  • For all you UofL fans who can't count that's 23 freshmen or sophs in the 2 deep. Both teams are young, not just yours.

  • Shocked to see Aaron Boyd in the 2 deep....I havent heard his name mentioned once? Has he improved that much?

Agreed. I have a feeling we'll see Sweat and Legree before we see Boyd.

  • Christian Coleman??

    Catfan_cook

  • Is Coleman injured? I noticed he is not on the 2 deep at defensive tackle. That was a little surprising to me. It also worries me because we are pretty small up front after Cobble and Rumph. Coleman is about the only back-up that has good size.

    cat in the hat

  • Some observationss:
    * Like a lot of others on the board, the OL scares me. They are one injury away from being a real problem. The backup at RG is from NoKy, and I've talked with several people who saw him play in HS and all of them indicate what a great (and really big) kid he is, but every one of them can't believe he's playing in the SEC. I've never heard of the backup center, is he a walk-on?
    * This is the first time in a long time I can remember UK's starting LB corp all weighing in excess of 230 lbs. That should be a good thing, particularly for run defense.
    * Along those same lines, the size of the first team defense in general looks promising.
    * The secondary concerns me. Benton has never impressed me much, his backup just returned to the team, and three true freshman are in the two deep. Ouch.
    * I still think the difference between a 3-9 season or a bowl season rests with Max Smith. If he has indeed improved, the Cats will be a lot better than I thought they would be after looking at the schedule, and they will have a real shot at beating UofL this week.

  • Has Jabari Johnson always been considered the #2 at MLB?

When they moved Brause to WLB, Johnson moved up to 2nd.

  • Thanks, Matt, I must have missed that in the notes. Hopefully he gets it figured ouit sooner rather than later. Still think he will be a gamer.

  • LOL at the people trying to argue that we aren't young. Gracious there are a lot of wet-behind-the-ears guys on that two deep. Expect some wide-eyed moments the first couple of games.

Some good observations here, many I agree with.

I thought the exact same thing about our 1st team Defense, particularly up front. That is SEC size. Also agree that the secondary has me concerned. Benton has never really impressed, but he was solid last year. Nothing spectacular, but very steady and I expect he will be a good leader for us. Neloms should be fine, and Rice as well. I'm curious to see how Lowery does with the full time starting role however.

Offensively, it's al about Max. If he is good, this team could surprise some people. If he's bad, I think we will see exactly what many experts predict. It's that simple.

I was a little surprised to see Robinson not in the two deep at WR...but I'm going to take a positive spin on this. As much as he was hyped up this camp, I'm going to assume it's because of his punt returning skills. I'm hoping so, because that is a huge opportunity for this team.

EXACTLY. Lot of Frosh and sophs....and of the few upper classmen we have, they haven't exactly seen a ton of playing time on the field.

I'm sure we will see some oops moments where inexperience hurts us...but I think being young can be a good thing for us. I think this team will play pretty lose and aggressive despite the doom and gloom predictions. This is a team that is basically 100% Joker's players.....and regardless of what we may think, they love and respect him. I have no doubt that they are going to play their asses off for him.

  • I think this depth chart is a lot of smoke and mirrors. Charlie Strong puts out a bogus depth chart as it pertains to his offensive skill players. I think this is a little cat and mouse play in response to Charlie's tactics. For example, you'll see a lot more of DeMarcus Sweat than you'll see of Aaron Boyd.

Heck, there are many of our own fans who are claiming we aren't young.

We also have 23 in the two deep. Both teams are as young as anyone in the nation. We are slightly younger with 9(6 that play)seniors to uk's 17.

What did u do when u ran out of fingers and toes counting underclass men? Lol

Robinson is listed at #2 behind King.

UK only has 16 Srs on scholariship.

But this begs the question. If UL is as young as UK, or younger....why do all UL fans think this game is going to be a walk in the park?

  • The back-up DT are VERY light by SEC standards. Hope Johnson and Douglas can use their first step to get penetration and disrupt the play.

very concerning anytime Rumph or Cobble is out of the game. like waiving a checkered flag to the opposing team's OC: Time to call some off tackle runs/runs right up the gut!
