Donovan rates UK's NCAA title odds

When it comes to offering an opinion on which team might win the 2012 NCAA Tournament there may be no person more qualified than Florida coach Billy Donovan.

  • Definitely no specific formula to beating UK. They do too many things well and are just too balanced.

But I'll tell you how you don't beat UK: pressing them. They may turn it over a bit but they're going to get 10-15 layups/dunks at the rim. It's suicide.

And you can't slow it down either because they're the best defensive team in the country and they'll choke you out in the halfcourt.

  • I actually like the press defense if I was trying to gameplay against Kentucky. As much as they have the ability to destroy a press, it seems to me they are somewhat hesitant to attack when they get pressured. I'd like to see some statistics from yesterday and the season overall, but I feel like we may have turned it over or had to call TO on 40% or more of the possessions that UF was able to set up their press. Yes we had some run outs and dunks, but for some reason, and for the life of me I don't understand it, we seem to get more passive when defenses press us. Traditionally, I would say that is smart, to take care of the ball and methodically beat the press would be a good thing, but this team has the ability to attack a press and just tear it apart, and I've yet to see that on a consistent basis.

I think my formula for trying to beat UK would be to hound the person with the ball, do my damnedest to block out on every defensive possession, set up the press when I could, pull Davis out of the paint as much as possible, hope that my team made 70%+ of the limited open shots we were able to get and UK ha an off shooting night.

Everyone is right, there is no distinctive formula, it's going to take a perfect storm to beat UK, and it would be a battle even with that the way they're playing right now.

Chris, love the phrase "choke you out in the halfcourt" LOL. That's great and about the best way I've heard it described.
