumph
    Washington - DE/DT
Love - If he stays at DT.

And that's about it. We need some DT's other than fresh off the boat freshman.

  • As much as I hate to disrupt our O-line and the experience they have logged, I say move Chandler Burden to defensive tackle for next season and give Tevon Eatmon-Nared a whole lot of reps at offensive left tackle.

Chandler played on the d-line his freshman season.

  • Wouldn't shock me at all to see Turner work the juco route to get a DT for this class and maybe another one next class. I don't think we should bring in two in the same recruiting class though.

I really don't like the idea but something must be done? But on the other hand some schools have made a living recruiting Juco DL. MSU & Utah seem to have a some luck hitting the Juco ranks.

  • The MS JUCO ranks are LOADED, especially with big, mean, nasty D-linemen.

Burden won't be at UK in 2012.

He better. The lack of DL (and OL to a lesser extent) over the past 2-3 classes is inexcusable.

  • JUCO is our only option. Get some mid-year guys in here, apply them to this year's class if we can and go.

  • Expect UK to hit the juco ranks for DT help in 2012. There is no other option, IMO.

I've thought they would do it the last two years, especially after Turner was hired, but alas...

(If you can't tell, I think this dearth of DTs was completely foreseeable, and avoidable).

I agree. DT is the one position UK simply can't recruit.

As well as a lot of other teams. Someone in the know on here has said it is one of the toughest position to recruit.

Most of the times the good ones, end up with the top teams. The rest, get the "average" guy. Most have to be coached "up".

  • Did I miss something, is Laughlin out for 2012. Surely if grades are the problem he can be eligible in the spring of 2012.

That's me. DT is the hardest position to recruit by a wide margin. Very, very difficult to project. And, the powers gobble up the sure-fire prospects. Very frustrating!!

  • 2012 DT's:

    Cobble Jr
    Rumph Jr
    Laughlin So?
    Johnson Jr
    Love RS-Fr
Coleman RS-Fr (many feel he's more suited to DT)
    Washington RS-Fr
    Chapman Fr (if he signs)
    Graffree Fr (if he signs)

The cupboard is not exactly bare. With veteran and deep DE's, a ton of great looking LB's, we may very well be looking at a stronger front 7 than what we'll see this Fall.....or at least about the same level of performance. My only worry is that Rumph, Cobble, and Laughlin remain in academic trouble.

I don't see the need to rush the Juco ranks, but I would not be shocked either. I also wouldn't be shocked to see a DE or two balloon up and move inside.

I do feel that UK needs to take 2-3 potential DT's in every class though.

My main concerns in 2012 is the rebuilding of the o-line. There will be depth, but young and lesser experienced. Also the secondary gets demolished. CB is one of those positions where a raw athlete can make a decent impact w/o a bunch of playing experience, but to lose both starting CB's and the majority of the Safeties........ouch! Often it is easier to replace one or two players than it is to replace an entire sector......ie it is easier to replace a starting OT, RB, and WR than it is to replace 3 starting o-linemen. In 2012 we lose (potentially) nearly the entire o-line and nearly the entire secondary.
