Dickie V offers his "Super 7" for 2012-13

    UK and UofL are both too high, IMO. Did the Cards sign somebody I'm not aware of??? And lots of shoes to fill at UK.

    If that's what college hoops looks like for next year, it's going to be another down year overall.

    Vitale is probably assuming that Petrino will be running the offense next year.

  • Considering what most everyone else out there is losing this year, other than IU and UL, I don't think its all THAT crazy to put us really high. Maybe #2 is a tad high with us most likely not returning any significant contributors but Wiltjer and Harrow (contributed at NC State last yr), but I can see top 5.

  • what that tells me is the respect cal has now gained with his ability to recruit prepare and then gel his young teams. and louisville and indiana will both be very good next yr uofl did make a final4 this yr.

  • UL got lucky at the end of the year. Who is their outside shooter next year with the departure of Smith and Kuric? No way they should be top 5, imo.

    IU should be #1.

    UK at #2 is too high. I can see top 10 and possibly #5 but that's it until I see how the kids play together next year.

    I think Baylor is top 5 and if UF is a potential top 5 too.

  • I don't think UK has enough to say we are #2, then again what team does. Everyone lost key players it seems this year. UL returns almost everyone but it is much harder being hunted then playing the underdog.

  • ^ Agree. Florida should be really strong. I like what they have coming back as much or more than UL.

  • College Hoops is going to be WAYYYYY down next year IMO. Lots of parity in a bad way IMO.

  • I agree that when you look at their roster UL top 3 seems far too high, but when you really think about the rest of the country I kind of get it. They return a Final Four team that seemed to finally embrace the best parts of how a Rick Pitino coached team plays defense and upgrade in two spots. IMO, Russ Smith starting in place of Chris Smith and Blackshear in place of Kuric makes them better offensively. In a normal year I'd also think UK was too high but again I think college basketball will be so down next season that UK basically justifies a high preseason ranking based off talent alone. KU is the team the seems way too high for me, losing Robinson and Taylor and not bringing in much unless I'm mistaken.

  • He rated us too high. This is the first year that Cal has a team that doesn't have a couple of key players back. We do have talent but are very thin in the backcourt and leadership may be a problem. Cal will do a good job with them and we will win a lot of games, but unless a key player returns we will probably only be a top fifteen team. Hope I am wrong.

    Wiltjer is a big piece and harrow will be in his second year running the offense and the chance to play against Teague everyday in practice is huge...so to me that's 2 pieces back and if hood can become a top 40 player that he was rated would be huge

  • Justifiable or not.... I'm agreeing with Dicky V. A consistent high ranking is something else that potential recruits notice... and that helps to lure more interest. Anything that keeps us in the "positive" spotlight, is a great thing for our program and ALL of BBN. IMHO

    For that reason, I refuse to say "we're overrated"... like some on here. That's just foolish to me.

  • The way I look at it is this......

    (1) We all know how much most other teams out there are also losing this year, with Indiana, UL and UF pretty much bringing back the most.

    (2) We are for sure (assuming no one ends up with academic problems) bring in Goodwin, Poythress, Noel and Cauley to go with Harrow and Wiltjer as the more likely key contributors. We also still have at least 3 or 4 (I can't remember which) spots available for guys like Bennett, Oriakhi, Jefferson, etc. if everyone leaves who most of us are expecting to leave. Cal is FAR from finished with this class.

    (3) We all know how good Cal is at getting his players to gel and buy into the team concept.

    (4) Our team will go into the season with that swagger of the defending National Champs, regardless of how many of them saw significant playing time or were even on the team this year.

    (5) The Kentucky Effect.

    When you factor in #'s 1-5 above, I would have a difficult time arguing that we likely won't be a top 5 team by the time next March rolls around. Its kind of like Bama in football these days. When in doubt, throw them in the top 5 and you will likely end up being right by the time it all plays itself out.

  • As much as I hate to say it IU will be very good and I can see UL in top ten maybe. We will be a top 5 team and FL will be good but they are going to lose Beal and he was really coming into his own and the end. UCLA will be back also Anderson and Muhamad, the Weirs twins and they are playing in the weak ass Pac 10 .

    Yes. Florida could be very, very good next season. I think people are looking at Louisville in a "best-case scenario" for next year. Not sure if they are more of the team from the first part of the season or the second part of the season.

    Indiana will be very good as well.

    But as a whole, a big step back for college basketball as a whole.

    Bill Self is getting the benefit of the doubt in a lot of these preseason polls. I understand he's a great coach but losing Taylor and Robinson and not really adding anybody that will make a huge impact I just don't know.

    Definitely agree with most that IU should be #1. They're adding some solid players and not really losing anybody. They've got talent and experience plus Crean can coach.

    The emergence of Blackshear will make up for losing both Smith and Kuric. He's gonna be pretty damn good. Behannan and Dieng will make them tough inside. If Siva can improve his decision making I could definitely see them as top 3. I expect Kevin Ware to be pretty solid as well.

    As for us we'll see. By the end of the year we'll be as good as anybody I think.

    Surprised like others to not see UF in there. Do people expect Beal and Young to leave or what?

    No UNC or Duke? I can't stand either program, and dislike their coaches VERY much, but it's a strange year indeed if neither is considered among the 7 best.

    As for UofL being atop the rankings, I find that to be a bit much. They do not have the personnel to be a #1 team.

    I'm with most, at this juncture, in saying IU should be #1. They have a LOT coming back with a very good coach.

    As for UK, now that Cal has shown he can win a title with FR and SO, they will always be sitting among the elite every season until Cal and his young players prove otherwise.

  • Louisville is returning everyone to a Final 4 team. Preseason #1 is legit for them. They won't keep it but it's hard to argue against it.

    I think this will be interesting to watch because, really, Wiltjer will be the only guy with much of that experience. Will it rub off on Harrow, too? And what about Hood bouncing back from injury and Beckham perhaps getting more minutes?
