  • Dont sweat Thomas. If he doesnt end up at UK then that would be very very shocking. This is recruiting and nothing is a sure thing but Thomas should be at UK.

JMO, but THIS is how you build Kentucky Football. Realisitically, Kentucky should spend a vast majority of their recruiting efforts in 2 states- Florida and Georgia. If you could build a staff that had major ties to just those two states, you would have a lot more success building UK than focusing on a lot of these other places.

Fact is........GOOD football players in Florida will come to Kentucky if you put in the work to get them here. It's not that hard.

This is the blueprint. It's not putting 3 guys in Ohio chasing the white whales.

And yes, Fricken KUDOS to the staff on this one. Along with Bell, UK has garnered commits from two defenders with the best looking offer sheets that they've gotten in years. Great work, specifically Nord.

UK should just keep Nord, Summers, and Cassity in Florida until Fall Camp.

Minter - Great points. I would add Southern Ohio to FL and GA. It will take time to build relationships, but there is no reason we shouldn't live in that area and pull out 5 or 6 kids per year from Southern OH.

  • Fantastic recruiting get

And outstanding comments on recruiting strategery from you folks. Agree 100%, it is apparent recruiting efforts in Ohio are wasted time/money that ought to be spent down south. And gimme a break with the idea of us recruiting Texas - hello, did the Mumme years not register? Despite Tejas A&M's entrance, I doubt kids down there are going to show much interest in travelling far north away from home to play their football at distant locations from their friends & family.

    Kentucky
    Tennessee
    Georgia
    Florida
maybe some S. Carolina sprinkled in

That's it, that's the list of the places these coaches should be 24/7

Of course there is a reason - those kids have been raised from birth on Big 10 football, along with a yankee superiority complex to look down on SEC football as uncouth southern racist hicks. They'd rather play for a mediocre Big East Cincy program than Kentucky.

    JHB4UK

  • Minter is the same guy who bashed our staff for not recruiting cincy for the last 5 or 6 years.

The I-75 corridor is where it's at. I think Joker's finally got the staff in place to hit Ohio, GA and FL.

Already throwing in the towel on Ohio is plain dumb. The same people saying we should already give up on Ohio are the one's who bashed the staff for not recruiting Ohio in the previous few years. The same people saying we should give up are the same people who said it may take a while to build relationships up there.

Some of you are pure Schizophrenic.

Kids want to play with the best. If we put THE TIME in up in Ohio it will yield results. We just can't give up on an area an hour and a half away after 5/6 months of really spending time there.

Common sense, bro. Not sure how anyone would think otherwise. I NEVER understood why Rich Brooks essentially ignored Florida by only having Jimmy Heggins and Petri as the only guys recruiting Florida. Then they temporarily sent a guy down there for a while that didn't know a soul in the entire state, Chuck Smith. LoL

Petri and Heggins didn't recruit their last 3 years on the staff either. They were miserable on the recruiting trail. Ronny Sneed was about the only guy Heggins ever got and that's only because he was from Talahassee and that's where Coach Heggins spent his time when he wasn't in Lexington. His family lived in Talahassee.

With the addition of TAMU to the SEC I think we need to focus on FL, GA, and TX primarily. Take the top 5 kids from KY and a few from the surrounding states but FL, GA, and TX should be our hotbeds

We haven't been getting the top 5 in KY. That's somewhat troubling. Have to keep our state's best in state and away from Louisville. This year's class is starting to look promising though.

    UKCAT17

  • We've been pretty good before this year. It all has to do with how we perform on the field. If we can show some progress this year, then we will be just fine in-state.

I agree. This is the first year we have put major time and resources in Southern Ohio. We have to build relationships in Southern Ohio over a period of a few years. Cassity got a quality CB from Southern Ohio last year. We need to grab 2-3 kids from Southern Ohio this year and then build that to 5-6 every year. If we could average the following it would be great:

    Kentucky 4
    S. Ohio 5
    GA 6
    FL 6
    Misc 4

  • Even when things are going great some just have to bash or start with the name calling, it's become comical...

Nord and Turner both seem to be doing well on the trail. I agree 100% with you Minter I would like to see us spending more time in FLA. I lived in Daytona for a while and was blown away the first time I went to a game... The state of FLA has great football players at all positions but what stands out to me is the number of playmakers. I don't think we should drop OH completely but since we don't have the largest recruiting budget I to would like to see us spending alittle more of our time and money down south. Miss is loaded with good HS football as well, to bad we don't have many strong pipelines down there. GO CATS!!!

It costs virtually nothing to recruit Ohio. Gas...

  • Cincy should be recruited as if it were a part of Kentucky. That said, I don't think UK will ever be very successful in recruiting Cincy until they get someone on staff that's "dialed in" to the Cincy recruiting scene (e.g., Mo Douglass). I really wanted Kerry Coombs, but Urban (wisely) snatched him up at tOSU.

It costs "time". Time that could be spent on kids in Florida who truly want to play in the sec and don't view it as simply a fall back option (which Ohio kids do).

I have got to disagree with you JHB about Ohio being a waste of time. Maybe southern Ohio has not been very productive, but I think northern Ohio is where we should be recruiting. Southern Ohio is close to KY and they probably do tend to look down on UK, but northern Ohio is mostly unaware of KY and that is where the best players in OH reside. When I lived in Ohio northern OH looked down on southern OH football players, especially Cinci...they would have glady given the entire city of Cinci to KY..kit and kaboodle. If we are going to be successful in northern Ohio the first thing to do is a marketing program so they know we exist.

Minter - We have to develop the relationships in Southern Ohio. It will take time, but has to happen. Again, we really have only put any effort there this year. Too close to ignore.

  • This is just my opinion and doesnt mean much but I do really like this conversation so here goes. I think we should recruit some in Ohio especially southern Ohio but the problem is and will always be as long as Ohio State is a national power a young man will probably go there if offered no matter how much they like UK. Similar to a basketball player in Kentucky would probably choose UK at the last min if offered. Kids up there even in southern Ohio have been brought up with big-10 on the brain and some UC thrown in. Everyone will not agree but it just seems alot harder to get a kid out of Ohio these days than Fl. or Ga.

Indeed. I have also read that Ryan Timmons has Kentucky and Arkansas as his two favorites and will decide before the season begins. I think in the end, the home state school will win out in that.

But you said 6 months ago that it was a huge mistake that we weren't in Cincy and southern Ohio.

In terms of your premise... Ohio produces the 4th most division 1 prospects
In the country. A big part of their population borders ky. Those guys obviously will go to nd or Ohio state over uk right now. But a lot of them go to Pitt, or Cincy, or purdue that would be big upgrades over some
Of the guys we brought in under brooks.
