Dear Coach Taggert

  • You're excited to finally beat an SEC team. I don't blame you.

The (multi) million dollar question though: do you want to COACH an SEC team? I know a school that is hiring, and you don't even need to go far...

    Sincerely,

    A finally realistic fan

  • He's not who we need. They need to go throw the money at a big time coach and there is only one that would even think of coming here and his name is Petrino. Then after he leaves maybe we can attract someone else who would be a solid hire.

  • Taggart is a good to great coach. But I agree with Nate. He's not who we need.

    Keep Calm & Stoops On..

  • Petrino is a total waste of time. How can you say that a coach who has an entire program believing in themselves against ANYONE two years removed from going 1-11 isn't "who we need" is beyond me. I respect you greatly as a poster from all the way back in the KI days, Nate--so nothing personal, but a retread isn't the answer. I'm tired of seeing coaches build shit programs into contenders and passing us. We have everything going for us (LOD types who hate MB, don't even post, we are a high $ SEC program, nuff said).

Somebody go hire me a bright young coach who can actually find his ass with both hands. CJP and Sanders and Minter obviously aint cutting the mustard.

It is. But I refuse to accept it is his "destination job"

But the lowest SEC program would be?

  • I have been saying for three years Joker had to be given a shot. He had it failed now it is time to move on. If we are ever going to compete we need a big name coach. Now is the time, or we continue with streaks of 500 teams and crap bowl appearances if we are lucky.

Not his destination, but his opportunity to play on a more national stage and on TV every week. Same pitch we give recruits: "yeah you'll get your ass beat, but you'll be on ESPN while it happens! " I think Taggert could take our young talent (it IS there) plus his recruits and make us at least a bowl eligible SEC East-contending-non-doormat for 3-5 years.

    BigBlueNation 7

  • Call me crazy but I think Taggart could get it done but I agree I don't think he's the answer, I don't even think he would come here because bigger schools will come calling. Hell, one could say they were out recruiting us before this game, wonder how recruiting will go now... This weak game plan will not work against the SEC or any power running team, it's a shame that WKU has better OT's/defense than we do... Yes we have some good young talent but to be honest I don't think Joker and Rock can develop em. I have no confidence in this staff what so ever... We will be lucky to win 3 games this year. I'm so F'n tired of being everyones highlight team... This SUCKS!!! I hope Joker gets fired tonight... If Neloms just makes that tackle we probably win... If Bud doesn't get that penalty (which shouldn't have been) or stays at home vs that throw back we win... Backside contain has to stay home thinking counter, bootleg, reverse... This team lacks discipline and has pathetic fundamentals... Sorry for ranting but I bet I'm not the only one...

No offense taken, but honestly I don't see many "big named" coaches or promising up and comers coming to UK. Unless that up and comer is a coordinator or a coach at Appalachia St. Petrino may not be the answer, but at the moment he's the only guy I see that might take a chance at coming to UK.

I'd rather go 2-10 for 7 straight years than let Petrino walk across the field in Lexington ...

    Winning changes a lot.

As for Cal, I always liked him despite his "rep" so I always wanted him. Petrino I think is slum, but he would find a way to win here. There is no doubt in that.

when you are the fattest ugliest guy at the bar you sure can't have very high standards of what woman will go home with you at the end of the night. Petrino to UK makes perfect sense to everyone in this country outside of mysteriously high-moral fans, some local media, and of course our AD.

Thank you for being the blunt one.

Honestly, why would any up and comer or big name coach come to UK? Honestly give me a good reason. Besides the Brooks years and a couple of Mumme years we've been terrible. Ever since I can remember and my memories begin in the Curry days. I'd consistently spend my birthdays watching UK get destroyed as a kid. Why do we think a few years of middle of the pack with Brooks and then three years of suck afterwards changes anything?

The best coach available that MIGHT take a chance at UK is one Bobby Petrino.

  • Taggert might make a good UK hire 5-8 years from now, but he has a lot more to prove before he takes the reigns of a broken SEC program. It's gonna take a big name, big time coach if there is any hope recovering from the last 3 years.

  • I mean it this time...I'd prefer to go 2-10 for seven years. biggrin

    jamccain

  • If Taggert is truly worth having, he will beyond UK's level in 5-8 years,

I don't think it will be an easy search by any means, but I think there are some fine coaches out there that will consider UK this time around.

After the sanctions hit and Morriss left, there were no viable candidates once Jerry Jones called the Tuna. Barnhart made the right call with Rich Brooks and brought some semblence of credibility back to the programs. When CRB was ready to hang'em up, he gambled wth Joker. It was a reasonable gamble. Joker was a well-liked personable young coach who offer continuity and was also as much a "UK man" as there was. If he was successful, he would probable stablize the position for 20 years or more. Unfortunately, that has not worked out.

Now UK needs a true coaching search to find the right man. Despite those that say UK won't pay what it takes, I'm sure that if it will bring the right guy in, UK will pay top dollar if that's what it takes. Joker wasn't hired because he was cheap. He was hired because of what he offered if he was suceesful. He was paid what he was paid because he had never been a HC and didn't command top dollar.

While I say I believe that UK will pay top dollar if necessary, in the end I don't think it will be. I don't think UK will draw the kind of experienced, successful headman that will command $3-5M per season. IMO, unless Mitch can work a miracle, UK will end up with a young up-and-coming mid-major HC, a top big school coordinator or an NFL assistant. I think UK will pay what it takes to land them and top assistants, but it will be less than a Saban or Meyer commands.

    bluedynasty

  • Why wouldn't UK pay what it takes?

It's just a business decision...pay $3M and you make a nice return by winning games and all that comes from it...gamble and pay $1M and you increase you odds of not making a return or losing money.

People who can't see UK will pay money aren't seeing this...it's just business.

    jamccain

  • Name 1 coach, besides Petrino, that is a "big name" coach. THERE ISN'T ONE THAT WILL COME HERE. THIS ISN'T BASKETBALL.

    trueUKgamer

  • We all have different versions of "big name"....I don't think a "big name" is really the answer...mostly because they all have jobs and won't lose them because they don't suck.

Might be nice to hire a nice young coach with some credibility and ability though.

That's funny, kind of what we did with Joker. Many programs wanted Joker when he was OC for their HC. Oh well

    trueUKgamer

  • Don't think he's who we need but that doesn't mean to take anything away from him as a coach. WKU has a pretty good one and I hope he stays there and continues to build a team that can compete with the big boys. UK needs a guy that has proven he can build an SEC level defense.
