It's fine as long as he'll run his routes correctly, catch most of the passes thrown to him, and actually block downfield for another WR who catches a pass for more yardage.
I am caustiously optimistic about some of the new WR's because of what those of you who have seen them play say they can do to help us. I am not, however, much enamored with any of the WR's we have on the team from the last couple of previous seasons because few of them have done their jobs or lived up to expectations. Some of those guys need to go, as they've let the fan base down, have failed to compete, and just generally been a bunch of posers & pretenders while wasting the coaching staff's time with them.
Am I being harsh? Yes, I am, because they deserve it. It has just been one failure after another with this current crop of WR's. They are supposed to be SEC WR's, but so far they have not acted like SEC WR's.
If mid-level SEC programs like South Carolina & Arkansas can get WR's that will catch passes, then why can't ours do the same for us?MinterWonderlnd

Agreed. And I will be brutally honest...I do not expect McCaskill or Fields to.contribute in a meaningful way other than maybe a decent performance or two. I know they gave both had injury problems and its certainly not their fault, but I personally think their time has passed. You rarely see WR's have great last years after a career plagued by injuries. It is too easy to get passed on the depth chart by other playmakers at WR (and RB).

I'm actually hoping they get passed. It would mean alot if a few of our young guys could step up and take spots. It would mean a lot for the present and the future. But hey if Gene or EJ turns in a solid year that would be great as well. Bottom line somebody is gonna have to step up and play SEC caliber football.

No doubt about it. I don't care who it is, but SOMEONE other than King needs to step up and play like an SEC-caliber WR. We can't just have one guy play like an SEC WR and the others continue to serve as warm bodies on the field who can't get off the line of scrimmage, get open, communicate with the QB, run the right routes or catch the ball.
I personally think Collins, Robinson and Sweat will do just that this year (and, as crazy as it may sound, people have said to look out for Boyd this year, but I will believe it when I see it). The unknowns are Whitlow, Cobbins, Cunningham and Legree, but each of them COULD be exciting.

I don't think there is any question that Collins and Robinson will produce. King will be the #1. Other than that we're gonna have to find a way to use Whitlow and Bookie in the offense. We need special plays and packages to get the most out of those guys. Both can throw, catch, and run. Put em in the backfield at times. I'm hoping Sanders will be creative with those guys but I have my doubts. Joker need to make sure he find a way to use these guys. And I'm really hoping like you that Sweat will be our #2-4 pure receiver with Robinson and Collins. Definitely agree that we've got some young athletes that could be exciting but like I said its about finding a way to accentuate their strengths.

I hope Sanders will be creative too but he hasn't been thus far... I really wish Randy was the QB coach and a new young gun like Woodson could call the plays... I don't see why we don't use more screens and draws, back when Joker called the plays we had a killer screen game and even used play action... Randy's play calling is alittle vanilla IMO. I'm happy we got Whitlow I think there is a chance he can become a very good "X" type WR at 6'2 210#... To bad Joker couldn't land Mckay. I think he and Harmon both had the ability to be good outside wr's for us.

I LOATHE Sanders'playcalling as an OC. Zero creativity. There is a LOT more that any remotely creative OC could do with our playback, but he seems terrified to find creative ways to get that ball in our playmakers' hands and he seems to latch onto plays that work a few times and runs them over and over again, even when the D is stopping them. I will be the first to admit that I want him gone so bad I can't stand it.

I really believe that Adams would still be here if Sanders would have altered our offense alittle so he could have got the ball alittle more... Everyone knows how complex our scheme is, we all know Randy could have dialed up a play were Adams ran the shallow crossing route that Roark always got... I see no way Adams gets ran down by a Ole Miss LB like Roark did. Against Miss St or Ole Miss I was so pissed because Roark caught a crossing route and got ran down by a freaking LB in open field with no angle... If Randy would have just threw Adams a bone he would probably be primed and ready to be a solid WR this year.
Some of the catches Adams made late in the year blew my mind. The kid was so fast it's untelling how good he could have been, he did drop easy passes i've heard (during practice sometimes) but he made some diving catches that showed great hands and athleticism... I really wish Adams was still on the team his quickness and speed were elite, we need Cunningham to step up. We need a proven "X" WR very bad, especially one that can block and go over the top of smaller db's, we need to find the next Mathews, Stevie, King type kid. I'm worried about our WR's, I hope these young guys are ready because Gene just doesn't have it anymore. I know he's a good kid and Joker loves him but he has no shake left, his knee is shot...

I think Sweat, Legree and Cunningham are the only "X" types (i.e. taller, stretch the field WR's instead of smaller, slot types) on the roster after this next season. If Whitlow or Cobbins take to the WR position like a fish to water, they both have the size and athleticism to be outside WR's as well. Needless to say they are all 5 unproven, so we don't know what we're going to get. This time next year we could very well be sitting here talking about how awesome any of those 3 did and how pumped we are that we have 2 or 3 more years with him/them as our outside WR(s). Nonetheless, I don't think we can sit back and count on that, so it is IMPERATIVE that we sign a big, proven playmaker (not a project or another ATH who will learn the position for the first time at UK) at WR in this class.
I know we have beaten this subject into the ground, but I still can't understand how we can never seem to sign a big-time WR who is coveted by other good programs.
