**FOOTBALL PRACTICE NOTES (Fri., April 13)**

  • **Beautiful day here in Lexington, which worked well for Kentucky's spring 'football coaches clinic' they hold annually. It was interesting that Joker began his post-practice comments by saying maybe in retrospect he should have opened practice up to the media a little more because this was their best practice of the spring and, coincidentally or not, there were a lot more eyes on the players today. That brought out the desire to make an impression and the whole dynamic just seemed, at least for one day, to play into a much crisper practice. I don't know what that means for the future of spring ball - or maybe even the first week or so of fall practice - but it was interesting to hear Joker say it. One of the criticisms I see most from fans is Joker is unwilling to take blame for anything or admit he might have made an error in judgement, but he certainly seemed to do so today.

**One guy whose name keeps coming up this spring is Marcus Caffey. Joker said the CB made a sensational interception today, the type of play he's rarely seen from a CB during his time at Kentucky. How has Caffey made the move from RB to CB so quickly and seamlessly? Joker said they knew all along he was a perfect CB but the kid wanted to try his hand at RB first, so they let him do that. They then had to convince him that CB is more of a premier position than RB, especially as it pertains to a kid's NFL future and once they did that Caffey was on board and has taken off at the position.

**When asked how good his football team is right now, Joker said they have a long way to go and aren't close to where they want to ultimately be, but they have made marked improvement this spring. He again reiterated that he hopes fans will stick with them and not form preconceived notions before they get out there on Sept. 2 against Louisville.

**Joker said it's been an interesting spring in that they've got so many new faces being asked to step forward and be the next wave of quality players at UK. He continually mentions guys like Avery Williamson, Malcolm McDuffen, Bud Dupree, Miles Simpson, etc. as guys who have a chance to really make names for themselves.

**Joker said they are also leaning on S Martavius Neloms for vocal leadership this spring given his experience on the field.

**Spent a long time talking to Andre' Woodson today and one thing that really caught my attention is how much he raved, unprompted, about FB D.J. Warren. Said he doesn't want to put too much on him but that he reminds him so much of John Conner but younger and with much better hands. Said Warren is so instinctive on the field, which is rare for a kid that young and at that position. He also brought up TE Ronnie Shields. Said he could be a match up nightmare flexed out in the slot liek they used to do with Jacob Tamme, but he has to put it all together.

**Woodson also talked about Maxwell Smith's growth and the thing that stood out most is what I continually hear from guys both on and off the record: Smith is really well liked in all corners of the locker room and guys want to play for him and follow him. That's huge at QB.

**Tomorrow's scrimmage will be their last really 'live' work until the Blue-White Game next Saturday. Said it's important and that guys really have a chance to make some lasting impressions heading into the summer tomorrow.

  • Awesome, thanks Matt. Joker probably shoulda opened it up more to the media, imo, would have played a difference in their performance.

    Keep Calm & Stoops On..

  • Thanks. That sounds positive. Joker's comments are interesting and may be the sign of a maturing coach. I can understand closing things to get some work done but then open it part of the time to show off your team's skill and progress.

  • Good report. Thanks, Matt. I can't wait to hear how the LB's, CB's (especially Caffey), and WR's look in the B/W game next week. Lots of youth and inexperience at those 3 spots, but lots of promising talent there as well.

For some reason, I really am not that worried about the WR in particular. I know it has been a problem the last few years, but something tells me we are going to see better production at WR with Washington in charge than we did with Tee. Don't get me wrong, I hate that we lost Tee, but I don't get the impression coaching the "skills of the trade" for WR's was exactly his strong point. On the other hand, Washington has been coaching WR's, and really good ones at that, for a long time. Combine that with young talent like Collins, Robinson (who is apparently coming into his own this spring), Cunningham, Sweat, Legree, etc. and I like the future at the position.

  • The funny thing is, Joker's always felt that way about more eyes at practice holding players accountable to a higher level of performance. He told us he was planning to do that the year before he took over. I'm not sure what or who changed his mind, but I'm very surprised that they've closed things up harder under his watch.

  • the other odd thing about closing up practice...Football gets COMPLETELY lost in the shuffle.
I used to zip over to read JDrum's practice notes every day of practice.
Now that it is just relaying Joker's comments, just not the same.

I love UK football and have been a season ticket holder for several years now. (take my son w me usually, but had my daughter w me for the UT win - great memory forever w her on the field w me afterwards)

But, I have to say, I feel like I've had all optimism beaten out of me.
Yes, we've had worse stretches, but it feels like the gradual "rise" under Brooks to respectablity crested and we are slowly sinking under Joker.

    Really, really hope I'm wrong.

But I digress. Yes, open practice Joker! Generate some excitement and buzz around the program!

I'm not there, I'm in south Florida. Maybe some of you guys that actually get to see these things happening are encouraged, but all I have to go on is what I've seen the last two years, in addition to all the smoke CJP blew up our noses last year about how promising last year's team was.
Maybe I missed something along the way, but during the season, you know, when the games counted, it wasn't happening, especially with the WR's and Morgan Newton. It just wasn't there.
We have to start seeing some POSITIVE results from these guys. They are not performing, and in a lot of circumstances I find it hard to believe that they are this bad. Seriously.
And I'm not doubting what you're saying mj, because I know you call it like you see it, but the Kentucky WR's were among the worst in the SEC & the NCAA last year. That is not a mark of distinction that I would want to be known for, but that's what we have. And while Maxwell Smith may be improving and may truly be loved in the locker room & on the field, if his WR's don't/won't/can't/refuse to catch the damned football he will end up just like Morgan Newton did.......... INJURED and with no confidence in anyone in the WR corps.
And then......... CJP closes spring practices so that no one except the chosen few get to see what's actually going on.
So please understand that after what I've witnessed the last two years from these players, I am just not embracing what I've been hearing so far.
Here is where I am at with these guys.......... we have another 5-7 or a 4-8 season, and anything good that Coach Rich Brooks did will have been undone and we will continue to be one of the worst teams in the SEC year in and year out. CJP will probably be showed the door, and then we'll have to go through this crap all over again with another football coach.
I am so weary of watching these guys underachieve and fail every year.

He may have had some good reasons, initially, to make the decision he did, but I still feel like he should have cashed in on the good will that they earned by beating Tennessee to end the season.

People should have been really buzzing and excited about spring practice. Instead, it's "Meh."

Without this turning into ANOTHER session of complaints about our last two QB's would you say the last time UK had a QB the players WANTED to play for was Andre? I mean I always assumed things, but what would you say? Thanks

The players liked Mike Hartline much more than the outside impression amongst fans thought. He had some well publicized rough spots early but he earned a lot of tha back inside the locker room and was pretty well liked from what some former players have told me.

  • Thanks for the write up Matt!! For us football junkies its always welcome reading, even when the basketball and baseball teams are the talking points! I love the Caffey move..gives us a physical...athletic cover man that can hopefully jar some balls loose as well as geta few big momentum swinging picks thru the year. I really think Josh Forrest will be a special player...and I always felt he would be a better defender as opposed to a TE. The kids close to 6'5 now..and should hit the 240 range soon. Pair that with 4.5 speed, and a unteachable nose for making the pick (Kid had 3 ints in state title game, and already has a pick for a td in scrimmage). If the offense can mangae to move the ball..get first downs regularly..and score..say 24 a game..I think the defense will prove to be good enough to win some tight games for us!!

I'm not that worried about the WR's either but I think its because I have some kind of weird unknown confidence in Max Smith. I really don't know why I'm confident in him but I think its because since day one we've heard that he is really well liked in the locker room. Matt once again writes about this. He thows a very catchable ball and I think that will lead to the WR's being able to make more plays this year.

We all felt your pain with the WR's last year, but consider:

    1. The line was horrible and rarely gave pass plays the time to develop;

    2. Newton does not have good touch on his passes. Smith does.

    3. Outside of King, we had no one making plays at WR last year, save a couple of decent games from Roark.

    4. Collins, Cunningham, Robinson, Sweat, Legree. All guys who should, or ay least could, step in this year and do good things.

    5. Tee was a great recruiter, but he is nowhere near the WR coach as Washington. Look for crisp, sharp routes now and guys who finally know how to use something other than athleticism to get open.

There is a lot to be excited about concerning our young WR's.

I'm not totally convinced of this just yet.

Granted, Morgan struggled last year at a scary 47% But that was against people like Florida, LSU and SC. Smith was a modest 54% against much more manageable competition, AND he had the benefit of better line play when those guys started to get healthy and gelled.

Both need to pick it up in 2012.

Newton also played against Louisville, Central Michigan and WKU. All those games we dropped numerous passes. Its obvious to me that Smith throws a better ball. Newton had no touch over the middle.

I *think* he does, but there's been no evidence just yet. All we saw him complete in his starts last year were sideways variety. Gotta see him go downfield vs. SEC competition before we can say for sure.

I guess thats mostly true but I did see him complete a few passes that I'm almost certain Newton couldn't make. Just simple over the middle completions. And if he's only better completing screens, and quick slants just the dinks and dunks and makes good decisions then he's better than Newton for this offense.

For anything good Coach Brooks did for UK, it didn't include capitalizing on the 2006 & 2007 seasons' successes with improved recruiting in 2008-09.

Agreed, and I remember the staff saying back then that we wouldn't see the results in recruiting for 2-3 yrs b/c the relationships had already been forged w/ high school juniors and seniors. In hindsight I think that was just a lazy approach, as we see schools experience a sudden surge in recruiting all the time due to new success, new coaches, etc.

It was sooo obvious to sooooo many UK football fans.. The folks at rivals.com said no program capitalized less with their on-field success into better recruiting than UK. Yet, most of the sunshine pumpers at the time were all saying "Rich Brooks and his staff are better talent evaluators than some computer geeks who are ranking this class so low." Now, the ardent Joker defenders (whom at the time were defending those recruiting classes) are going back and pointing to those classes as the reason Joker is struggling.

At times, I would agree. He also did a better job of going through progressions and using the TE when possible.

  • Max Smith has a quiet confidence about him without arrogance that instills confidence in the players surrounding him. That's a precious and rare commodity for a freshman to have. When Qbs enter a game and are intimidated it is immediately detected by the opposing team and they feed on it incessantly. Max just needs more experience to really blossom. I get the sense that Towles has this same quality. Russell may have it as well but who knows for sure.

    Suchy500

  • we r not gonna no what smith has until halfway threw the season. with the youth this team has i look for the last 6 games to build the needed momentum toward 2013. i really like cunningham and robinson with king if one of the two between legree sweat and fields can make considerable contributions we may have some resemblance of an offense.

    quagmire

  • i meant collins. i think cunningham is gonna be the possesion guy when king is gone.
