Fair Question, does Joker deserve another year cause of youth?

  • I agree. The coach in waiting hasn't worked out. Recruiting is also part of job. We can't use this excuse every year. Our team is playing with the same type of enthusiasm as our coach coaches. I'm a season ticket holder as alot of you are and am very disappointed.I was hoping Joker would succeed. It is time to move on.

I mean that as the offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator. I should have been clear in my statement. Sorry.

I misunderstood. True on that account of OC and DC.

Injuries and attrition are part of D1 football. All schools face it. Are we young? Absolutely! Do these guys show flashes of ability, yes they do. The problem I have is back to the front office. Total lack of leadership!!! Joker has for years been who these players run to when yelled at by others. He from my viewpoint needs to make these upperclassmen toe the line or move on period. They have been slapped on the hand and made to sit in time out but not been really held accountable because he wants to be there friend. How about poor Morgan Newton. He could have been one of the best tight ends in recent years, but, was never moved to that position until recently(to a slot receiver). But those in charge allowed him to stay in a position he was ill equipped to play at this level.

But leadership does not end in the football office. To allow the AD and the UKAA to have a pass is not justified. It is time to make wholesale changes and move forward. Once again we find ourselves starting over due to the ineptness of leadership not only from the aforementioned but our Board of Trustees as well. If basketball is to be the status quo then dome over Commonwealth and create a 70,000 seat basketball facility, drop football and move on!

Good post. And Morgan Newton is not the only player that has been put in a position that does not fit their skill set and when it doesn't work out, it's the players fault and they are left high and dry.

He can't blame it on the youth. He's the one mostly responsible for them being so young. And besides, why aren't our upperclassmen(the ones we do have) good enough to beat out freshmen and sophomores?

Some of the upper classmen did beat out the young ones in spring ball and fall camp. After UofL game there was a knee jerk reaction that we were going to give "athletism and youth overr knowledge and upper classmen" a chance. Complete disregard for who won out in spring ball and camp. How well has it worked out? I think we all know the answer. IMO the "youth card" was the only card left to play. Desperate move IMO.

I've been a Joker supporter but can not do it anymore. Saturday showed me that Towles should have been #2 from the get go. He's the same type of QB as Smith while Jalen is not. (This is not a knock on Jalen) Why would you want to try to run two different types of offenses if you don't have to. I honestly believe if Towles would have been taking #2 snaps all along his chance of injury would have been greatly decreased. Sorry for the long answer but no Joker shouldn't get another year IMO.

This about says it all. Anyone worth their salt can see that having Morgan at the #2 spot was not going to work in this O. So why did our coaches insist on him being there? They put him and the team in a bad position, should something happen to Max. As for Jalen, is it fair to ask the whole team to run a different set of plays and change philosophy because your backup has a different skill set? I too have been in Jokers camp, but the way he has done things this yr has just been mind boggling at times. Our offense hasn't scored a 1st Q TD in almost 2 full seasons, we play from behind constantly, and we still want to run up the gut in the 4th Q when we are down 2 scores. I think we do have some very nice talent ready to grow up, but frankly, I have lost confidence that Joker can make the appropriate decisions regarding that talent to get us to a higher level. Jokers coach-in-waiting position was supposed to eliminate the growing pains of bringing in new coaches and all new philosophies, but has failed. And as much as I hate to say it, that is on him.

Spanky.....well said. If the Administration brings Coach Phillips back next year there will be bedlam in the Bluegrass State. I can see no scenario where Joker comes back. The broader issue is....will they hit a home run (like the Cal hire)? If in fact the money is there.....we need to demand a huge hire!

A single coach can't recruit "every" player. The fact of the matter is that Joker was responsible with most of our high profile recruits the last few eyars. The problem is that he didn't have as much time to recruit because he was the coordinator. Couple that with the fact that over half of our staff under brooks spent little to no time on the recruiting trail and you have the mess we see in our top two classes right now.

All that to say, we have the talent on the roster to beat western.

Joker dug his own grave by falling short against Ole miss, Miss. State and Tennessee his first year.

If we had won 2/3 of those games we likely play in a new years day bowl game. If we had done that we are all talking about how much great young talent we have right now and how we are lookign good for next year.

Instead, we flopped in those 3 games and Joker's first year was a massive disapointment.

I had hoped joker could stick around because this IS his dream job. But the bottom line is that it just isn't working out. When he gets to 8 losses Barnhart should do the deed.

You make some really good points, but we disagree on one of them.

Had Joker won 2 or 3 of those games you mention in his first year, I don't see it making any difference in where the program is now. The program is what it is and where it is now because you have an inexperienced head coach who is guilty of much mismanagement on many levels.

In essence, Mitch put a little lamb in an arena of a bunch of wolves. Joker's success in this conference would have been a long, long shot.

Had he won those two extra games in his first year, he would be protected now. Sadly, the sooner Mitch closes this chapter in UK football, the quicker the program has a CHANCE to make progress.

That's false. The only real "move" that was made after the UofL game was the move from end/lb to wlb for Dupree. Anybody with two eyes who watched braus and mcduffen at wlb know that they didn't belong on the field.

In the d-backfield we have young guys playing because of injuries. I agree, joker has a lot of work to do to keep his job, but there is no point in making stuff up.
