Do you think Henderson is a punk?

  • Sorry if this has already been mentioned or linked...I couldn't find it if it was. Is this a punk move? I remember the "call me" gesture by Cousins, but that was kind of warranted IMO. This guy taunts pretty much every home crowd he plays against. I'm actually surprised he doesn't have a bunch of Technical fouls. I hope they shut him up tonight on the court by ending their win streak.

Marshall Henderson draws a foul, hits two from the line, and taunts the Auburn student section in a 63-61 Ole Miss victory. 10-26-13.

  • This is pretty much a case of: If he's on your team you love it/him and if he's not you hate it/him. Not unlike Joakim Noah, DeMarcus Cousins, and other guys who have been demonstrative in the SEC.

  • Yeah, I guess you're right Matt. I just don't remember the commentators saying that Cousins should be thrown out for his antics, which I've now heard during a few Ole Miss games.

  • I like him.

    Exactly.

I'm all for playing with emotion and playing with flare especially if you can back it up but Henderson is a little over the top IMO.

  • I think he is nothing but a punk that oughta be set out for a while. I personally cannot stand someone who acts like this guy. IMO after he pulled the stunt at Auburn he should be suspended. I am a fan of playing with passion no doubt, but there is a difference between playing with passion (kidd-gilchrist) and being a punk (Henderson). I just don't have time for his kind of antics, they are nonsense, and trashy. Oh and as far as the interview goes, where he said he would show UK who the real national champ is, he knew he would never have to play that team. If he had MKG in his face all night tonight he'd be singing a different tune at the end of the game.

  • What you will see tonight is a steady diet of illegal screens to get him open. To make the official make the call we have to make contact with the screener. If he makes a three he will not let his game speak for itself, he will be a jerk.
    .

  • College officials are pretty terrible about calling illegal screens and pushing off on rebounds. Ole Miss is pretty relentless about this. We can still win though because even though we're not that good they're a little overrated as well.

Haven't played anyone, struggling with bad teams.

  • Matt, I'm going to partially disagree with you here, but that doesn't mean your point isn't valid, because it definitely is. I just don't think it applies when comparing what Marshall Henderson did in the video above and the Cousins "Call me" gesture, mentioned by the OP (AE2449). There's really no comparison between them.

If you want to watch the Cousins play and gesture again to refresh your memory ........
    GO HERE >>>>>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdglZiDT-ug

1st - Cousins made his signal as he turned to go play defense after he had just dunked the ball.
2nd - Cousins wasn't demonstrative about it, and he didn't direct it at any one person or even a group of people. He simply looked toward the student section, made the signal, and immediately turned away.
3rd, and probably the most important - Cousins actually turned what could have been an ugly story and situation into something lighthearted and humorous. The Mississippi State fans who were calling and texting Cousins were using racial and gay slurs towards him. So Cousins infused a little bit of humor into the situation with the "Call me" gesture.

    -------------------------------------------

Marshall Henderson's actions were the most extreme example of taunting & the most classless unsportsmanlike behavior that I've seen in quite awhile. It's probably not quite as bad as Mike Tyson taunting a media member with "I'll F#&$ you till you love me, F@&&$T", but it's pretty bad. I would give him the benefit of the doubt and say that those fans must have been saying bad things to him the whole night, but I've heard that Henderson does this sort of thing in every game. I've never seen him play live for myself, but those that I've talked to who have all came to same conclusion, that he's just a punk. I was withholding my own judgement until I saw him for myself tonight, but now that I've seen that video I already agree with the status quo.

So to answer the OP's question ...... Yes, that was a punk move, and Marshall Henderson is a punk. He's a punk ass mofo as a matter of fact, and I hope he brings that trash with him to the game tonight. His S#!T talking could be just the sort of thing to finally galvanize our boys into a "team" that has each others backs. I'm hoping that Marshall Henderson comes out in the first half and goes off for the first 10 minutes, and talks loads of trash. Have that totally piss our boys off and they hit the "No more Mr. Nice Guy" threshold for the first time this season. They start to fire back with a little bit of nastiness themselves, and totally go bonkers on them in the 2nd half. I do realize that's a lot to have happen, but it's my wish nonetheless.

    -------------------------------------------

Thanks a lot AE2449 for starting this post and attaching that link to the video. I'm now officially fired up for this game.

Don't get me wrong, I love DeMarcus. He was a joy to cover. And that particular incident was funny more than anything. But there was a lot of stuff that he did on the court beyond that 'Call Me' thing that gave him the reputation he had around the league with other teams and players. Not all of it was visible to the TV camera.

I don't know, I find it hard to fault the players themselves. I don't mind emotion. I don't even mind having an edge to your game. I find more fault with, in this case, Andy Kennedy for allowing it to happen if it's way over the line. Coaches can reform behavior through various means. If a kid is way out of line and his coach says nothing, well, how can you really hate on the kid for it?

  • Didn't Bogans and Fitch do something similiar after we beat Florida at Florida to go undeafeated in the SEC?

I have no problem with what he did. Crowd was probably giving it to him all night. When you win you can talk trash back.

After posting I found the picture I was talking about. Hope this works.

  • I've not watched an Ole Miss game this year, so I've not seen any other Henderson incidents. I watched the video posted above of the end of the Auburn game and Henderson didn't do anything any worse than I've seen a hundred times from a hundred players at a hundred different schools ... including UK. Nothing outrageous about popping jerseys after a close win on the road. Happens all the time.

  • Well lets see, he had to answer to the Secret Service for buying about two ounces of pot with counterfeit money amounts to $800, violated his probation and served 25 days in jail and 7 on work release. Add that to his on court antics and you have a punk. I also saw somebody tweet him saying it was funny that he says, "wet his ass" every time he shoots. I hope he comes into the lane and Nerlens bruises his ass.

  • I don't think many people are upset about the Auburn incident. I've heard about this kid all season. The only problem with the Auburn game is its Auburn and you barely won. They didn't just go undefeated in league play and they didn't just knock off the top seed in the tourney. They beat Auburn, barely. Show some class and be happy you got out there with a win.

Most college players can score 19 ppg if the shoot the ball 25 times
Also for all the mouth running he does.. He flops like a soccer player

  • well he didn't seem to be bad.

I saw him help our team get up few times in the game. So i don't think he is a punk...

or maybe because he was getting beat that he was doing that. not sure.

  • I don't think playing with emotion within the game is what makes him a punk. Its the after the game antics and the whole $800 counterfeit to buy pot thing. That's what make him a punk. Also, this kid has been to 4 different schools that screams a problem child. I like how he plays with intensity but he is a punk and he loves doing it. Just listen to his interviews. He should have had a technical tonight after spotting the ball across half court because he was pissed. Then he was screaming at his coach tonight on the bench and looked like he was going to walk off the floor. I don't think his play is a problem but the outside stuff is too much.

    BigBlueMook

  • I personally don't like mouthy arrogance even if you can back it up...

    2 reasons..

1 - Why give your opponents reason to rally? Phil Jackson makes this point in his book "Sacred Hoops", which is how the Bulls were so good when they won 3 championships in a row
    2 - What happened to sportsmanship/class?
