EJ Fields last season ??

  • ESPNU replayed the UL game from last season the other night ... the game EJ broke out finally and had 7-57-1.
Question is what happened to him the rest of the season ?? Injury or doghouse ?? Looked ready to take on the role opposite of La'Rod. Need him to step up this season and produce numbers like that all year.

  • The coaching staff has said that EJ suffers from real lapses in confidence in his own ability and thus it affects his performance both in games and practices. They've had a really difficult time getting him to overcome the mental ups and downs of the sport.

When you have a breakout game like Fields did against UofL and then hardly see the field the next game or the rest of the year I can see how his confidence lapsed.

  • I wondered the same. He looked great against you know that one team and then he did nothing the rest of the year. We need him to be consistent. You are getting your school paid. Come out and give maximum effort and believe that you can help. We're not asking for ALL SEC caliber season. Just be solid and catch the ball when it comes your way.

You earn your time in games with your consistent, daily effort and performance in practice. One good game in three seasons does not guarantee you more playing time.

He struggled with some drops even after the Louisville game.

He dropped two passes and then didn't see the field anymore. How many did Roark drop?
    He continued to play

Roark was benched and relegated to special teams after his bout with drops and only returned to the field later in the year.

  • Roark was at WR for all but maybe one game playing alot. Thats not counting the UT game where he was QB.

He was basically benched after the Central Michigan game and was not a part of the game plan again until he broke out with 13 catches vs. Miss. State and then seven against Ole Miss. We even had a story after the Ole Miss game detailing the return from being benched, where both Joker Phillips and Tee Martin openly discussed him being benched for the most part and forced to earn his way back on offense through practice and special teams.

"It says a lot about Matt because he did get yanked in a couple of games..he went on special teams and went about his business." Joker Phillips said.

  • He had 3 catches in the UF game right after the UofL game in week 4. 4 against LSU in week 5. 3 over the next two weeks then had the 13 catch game

Fields, after Roark was benched against CMU, had the following games:

    UL: 7-57
    UF: 2-16
    LSU: 1-16

He participated against USCe and J'ville State prior to Roark returning to the starting lineup, but didn't have any catches.

So: Roark is the starter, gets benched against CMU. Proceeds to catch 10 passes in the next 5 games coming off the bench. Fields, in the same time span, catches 10 passes, including 7 against UL, 2 against UF, and 1 against LSU. He participates in every single game after that point, even after Roark is given the starting job after catching 13 against MSU, but does not record another caught pass.

So can we finally stop with the myth that Fields "never saw the field" after the UL game?

Going by memory he didn't have many passes thrown his way to be able to catch a lot of balls. I didn't say he didn't see the field. I said hardly see the field or maybe I should have said see the ball come his way, but he didn't play the last 4 games of the season. And I can't remember more than 6 passes being thrown his way after UofL. Now maybe that was his fault for not getting open I'm not sure. But they stuck with Roark and he broke out. I didn't see the same with Fields after looking like the best receiver on the team against UofL.

  • Seriously, does absolutely everything have to be turned into a conspiracy to keep the superstars sidelined?

Fields was the second best receiver for UK against UL and caught a few more passes in the next couple of games. Roark caught 13 passes against MSU and earned his starting spot back. Now there's some sort of coaching/quarterback agenda against Fields to hold him down, in a season where the team was desperate for playmakers?

Good grief, no wonder so many people are miserable. They are constantly jumping at shadows.

WTF are you talking about? How about you quit spreading "Myths" like Fields played in every game. Get your facts straight before you come at me. Fields had all of 6 passes thrown at him after the UofL game. Nuff said.

Facts are facts, we didn't have many receivers shine last year overall. Fields played in 9 games according to the stats, and I doubt unless he is your kid and you never went to the bathroom or concession stand, that you can be sure that he only had 6 passes thrown his way. You can't stand on the stats of one game and expect to keep a starting wr position. If he did have 6 passes thrown to him, he only caught 3 more after the ul game, so Fields had his problems last year, as did Roark did early. I guess my question is how many bad receivers can you keep in the game while they learn to catch a ball thrown right to them?

Fact is that Fields did play after the UL game. That he didn't have many passes thrown his way would not be the fault of the coaching staff but rather his route running and being in sync with the QB.

I remember Roark being benched and lauded the staff for sitting him. Roark was a hard worker and a special teams demon. IT sucks that he struggled to catch the ball like all our WR's.

If Fields wants more PT he needs to be more consistent in practice and in the games.

You may not have intended for the post to come off as negative but it clearly did, especially with you trying to defend your stance that Fields didn't get a chance when MM clearly showed that he did.

  • Fields is listed on the participation chart for every game of the season save Vanderbilt and Tennessee.

Here's a handy link for your reference: http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2011-2012/teamstat.html

I have pointed out the catches he made after you initially claimed that he "never saw the field" after the UL game.

Now that your statements have been discredited and proven factually incorrect, you've gone into a backpedal that Caffey can envy.

Instead of "never seeing the field" now Fields is being held back because the QB and coaches managed to scheme away from him and refuse to throw the ball to a clear superstar who caught 7 passes against UL one time for about 8 YPC.

Ridiculous. EJ could very well have a good season if he improves a few things. I certainly hope he does. Maybe he'll break out, catch 10 TDs, and be All-SEC. But to act like he's some proven game-changer who, but for the ignorance of the coaches, would have had a monster season last year is just inane.

It's hilarious that some of these guys judge players when they have never seen a practice. Bout the same as some of these guys who discredit recruits when they have never seen them play a down.

I would also add that Roark was a tough dude and probally the best blocker of the WRs. If you must decide between recievers that are all dropping the ball you go with the tough one, that played with a lot of heart, that is a good blocker, that has paid his dues on the special teams.

I believe that Roark also proved he was some what a leader by what he did in the UT game.

Roark was a tough motivated football player that probally was not a great WR but I would have welcomed him on my team.

I wasn't knocking Roark at all. Just pointing out he had struggled with drops most of his career and got it together because he kept getting chances. Fields has looked good in the last two spring games and the UofL game. Lets hope he can put it together and have a break out season.

He had very few oppertunites after he dropped a few passes. And I also said it could have been his own fault for not getting open if you had taken the time to read my post instead of throwing a hissy fit. It also could of been the fault of the QB for locking onto certain receivers and not going through his progressions.

  • I would love for veterans King and Fields to lead this team, it would help the young receivers and SMITH alot. If those two have a great year this year, it will probably mean that our offense came together and was successful.
