**FOOTBALL PRACTICE NOTES (Tue., Aug. 7)**

  • HOT in Lexington today. The first really warm day thus far for Kentucky's football practices. That's a good thing though because I think we all know the odds are high that on Sept. 2 at 3:30 in the afternoon at the Pizza Oven it's going to blazing hot. Anyways, to the notes:

***As I mentioned yesterday, it appears there is going to be someone asking for a daily quarterback battle update even when Joker Phillips clearly isn't going to divulge any information until after one or two scrimmages. Low and behold, he basically said just that today. Stay tuned, I'm sure he'll get asked again tomorrow as well.

“It's hard to answer anything,” Phillips said. “Every day we're still installing, it's new plays. We might go back and put a couple of plays we installed the last few days but usually it's new plays, new installs, new reads, different reads, different formations. It's just hard to make any type of judgment right now.

“We'll just let it play out. We'll give the two guys who have been here the longest the most reps in the first scrimmage and the second two guys equal reps between those two and see how they handle what we give them. Then we'll start dwindling from there working toward the next scrimmage.”

***Everyone is probably wondering about the wide receivers and that position was on the minds of several reporters today, as I was going to ask about their progress and someone beat me to it. Joker's quote is below but reading between the lines, you can tell he is cautiously optimistic about guys like Demarco Robinson, Daryl Collins, DeMarcus Sweat and A.J. Legree. In fact, I saw Legree doing some extra reps after practice today and that's always a good sign for a young guy when they're willing to do some extra work, especially on a hot day like today.

“If you play receiver at this level you had better be able to catch the ball. We've gotten better at that,” Phillips said. “A couple of the young guys are starting to show they can do that consistently. Now, it's only been a few practices and we're not going full speed so again, I'm holding judgment. I've seen it on the field before and then we get into game situations and we don't see it. I want to see it done in the stadium.”

***If you remember, Joker made a famous comment in the spring (and again in the summer) about whether or not Kentucky's 2012 punter was on campus or not. The clear implication was he was not real enamored with Joe Mansour or walk-on Jay Willmott in the spring and was anticipating (or praying) true freshman Landon Foster would come in and win the job outright in camp. Sounds like things are trending in that direction.

“(Foster) has got a chance,” Phillips said. “He and Joe Mansour both are punting it well. The young freshman is probably little faster right now, which we all know the key is how fast you can get it off. You can turn the guy free up the middle if you get it off fast enough because he can't get there. We have to get it out quick. Right now, (Foster) is the fastest we've ever had.”

***Joker was also asked about the move toward rugby punting and for those of you who don't believe the head coach reads his own mail, well, sounds like he does.

“We've gotten e-mails about why are we rugby punting with an NFL punter?” Phillips said. “A lot of times with the new formation that everybody is using you see rugby kicks to try and get away from the rush. You see it in the red zone a lot. You usually don't get that big a return. You get the ball on the ground or line drive it and it scares the blockers because they're afraid to get hit in the back. It's a play that has changed college football.”

***More special teams stuff: Sounds like Demarco Robinson is getting first crack at nailing down the punt return duties.

“We worked our punt return a little bit today,” Phillips said. “I like the guys we have up front but we hadn't really had a chance t see the skill guys we've got back there on returns but I'm excited about the confidence Demarco Robinson has back there catching them. That was a problem last year with him, losing confidence in himself and us losing confidence in him. You drop two and we're going to lose confidence in you because the object of it is to finish that play with the ball. We feel good about the core guys we have.”

***It was an offensive players interview day so I spent some time with Larry Warford and Matt Smith discussing what makes the defensive tackle duo of Mister Cobble and Donte Rumph so good. Look for a story on that down the road but the short version is they really believe those two guys are every bit as good as what they see from the SEC's top teams week in and week out. They've both matured a great deal, gotten themselves in shape (Warford joked about how terrible of shape Rumph was in when he got to UK) and are coming into their own.

***Smith also told me Max Godby is working as his primary backup at center right now, but freshman Zach Myers has started out his career at center and might be the future.

***As for depth chart movement, don't expect much until after a scrimmage or two.

“It's not fair. It's not fair to the guys that are lining up after four practices and none in full pads to set a depth chart,” Phillips said. “It's so hard to set a depth chart with how we're going to line up against Louisville because it's way too early.”

***TCP's Matt McCarty filled in admirably as a photographer today and should have a photo gallery from after practice later this evening.

  • Great report, Matt. Appreciate the detail.

As for the rugby punting issue, it sounds like Joker has (unfortunately) bought into the idea of using it from here on out. I personally don't see much benefit in using it when your punters can flip the field if you'll just let him. To me, the rugby style gets the ball there a lot faster and leaves too much to chance with respect to where the ball will bounce and end up. If it had truly changed the game of college football, you would see everyone doing it. To me, it is something you can do to mask punting deficiencies, not something you do with a punter who can blast it like Tydlacka and Foster.

  • Thanks again, Matt.

If Foster can get off a quick kick with good hang time then I like our chances of flipping the field this year. I like to hear this, "We have to get it out quick. Right now, (Foster) is the fastest we've ever had."

I felt the same way about directional kickoffs. If mansour can put it in the end zone every time, let him do it, regardless of the position. Maybe he had more issues than I know about, but it seemed like he had the leg to freate a touchback everytime last year if they would have let him.

I agree 100%. I LOATHE the idea of forcing our kicker to try and put the ball in the corner every time. We are already at a competitive disadvantage against most opponents. We don't need to help them out mire by giving them the ball on the 40, which happens far too often. I cringe every time I hear Joker admit that our scheme is such that we will get beat on returns if we kick the ball relatively straight.

Agree with this.I remember down at Ole Miss a couple of years ago when two of the damn directional kicks went out of bounds, giving Ole Miss the ball at the 40. banghead

  • Is UK going to rugby punt all the time? I have always seen the rugby kick as a way to run additional time off the clock or to mask coverage/kicking game problems. I dont think I have ever seen a team use it all the time. panic

  • Rugby punting is not a product of trying to hide a weak punter, it's usually due to a deficiency in the blocking. It allows the punter to sidestep the rusher and to get the ball off faster. Even though we may have a NFL caliber punter, we still have and have had depth issues at the offensive line.

If you need an example of what happens when we have poor blocking on a punt, please see any Florida game over the past 10 years. I think they have blocked like 30 of our punts!!!! headslap

I hate rugby style punting, but I can understand why the coaching staff will use it. Especially, this year with a freshman punter and possibly several freshman lineman on special teams.

The past five years for Sep 2 have average a high of 93.6, hopefully we're do a cooler day to help the average out.
Gone to the Pizza Pit twice and both times it was unbearable. Aslo their turf field absorbs and blasts out the heat like a furnace.

The John sucks. It has no redeeming qualities.

And it doesn't help that when the game is at UofL and played on a Sunday opening weekend, they line it up for a kickoff at 3:30 or so (i.e., the hottest part of the day).

  • I hate when this game is played on Sunday instead of ppening Saturday. I HATE it.

Just out of curiosity, why is that? I wouldn't think it would matter when it's Labor Day weekend?

  • Sounds like Joker learned something last year and is measuring his responses much better than he did before. I am glad about that. And from what he is saying so far I am a bit more optimistic because he seems quietly confident, unlike last year. Of course last season did turn out to be a rather humbling experience given the potential that was there that did not come to fruition.

Personally, i don't like it because i have a vacation scheduled, and come back on that sunday, where as i could watch it on saturday at an establishment. Sunday i will be on a plane completely away from it. Just my situation though.

Yep. I hate waiting. And the atmosphere is not as big on a Sunday.

Mostly for selfish reasons. For me, college football Saturdays are like a national holiday each and every week. I get up earlier than usual, have ESPN Gameday blasting in the living room (the wife and kids love that)....especially when the opening sequence song cranks up for the first time that season. Then friends either come to our house or we're at their house by around 11:00 with a cooler of beer, food on the grill, etc.

This is a weekly ritual for me and my buddies down here, and it is taken to extreme levels on opening Saturday...usually meaning at least a case in the cooler for each of us and then a return trip to the store by the 4:00 games to buy more beer b/c we've already nearly gone through all of our beer by then and need more for the night games. I like for "my game" to be a part of that, not the following day when everyone is hungover as hell and I struggle to get anyone to watch it with me. Sometimes I like to watch games by myself or just with the wife, but I really enjoy watching a ton of games with my buddies. We watch each other's games and pull for each other's teams, unless we have money riding on the opponent. Its just an event, and I don't like for my game to be an afterthought the following day where I'm just sitting there in pain.
