**FOOTBALL PRACTICE NOTES (Thu., Oct. 11)**

  • A few rather quick notes today:

###The injury front on the defensive side didn't get any better today: Martavius Neloms, Ashely Lowery and Mikie Benton are out for this week, meaning Kentucky will start true freshmen safeties Daron and Zack Blaylock. Cody Quinn will also start at CB. Cartier Rice is the only experienced guy back there.

"We'll start two true freshmen in the back end at safety in the Blaylock twins, a freshman at corner in Cody Quinn and a veteran in Cartier Rice," UK coach Joker Phillips said. "Line up and go play. One of the things you get excited about is watching how these kids prepare and the excitement level those guys have. All of them are so shy and calm it's hard to get any type of read on them. Hopefully they'll be fine."

###Kentucky will travel 30 players on the defensive side of the ball to Arkansas. 23 of those players are freshmen and sophomores. Let that sink in for a moment.

###Through all the injuries and difficult first half of the season, Phillips has mostly maintained his sense of humor about it all. His reason: "What am I going to do? You've got to," Phillips said. "You get excited for those guys because they all came here to play. I don't know if they came to play this soon but they have to. Hey, just go out there and play. Let them go. I've always taken the attitude of next man up and we'll go into this one with the same attitude. (The veterans) get behind the young guys. They know how hard they work. They'll rally together.

"That's why I'm not scared, because they don't know what they're getting into. They shouldn't have to be playing at this time of their career but they are and they're excited. I'm sure they'll be a little nervous."

###The daily Jalen Whitlow update: "He's doing better," Phillips said. "Today he got probably 90 percent of the snaps and every rep he can get in practice is really helpful for him. In the two-minute (drill) today he took a sack with about 20 seconds left so that was a great time to stop what we were doing and get it corrected. Get it out of your hand. We've taken 11 sacks since Max has been out and out line is doing a good job. We got beat a couple of times against South Carolina but after that I don't know if there's been many times our offensive line has gotten whipped."

###Phillips' biggest concern defensively is the communication in the secondary, as the Blaylock kids will be responsible for coordinating a lot of that: "The linebackers communicate to the front seven and it's hard to put a corner in charge of the back end," Phillips said. "The safety is in charge of making a lot of the calls in back end. We'll simplify some things but we also have to do enough to try and take away from what Arkansas will do in the passing game."

###Asked whether they expect Arkansas to take more deep shots in the passing game because of UK's injury situation, Phillips said of course they expect a team that throws the ball really well to try and use that to their advantage: "I think we'll see more balls in the air, whether they're deep or intermediate who knows, but I think we'll see more balls in the air," Phillips said. "We have to do a good job of disrupting the passes and timing of the quarterback up front. We have to get our hands up. I can't remember the last time we knocked down a pass. It's got to be a team effort on defense."

  • Who's our back ups at safety? I guess they could move Kory Brown back there, and then there is the curious case of Eric Dixon?? I really hope at this point they don't take off Josh Harris's redshirt mainly.

Backups are Eric Dixon and freshman walk-on Cody Lewis

  • Lol! Recruit better players and stop having mass exits after every year and you wouldn't be in this situation. Hell, Benton was starting and is a walk-on. I assume the excuses are being used so joker can claim in future interviews that his failure was due to injuries. Just please ignore that I went 6-7, 5-7, then 3-9. And that I took over a program that was on the most solid foundation that it had been on!

I assume that you created a troll account in reference to someone talking about your man-crush on James Franklin. I also assume you are mentally challenged.

Assuming is fun! We can all do it!

  • At least if we can keep some of these underclassmen around long enough to become upperclassmen we will have some experience...

I assume its impossible to ever have an objective discussion without someone interjecting their whiny feelings and crappy repetitive almost cliche opinions.

Yeah that is a terribly stupid assumption on my part.

Can we ever have a thread that is not a beat down the coaches and players?? All it turns into is repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat................ get the picture. I vote that Matt makes a new rule, if you don't have something new to say or the thought has already been posted, you get bumped. Everyone just repeats this whole Joker thing, lack of recruits, fire the staff, mediocrity (this has been the buzz word for the past year everyone has picked up on and likes to use)........... Everyone gets the picture. Stop beating a dead horse!

  • JD, 1003. I didn't make my point clear. It's basically that I'm frustrated with all the posts that get high jacked bc some idiot has to repeat some played out opinion that interferes with objective discussion. We all know our team is not good right now...the sky is blue, we don't have to discuss that. It gets old. Nobody on these boards have answers, at best we can hope someone can relay answers from someone who knows. But back to the point. Sometimes I get excited about a post that seems to be by cooler intelligent heads only to have someone deflect it with "Joker is responsible for the junior and senior classes bc he was recruiting coordinator", (which isn't even true) or "the admin doesnt want a good fball team", the back up QB syndrome really frustrates me too. All these rants do not inform and do not add anything other than repetition ad nausuem (whatever that phrase is).
I'm probably ranting in the wrong place bc I actually got my questioned answered by Matt (who are the 2's running at safety).

  • Scalf, I thought your post was directed at my response to whats-his-face. Reading again, I see that you and I are actually in agreement.

Hey sorry scalf, I took your post totally wrong. I am with you. It's ridiculous. Everyone acts like genius on the topic and it's same points worded different. I am with you on this one. Let's hope for a win Saturday. These boys really need it!

You bore me.... Nobody cares about you or your tired garbage. Do this website a favor, Go away !!!

  • To get back on topic...Our secondary is just flat out scary. Heck, ZB didn't even see the field for any significant minutes until last week!!! There is definitely some talent there, but omg! I just hope our offense can somehow find a way to control some clock. Jalen has had some decent drives and we must keep the D off the field to keep them halfway fresh. Should Arky get up big early and force us into mostly a passing game, I fear it will get very ugly. If the Cats can somehow find a way to upset the Hogs, it would be epic.

    msdcatfan

  • It doesn't get any younger than our backfield. Scary it will be. They are so young, mistakes are going to be made. We definitely need clock control. If we go 3 and out very many times, it will get ugly. Looks like weather will be around 60 with a 60% chance of rain. Rain could slow the Hogs down a bit. Although not good for fans, might be a blessing.

  • I don't understand how anyone can support Joke?? It is his fault we lack experienced players. Joke has only been here forever.

    boz

  • Facts are scary! So call names,etc.... 6-7 losing to a team without a coach, 5-7, 2-10 or 3-9 and losing to Wku! Keep up the excuses and support!

    franklinsboy

  • Jesus Christ its a broken record. A broken record playing Michael Bolton over and over again.

    tWhit

  • A broken record are people who support a crap product and flat out terrible coaching and then look for excuse after excuse! I firmly believe that it's the same people who supported tubby at the end are the same folks who are still supporting joker! Fans like you are the reason the UKAA continues to treat this program like a second class citizen! Hiring guys like guy Morris's and joker Phillips! You have to be joking.

Hey bright boy -- what was Morriss' record at head coach at UK since you mentioned him?

It's also the same people that hired Rich Brooks and Coach Cal among others. Supporting the UK football team and players is NOT the same thing as supporting Joker and the UKAA. Of course, I wouldn't expect you to understand the difference.

You are missing the point. Some people would like to have a conversation about the actual team and performance, etc without bringing up whether or not to fire the coach in each thread! You can find other threads about that, look around, or start one yourself. Heck, I don't think Joker should be retained at this point, and have said so elsewhere. But can't people talk about other aspects of the team without that?
