Defense moving forward

A lot has changed on Rick Minter’s clipboard since the last time he used it in Commonwealth Stadium. The spring game Saturday gave him and his staff reason to be hopeful.

  • Thanks James, I was there and another guy I think will be playing alot at Rush-End this fall in packages is T Paschal. He's very quick and very lean at 245#. I love his potential. I really think we should see alot more hurries on the qb this year. That's something that has been missing for a long time. Miles SImpson also played well, I think he's already better at the Point of attack than Winston, i'm not saying he's the type that can chase down SEC RB's that have a 10 yard lead like Guy done against Ole Miss's Bolden but Miles is a kid that can be a solid player for us.

If we can get another 10# on Malcom or Minter moves Brause or Simpson to "Will" we should be ok. I also loved the play of Josh Forrest. He's going to be very good and man he's huge. To me he looked 6'4-6'5 today, and easily 230#... That's the perfect size for our Strong side hybrid. This front 7 has some good depth, if our db's catch up namely corners we should be ok... Our starting defensive unit is starting to come along, I think we are going to need some big time help on the Off-line and WR though, because from the way it's looking Marco is our best playmaker and a 155# WR will never hold up as a every down player, if you can't run a slant route or block 200# deffenders than your not a complete WR. None of our Rb's really shined today either but most of that could have been due to the fact that there wasn't much power-running plays called. I think we need Clemons healthy, if he can't be 100% by this fall none of the other guys scare d's the way he does.

  • I only listened to the game, but there was one thing that stood out that I was concerned about. A week ago, Joker said the one thing he's confident in about this D is they will be able to stop the run. However, didn't the first team D do pretty poorly against the run today? Can anyone who was there give me some more details about how and why that happened. Was russel's long td run jist a fluke because he couldn't be tackled, or did the D just get gashed?

  • Thanks James.

Russell is a good runner and I wouldn't be surprised to see him used in the Wildcat package. I still think long term his best position is as a TE, FB, or LB.

  • I was there and thought the first team D looked good. Also keep in mind that King didn't play last night, and he is our #1 WR. Really hoping Clemons is healthy to play this Fall. We need his style of running. Also, I thought that Dupree made several big plays/tackles that they credited to another player. Don't look at the box score to determine his value and potential. He was on the big plays last night and has a great motor. Overall I was happy with what I saw. Offense looked MUCH improved from last year and Defense that was aggressive and fast.

They gave up a couple of big runs early. Two to George and the long TD by Russell. After that they really settled down. The only person that was able to do some damage against the 1st team D was Kendrick. That is where we missed Danny. Kendrick played great and will not be second team much longer if he keeps that up.

  • I prefer LBs that can stop ball carriers near or behind the LOS . Having the speed to chase down a RB is nice but if the LBs had done their Job he wouldnt be running free 10 yards beyond the LOS.

  • Russell having the red jersey really confused things for our first team defense. Read option is tough to stop when you can't take a shot at the qb.

  • Who is Jerry Williams? He had 4 solo tackles and 2 pass break ups. I think he is a walk on RS freshman corner but I am not sure. Does anyone know anything else about him?

  • jerry williams walk on from lexington played qb in highschool runs in the 4.4 range nice looking walkon moved from wr to cb this yr.

  • If Dixon had Williams speed he'd be a starter for sure. I still think Dixon's best position will be as a Nickel player or safety once he matures. He lacks the footspeed to be a starting Corner.

  • I wasn't there but Williams had quite a game for a CB against the first team.

Rb's getting free is more than if a play side Lb isn't doing his job... There are hundreds of variables, bad play call, missed assignment, poor D-line play etc... It's never just one persons fault unless they miss the tackle. Like I said Miles is going to be a good player.
